The Ambassador Bridge Controversy

Recommended Posts

I have been reading about the controversy surrounding construction of a new bridge and billionaire Manuel Moroun of Grosse Point has been trying to derail efforts of the DRIC to construct a new bridge.

Mr. Moroun claims a new bridge (not owned by him) would take away business (i.e. profits) from his bridge.

But isn't competition the capitalist way of doing things here in America? Wouldn't it be just another monopoly to allow one person to own/control the bridges that would connect Windsor and Detroit?

Besides, how can Moroun say for sure that it would hurt his profits? I believe this is just another wealthy individual that only has himself in his actions to derail DRIC. I say let capitalism run free. What's there to fear Mr. Moroun?

Capitalism is all about competition, isn't it?

Your thoughts please............

Yeah, he is completely in the wrong. I'm also for building another bridge due to the fact that with the current monopoly, this guy could legally 100% decide tomorrow that he's closing the bridge to Canada and we all have to just deal with it. Not cool.

Sucks to lose.

I agree, it's a situation that only he benefits from and on top of that he can close it down thus screwing everyone including our (fragile) economy.

I think we have so far been extremely fortunate that he hasn't done such a thing like shutting it down to hold as a bargain chip to get his way.

I support the DRIC's efforts to fight him.

There is need and demand for a new bridge but I am fiercely against Moroun owning another bridge.

As a truck driver, I can say for sure that they need a second bridge totally. One dedicated to commercial traffic only and one for the regular citizens. There is so much moving through that portal, that it clogs up the areas when people have to go through the process of crossing a border. Its an evil border right there.

A connection between two countries doesn't seem like something that should be left in the hands of one (greedy) individual. Certainly not two of them. The whole thing is yet another example of Matty's ridiculous behavior relative to all the property he owns in Detroit and what he does with them. (Largely nothing, causing much waste of very useful buildings and property. To what purpose, I have no idea)

Worse is he wanted to build the second one so he would own both but he wanted it right next to the origional. They passed his idea down because it would take little to knock down two bridges right next to each other.

Yup, so not only does he want to be the only game in town, he's incredibly fucking stupid on top of it. There are many reasons for putting a new bride away from the first, one is to hopefully protect us against terrorism and the second is to help the flow of traffic and commerce across the boarder.

I also feel that Windsor and Detroit should get a share of the tolls to help both cities during this down turn in our economy.

Just my opinion.
