I am currently working on my bachelors in anthropology/archeology and I hope to get into the IPCAA at U of M to work on my PhD and post grad studies of the classical world. Well get this, I have to know 4 languages. Greek, Latin, German, and French. I would like to get a jump on this but do not want to spend the stupid amounts of money on Rosetta stone. Does anyone here know of any good alternative language studies software?

I am not even quite confident that Rosetta Stone, even if you did buy it, would be that helpful re: Greek and Latin, since you would want to know (probably) ancient Greek (relevant to Classical studies), and their Latin program apparently has the same immersion/conversational approach as their other products when, really, you will need to read and write in it much more than speak it.

My advice is to contact the Classical Dept. of a university and seek their advice.

And after all that, no, I don't know shit about on-line software.

Rosetta Stone will actually help but you have to remember that it deals mostly with the conversational or business version of the language...not dialect if that is what you want. My friend knows 5 languages because he was in training to become a pastor...but religion aside he used Rosetta Stone in combination with other, cheaper programs that focused on a more specific aspect of that language as in classical, northern dialect, or whatever he needed. I am getting Rosetta Stone soon after my mission because the Army thinks that while I am a good mechanic I would make a better intelligence person or a psyops interrogator...so I get Rosetta Stone for free, it is expensive, but the big part of it is that people know it works so they use it alot. If you can afford it the get it.

I think I found a list of some resources that might actually be useful in learning ancient Greek. Try here. If it isn't actually useful, accept my advance apology and know I didn't really put much effort in it but entered the first not totally garbage link that came up in a web search. Sorry.
