This thread makes me homesick! I grew up in Southwest on Rathbone. Got my first job when I was 16 at Vince's right there on Homer and Springwells. I was there when they changed Wilson middle to Phoenix Academy, lol they thought a new name could change that school's reputation I think not. I miss looking for my picture and my friends pictures in that lawndale liquor store thats run by a guy named ahmed and his wife, they had the best italian subs ever! Is it even still there? lol I need a trip home to see my friends and family that still live there.

Yes, thank you for doing this:) Big shout out to Raev, AmieLamie, Deadcat, all y'all repin' Southwest.

Oh, I cannot get that neighborhood talk out of me so, let me translate: LOL

I would like to say hello and honor and recognize everyone on the board from Southwest Detroit, that would include, but is not limited to: Raev, AmieLamie, Deadcat, and just everyone who appreciates Southwest Detroit.

I would like to say that Family Treat has the most awesome food, but nobody can touch Telway coffee!!!!!!! And also, Telway is the best spot for a stop after CC to get some of the best greasy food around.

I would also like to mention Planet Rock right over on Springwells, for all your latin freestyle needs.

I would also like to post some Latin Freestyle music in honor of the neighborhood, may everyone just slightly go a little emo for a few minutes:

I miss Taco Tuesday! J&J coney Island had the best coney dogs though and the hottest cook I think his name was Larry I remember going there sitting at the counter with my grandma and just drooling over him. I went to Higgins/Wilson/ my high schools were Southwestern for my freshman year and then I got kicked out at the end of freshman year and my mom enrolled me in a charter school in Romulus named Summit.

My ex husband is from SW D. His mother lives there too.

I remember hanging out there when we were dating, and then when we were married, we would spend time at his mother's house (we got along, she is a cool lady). It was one of the very few things that was good about our marriage. The people in the neighborhood were always at his mother's house, and they were (and I'm sure still are) lively and friendly people. A few of them were musicians, so they were always playing music and singing. We would sometimes go to El Rancho restaurant (they have the best food).

The only thing that sucked was my car getting stolen down there, and my ex-mother in law's neighbor would always complain about "those damn Mexicans." When she would start her crap, I would ask her why she moved there. She never had an answer :)

Yup, Supreme Bakery was where we always got our birthday cakes from, well their and Cousin's on Springwell's. Actually, my daughter's 1st birthday cake came from Supreme at that time I was living on Florida street off of McGraw, my very first place by myself.

How about Patton Park? Anyone remember going there and if so do they remember all the stories about "the swamp"? LOL

I used to go there for Girl Scouts and to swim in the pool. I remember one story about a guy with a hook that would kidnap you, take you to the swamp and eat your kidneys if you werent in the house before dark. There was another story I heard about noxious gas being in the middle of the swamp and if you actually made it to the middle of the swamp just one whiff of the gas would turn your eyeballs to mush and turn your body inside out. Once they closed the whole park for three days because a girl was raped and killed there in the swamp. I heard a lot of goofy stories about it I cant believe they turned it into a old folks home now.

They put a Retirement Home up on Vernor, "Pablo Davis" I believe is the name of it, but the Park is still there, and the swampy area, the little rec center actually has a little gym inside of it now. I think they took down the park equipment but I think they have since replaced it. I know that a lot of soccer games are held over on the Dix side of the Park.

What messes me up is how they put the retirement home across the street from Woodmere Cemetery. It's like "and your next stop is just across the street".

How about Patton Park?

I learned how to swim AND how to fight at Patton Park! I actually drove past it not that long ago with *Siren* while showing her the old 'hood.

Any of you guys remember the story about the deaf guy who got shot at Patton Park in a terrible case of mistaken identity?

I actually want to give a mention here to the agency I used to work for, Southwest Counseling Solutions (any of you that grew up in Southwest and are about my age would remember it as Southwest Community Mental Health) The agency main office is on Waterman. They have so many programs that help people in Southwest, I am actually gonna post a video that I was in and it highlights some of the work they do, The first story is the person I worked with to help get her and her kids off the streets, she will tell her story and this is public material so a release of information was signed by her and all families that are in the video so nobody's rights are violated:

Duly Dogs, Book Bin (where I used to get my comics) on Vernor and Springwells, coconut ice cream from the Mexican street vendors, cars with the heavy bass speakers on late summer nights (lol), Sunday barbacoa...

Grew up in the Mexicantown area and then around the Junction area. Glad to see renovations, new homes, and new businesses in the old neighborhood.

Kat, I commend you for working with individuals like that woman. It always breaks my heart to see so many homeless families on the streets who have no way out. This is an immense problem I've seen here in Colorado since I moved here. Are you still involved with that line of work?

When I was a kid we moved around alot in southwest, I remember living on Florida 2 blocks north of McGraw, then Lumley across from a tiny park, and then on the corner of Springwells and something 2 or 3 blocks south of Michigan Avenue. Unfortanatly I moved to Warrendale (Warren Ave, between Southfield and Evergreen) in 5th grade so I don't really remember much as far as the neighborhoods go. Sometimes I wish we had never moved from there, I remember those days much more fondly then I do my middle school and high school years. Probably just because of how young I was though. I sometimes wonder where my friends from then are now.

I remember a place I used to love eating at. Las Bristas its on Vernor across the street from Arandas tire. I would go in there on Wednesday nights and listen to the marachis play and have a margarita and chicken mexican sanwich. I could only eat a quarter of it because it was so big I'd take the rest home and have it for days later, I miss that place.

Yum, I love ze mexican sandwich I just wish they put avocado's on it. LOL, now I am hungry and craving Mexican food. Los Galano's is awesome too, but one of the newer ones you have to check out is Mi Pueblo. That one is on Dix, by the gas station, it's not a convenient location but the food is to die for.

Maybe some of us should start an north east suburbs appreciation thread.

Jealous much? =P still wont have nothing on the D lol.

On a serious note I have to mention American Indian Health and Family Services on Lonyo and Michigan. I used to go there on Mondays, wednesdays and fridays when I was a kid I learned a lot from the elders there and it helped keep me outta trouble. Gotta thank them for helping me get my anger under control and for graduating High School. They are having thier annual Winter Solstice Gathering on the 21st and everyone is welcome you just gotta bring yourself and a dish to pass. I'm trying to get my butt down there for this.
