pomba gira
You have heard "everything they did"??? that is impressive. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So OK, "everything I've heard by them is annoying". But if I heard something ov theirs I did like, that would annoy me too. Christ on a crutch- & I thought I was pedantic! :blink

Fierce Critter
Growing up with 4 siblings born in the 50's, I was exposed to a lot of Beach Boys, along with other music of the era. I like the singles a lot. Actually got very into downloading them a couple years ago, and found myself really appreciating their sounds, particularly the harmonies, more than ever, with a much more mature ear. Then again, I tend to be drawn to music via melody/vocals, and both are very strong in their music. I have heard year after year about the genious of "Pet Sounds". I read Brian Wilson's biography a couple years ago. I saw some documentaries on him and the band. I've paid attention to his recovery & the rivival of his career. When Brian Wilson heard Phil Spector's work with the Ronettes and other of his "wall of sound" groups, Brian went ballistic and lost his mind over the music (no, I'm not saying that's what drove him mad - just that that's about how he described what that sound did to him). Hearing that sound, as well as his deepening involvement in drugs, topped off by a horrendous relationship with his mind-fucking father, all came together to create the "genius" that is "Pet Sounds". That said, I listened to all of "PS" for the first time a couple years ago. And basically - hated it. I just can't STAND the Phil Spector style, and Brian definitely did what he could to capture it. I like some of the songs on it, actually just the singles ("God Only Knows", etc.) but overall, I personally don't "hear" what's so gloriously awe-inspiring about it. But then again, I can't stand Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, or Janis Joplin either - but I can appreciate why they're considered geniuses and worthy of worship. They just don't appeal to MY ear. Doesn't mean they're not all they're cracked up to be. So, yes. I like the Beach Boys. Now, more than ever. But pretty much just the singles, and most especially their ballads & "Good Vibrations". the eternal
I've heard quite a bit of their work. My family is in love with "Pet Sounds," but I just can't get into it for some reason. I'll admit that I can apprecaite their creativity and innovativeness, but I just personally don't like them. Enough said. I feel the same way. I know Pet Sounds and Smile are these great legendary albums, the lyrics are quite good, but I just can't dig their sound. I really tried. I'm a bit of a music/movie snob and follow critics more than your avg fan. I go on metacritic, which is this site that compiles every review from every critic. If you get over a 70 comp. score, you must have put out a VERY well received album. It got like 100. Smile is literally the best reviewed album in the past 10 years. I just cant get into it. Oh, and Rubber Soul, - the Beatles first true departure from boy band-dom, and quite a great album I might add,- influenced Pet Sounds first THEN Pet Sounds influenced Sgt Peppers. I'm a big fan BTW of late 60s drug-induced Beatles albums (Abbey Road-love it love it ) but for some reason that Beach Boys sound (although much better in the Pet Sounds/Smile era) still eludes me. Edited to get over it.-sorry GOC

unchaste
I'll probably still be making him dinner when he's 64, but if he lives until I'm 64, he's making his own damn food.
