My mom is catholic so every year for Lent she gives up chocolate. even though i'm not catholic i do this also as moral support. going through emotional problems this year which is making it alot harder. everyone always yelling or griping, kids fighting over video games, not being able to get a job, and my poor self can't deal. chocolate calms me. this really sucks.

So eat doughnuts? Isn't that what people do now to get through lent supposedly pure, just swap an superficial addiction for another?

I'm sorry if I seem callous but I have never heard of someone actually sacrificing something for Lent.

It is always something petty or simple.

Hell I'm not even Cristian let alone Catholic, but for my grandmother I gave up drinking for lent. I thought I would go nuts but I did it and now I might drink the equivalent of a case of beer a year. Yet I'm not impressed with myself.

Considering lent is basically marked by penance, it would have more meaning if someone gave up things like:

toilet paper and used a washcloth instead.

gasoline.

everything with processed sugar in it. (in today's society this will cause a major sacrifice because of unprocessed food)

watching anything on a screen.

any shopping that isn't exclusively about need.

Convenience, Convenience, Convenience.

Convenience.

Fasting without fasting isn't fasting.

Penance isn't penance without penance.

well mom did try to give up Pepsi one time but that didn't work too well. It's more the fact that i am the only one in the family willing to even try anymore. my father never made an attempt to be supportive and my sisters have both givin up even trying to supportive. i am tired of trying to explain to everyone why it is so important to my mom and to me. i don't move on to other vises i just suffer through it for the most part. normally i just work harder at the whole spring cleaning thing, but i recently injured my back which makes it harder for me to do anything. i look at it almost as a diet.

Lent under VaticanII, is a fucking JOKE (I am a regular attender of the Catholic Mass, & several others to)..."two light meals & 1 real meal a day"..."whatever you gave up, you can have it on Sunday"....WE, don't do it like that..but many do...I went Kosher for lent, & considering, I only eat beef in the fall, this is a great sacrifice.

...Lent, isn't as much about penance, as it is about feeling a oneness with the Christ...if the adherent IS a real adherent, one needs not repent, for one should do nothing wrong (ie. hurt another, according to those Ten Commandments)...

Just a question. Why does she need to be supported? What I mean is can she only get through giving up something for Lent if everyone else around her give it up too? I can understand not eating chocolate around her as a way to show support, but I don't understand why everyone else has to practice Lent just because she is. You should practice Lent because of your own personal believe to do so. Not just because someone else is going it.

My family is very close and we try to support eachother through eveything sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It's not that we have to. It is more of a show of willpower and the willingness to attempt to give up something we enjoy as a way to bring us closer to eachother and to god. As to giving up things that are nonessentials we have already done that with a few exceptions. We don't buy paper towels, fast food, cookies, chips, or stuff like that. usually mom gets a big bag of hershey kisses a month for the house, the occasional snacks for the kids, and a six pack of beer a week. as for buying less gas i wish we could. people do have to work moia mutka has to work 5-6days a week. she works on the other side of town. my dad is getting a job even farther away, but will be carpooling with my brother. Please try to understand that i don't do it cause i have to i do it cause i love my mom and while i don't enjoy the 40 day chocolate diet it is an excuse of us to spend more time talking and understanding eachother. she is happy with her religion and while i'm not catholic i will do everything in my power to keep my mom happy.

Lent is about emulating the 40 day desert journey of a Man named Jesus... Though us giving up trivial amenities can not compare to what he was said to have gone through.

I think the Bible is not any more or less valid than most other history books... So to Me, Jesus is kinda like a hero from back in the day.

It should only be followed if you really believe Jesus was really that cool :p
