Scar My Machine
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – White House Chief of Staff William Daley said on Sunday the Obama administration was considering tapping into the U.S. strategic oil reserve as a way to help ease soaring oil prices. Full story here. I was talking about this last week. Why are we not tapping into our oil reserve sooner? It has been obvious for far too long that we are being held hostage with soaring gas prices. We have more than enough and on top of our government pressuring auto makers into developing alternative fuels driven cars and electric cars, why have we been sitting on our own fuel supplies? Because.... basically the plan has always been to be the only country left with oil when the rest of the world runs out.... The U.S. is always looking for the upper hand in this kind of thing. Scar My Machine
While that may be true I caught a story on t.v. where in Los angeles, Ca. alone there are drilling sites bringing up oil for our reserves. The men working that site were saying that in their area alone we had enough oil to last American consumption for about 150 yrs. Now it makes no sense to force auto makers to make electric cars and alternative fuel cars to end up with what? Billions of gallons of unusable oil 100 yrs from now? I feel confident that 20 yrs or so from now there will be an alternative fuel and or electric cars will be replacing gas powered cars and we can be free of oil. candyman
Gas prices soar for much different reasons than how much oil we have. They soar because of panic. They soar because of predictions. And they soar because a while ago some people decided to make our shit "cleaner" which meant we had to use an "efficient" means of producing gasoline and cracking diesel which in turn led to our fuels and fuel economy being crappier than every other country...not to mention dirtier and more wasteful in the process. You imagine this glorious oil reserve somewhere...well, we have been using that as long as the government has owner vehicles that use it. We tapped into it a long time ago and I still don't see how its going to help anything at all...it will probably be like putting a napkin on a sucking chest wound. And as far as the alternative fuels go...well we have been taking more steps back than we have forward. The underachieving Prius turned into Jesus, the useless in a medium sized or large town Volt will become God, and we will be staring happily at our colons thinking that ethanol is good for the environment and all of that shit. You don't even need to look hard for the proof! If you hold the stats for ethanol and bio-diesel side by side it is crystal clear...same goes for the Prius next to anything with the electric wheels powered by a 1.0L diesel or gas generator...and the electric car doesn't even need a letdown seeing how its major selling point is them telling people its made from recycled bottles... Im not angry or yelling at anyone...but if people don't stop focusing on nothing but the fucking oil and hyper-advertised cars that mock the years of engineering put into vehicles then we are doomed to driving with 10 mile long extension cords and having ethanol stations built every 2 blocks...Oh and we will still be polluting just as much...YAY! candyman
Looking into getting a motorcycle this spring/summer... sick of dis gaz bullsheet. Choose carefully or make sure you know where to get gas with no ethanol in it...we just replaced another fuel system on another bike where the ethanol ate away at it... But still...buy a bike...a Harley!
Msterbeau
It would be better if they just smacked the CEO's of BP, Exxon, etc and told them to stop fabricating price increases to pad their already ridiculous profits.

creatureofthenyte
Of course our fearless "leader" could just lift the moratorium on oil drilling in America, and then the oil companies could drill here, and the gas prices would drop like a rock, and our economy would take off like a rocket. Obama will never do it though, because that would mean the "horrible" oil companies that drive our economy, would be able to provide more Jobs for American workers...and who would want That ???? After seeing what BP's arrogance and stupidity did in the gulf and Exxon's in Alaska, do you really want these people drilling all over the place? Say goodbye to nice clean beaches and unspoiled forests.

Because Obama is on a crusade to eliminate all fossil fuels overnight to get rid of the Global Warming that science hasn't even proven beyond a reasonable doubt yet. That's why. Even if it were true, and global warming were real, I still think he's been doing it wrong. I have a feeling (and I didn't read the article yet, will have time later) that someone nudged him and said "okay, this bullshit has gone on long enough". Whoever that was needs to be our next President, because this current President is a bigger jackoff than Kwame Kilpatrick humping Granholm . candyman
We could either drill all over the place and ruin our beaches and forests...or we could just clog up those same places with giant wind turbines and/or solar panels...the only way to make the beach or forest more awesome than nature intended is to add jet turbine noises, constant flickering shadows, the risk of destructive debris flying everywhere, and reflective solar panels feeding the high tension lines that make the peaceful buzzing noises... If we want power we are going to lose either way...the solutions turn out to be just as bad as the problem...
torn asunder
the actual oil supply (or refinery capacity, for that matter) has little to do with the day to day volatility of gas prices - it's more driven by investor speculation/panic based on world events, and seasonal consumption. the only reason tapping our reserves might work (and it might) is that it may calm investors' nerves & give them some confidence. victoriavengeance (1)
Agree. Thirded. my beautiful, lovely, little hybrid s10 truck is doing great on this 3.70 a gallon going on by me. /sarcasm.
Vater Araignee
I'm just waiting for the fall. Got enough dry goods in storage to feed a family of 4 3k calories a day, plots of land picked out that will need minimal protection and a life time of skill. I hope they spew out the reserves so that the fall will happen fasted and I can watch all the idiots starve. I'll be nice and turn 'em into jerky and sell them to the other idiots for heirloom seeds and ammo.
