Ensanguine
I'm trying to decide on a song to do a cover of for an EP I'm working on with a new project. Influences for the project, to give you an idea of the sound I'm going for are the Mission, Type o negative, and John Carpenter (yeah I'm trying to use some of his awesome 80s type sounds but I'll probably end up failing miserably >.<) but it will probably just end up sounding like well... me. People I've showed it to so far have described it as "groovy darkness" lol and "funeral rock". Right now I'm considering The Ramones Pet Sematary, Joy Division New Dawn Fades or maybe Ceremony (not sure I should try to even improve upon that son)... Originally had planned a really interesting version of Little 15 by Depeche Mode, with the second half sung by a female and the perspective of the lyrics changed to 1st, but I don't think things are going to work out getting my friend to do it and not to mention it would mean I wouldn't get to play it live. I need suggestions. Also, what do you think would really get a crowd moving/interested if played live?
Simon Bar Sinister
New Order's "perfect kiss", maybe?
DJ Saint
New Order's "perfect kiss", maybe? NOOOOOOOooooo! The songs perfect already AND stands the test of time, not needing an update nor another useless cover that will always pale in comparison to the original. Somebody should do Icicle Works "Birds Fly" (Whisper to a Scream) and punch up the drums something fierce. Or When in Rome "The Promise" and tackle that amazing bassline. Or Golden Earrings "Twilight Zone", T’Pau: “Heart And Soul”, etc... Something slightly recognizable from the 80's but not overdone... Make it unique. And please no more covers of Dead or Alive: “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) . Good luck with the cover song!

Destroit
Cover Joy Division and DIE! Why not just make your own music... I see your Joy Division, and raise you one Skinny Puppy. Agreed BIG TIME Although Revolution State recently covered "Human Disease" (S.K.U.M.M.) and i think they did a rather clever job with it. listen at the link >>

Ensanguine
Cover Joy Division and DIE! Why not just make your own music... I'm definitely making my own... I'm thinking 3 + 1 cover for the ep. Just for fun mostly, that and sometimes I genuinely like the covered versions better. At least I feel that in the case of most Joy Division, while ground breaking, was hindered by audio shortcomings... It's evident from their live recordings that many of their album versions ended up not achieving the same effect they were going for live, weren't as heavy for example, yet only those lucky enough to see them ever got to experience that sound they were really going for. Not a big fan of Skinny Puppy besides that, or much other electronic stuff really. I think covers are a good starting point for many groups. I've been to shows before where I had never heard of the musicians so I didn't know what to listen for in their music. After going home I may listen to their albums and realize they are amazing but just didn't know the songs to follow them at the show. Sometimes a cover can help to give you an idea of what a band is doing sonicly when you don't know them yet. It's kind of like making a familiar dish for someone to entice them to try some of your more experimental cooking. NOOOOOOOooooo! I like your suggestions and agree with what you say, great songs but not too recognizable. The Promise could sound really good with a baritone voice like mine but it looks like it's been done a few times, not sure it needs to be done again.
