Chicago Public schools is now enforcing that a child can only eat lunch from the cafeteria at their school, and that parents are no longer able to pack a lunch for their kids. Some people think it's great because many of these children's home-packed lunches consist of nothing but pop and chips and by making it mandatory that kids eat the school's food, they might actually have a fighting chance to get good food and learn better nutritional habits (we all know America NEEDS better eating habits :no). On the other hand, many parents complain that not only do they pack a lunch that is better for their kid than the lunchroom food, but they believe the district is enforcing this as a way of control and to have a financial monopoly in regards to the lunch program (kids will be forced to pay a certain amount per day, or if you are low income, you must pay $2.25 minimum).

Thoughts?

This just a Chicago Mafia tactic.

Have you looked at the lunchroom meals that are being offered?

Bosco Stix and corn

Cheese nachos and refried beans

Pancakes, hash browns and sausage patty

Vegetarian chilly cheese fries and small soft pretzel

Pure over processed junk.

After looking at their menus you cant help but notice that they are nearly all carbohydrates and any dietitian that doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground still knows that is not healthy.

One other thing, in Chicago this is only policy and technically they can not enforce it but they will lie to the parents and tell them it is the law. Eventually if the zombies don't make a big stink then it will become law and start spreading around the country.

Q: How can you guarantee a politician corrupt?

A: They come from Chicago.

Chicago can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground. They tell other states to stop polluting the lake when all they need to do is look at their city and TRY to clean that shit. It is dirty both in the physical sense and politically...they don't actually dye the river green for St. Patty...it already is!

I pack my kids a lunch because I don't want them eating the crap that is served in the cafeteria at school. I'm usually in favor of new laws but I'd be pissed if someone said my kids would have to eat what was being served instead of what I gave them. If healthier eating is what they're going for they could just ban a few things (even that is wrong, but better) such as pop or candy from being sent for lunch. It's all about the $$$.

Agree with Slogo. This shit is going too far. I know that obesity is somewhat of an epidemic in this country but forcing someone to pay for a school lunch that is probably loaded with sodium and over-processed is not the solution. At any rate, how are they going to guarantee that the lunch they are providing is going to "healthier" and most of all natural?

I'll agree that obesity has increased in this country but it is nowhere near being an epidemic.

If you look at the charts you will see a dramatic increase in obisity in the 90's.

What those charts do not tell you is that the standards where changed by lowering what was considered over weight and disproportionately lowering "obesity" all in the name of Clinton forcing people out of the military.

I'm 6'1" 185lbs and considered over weight, if I gain 15lbs even if it is muscle I'll be considered obese. If I put 1" more of fat on my stomach I'll be considered obese.

Here is the problem, even with my slightly larger gut (ok ok 3" larger than it should be) I still have a body fat percentage of 5%. That is the low end of gymnasts and body builders. I can't be exactly sure of what the percentage will be if 1" is put on but you can be sure that it wont even be close 9% and that is what your averagely healthy adult male my age is suppose to have.

All of that and the unhealthy lunches they are serving aside. What happens if a rampant vegan gets in charge of a lunch program? You have a sudden down slide in grades, that's what happens. I'm not even considering the fact that most vegans I know don't actually know how to eat that type of diet healthily and look like they are on their way to being concentration camp victims. I'm talking the simple fact that a hungry kids cant concentrate, and oh yes most of the kids will be hungry because they will refuse to eat.

Want the kids to eat better? Get rid of the vending machines.

Yeah the standards for obesity have changed alot...I am amazed at how many people are on the special PT because they are "overweight" yet they are nothing but muscle...and that doesn't mean they are rippling with muscles.

And get kids moving...shit I was running all over the place as a kid and now that isn't really happening and I don't even see the roving gangs of kids on bikes which was giving them a workout without their knowledge. They can eat all the crap they want but if they don't move them it WILL hurt them. Even recess is shitty now and playground equipment is not filled with fun physical obstacles...they have removed most of the fun games due to the fact that children might get hit with a rubber ball.

The school system my kids go to doesn't allow dodge ball. I have also found it is now the national norm.

you really believe that? i'm surprised...

I still have a body fat percentage of 5%.

having never met you, i have no idea how you're built, but i have a *very* hard time believing this. body builders who are cutting for a contest get down to that range, and pretty much around 5% BF & lower you're going to start hitting health problems. how was you BF% measured? calipers, tape measures, etc. are invariably inaccurate, which is why i ask.

linky for pics!!

Why the surprise? I'll never be convinced that a person who is perfectly healthy carrying a few more pounds than what a shallow person thinks they should have is over weight. In the same mode, a person who is at risk because of their weight is not necessarily obese buy how we visualize the term. Now if you want to get technical then anyone carrying more weight in fat than needed is obese but it still isn't epidemic by definition.

Calipers, tape and an insurance doc who is an insurance doc and there is no talking sense into those brainwashed Nazis.

I do have health problems from having a lack of fat according to my real doctor.

I spend a lot of time with a cold, I chronically get bronchitis or pneumonia, my ribs crack a little to easily (one time i crack them just having a bad coughing fit) I have to drink more than the norm to stay hydrated.

Oh yeah, she thinks my depression may be linked to it. I guess fat people are jollier.

My she wants me to get up to 10% and has me on what she calls a redistribution program. I'm actually suppose to eat chicken skin, beef and pork fat and a lot of other things I never thought I would hear a doctor recommend. I also get yelled at about the wrong kinds of exorcise because she doesn't want me to develop (inter or intra, I cant remember) inter-muscular fat and she thinks I should back off the hiking and focus on abdominal exorcise.

She also says I should stop smoking if for no other reason than I may put on weight.

All school politics.

They already want to take away recess. And now force kids to only eat school lunch? Ummm, yeah great idea. *rolls eyes*

My school, for school lunch most of the time was barely recognizable as food at all and what was sure as hell was not healthy. This idea sucks and is fueled by money and percentages. Schools are set up like competitions now, best of this, best of that, worst this, worst that, change this, change that, yet nothing get's done correctly. I hope what I have seen from my own school district is not a reflection of the majority.

I went to several schools were the food was way more mystery than meat. it is the same were we live now. i'll be damned if some sadistic moron is going to keep me from sending a lunch that is actually recognizable as food to school with my son. i'll do it and dare them to say anything. there is no harm in a kid eating a pb&j on wheat, carrot sticks, and some V8 splash. so may the food nazis come and get me. i'll feed them a real meal then they can kiss my ass, eat sh*t, and die.

Im still more worried about the education provided at the schools than the meals. While having both in check would be nice it isn't going to help having a bunch of healthy kids that don't know jack about anything but preaching to you about what to eat and how to take care of the earth...because that is all I see coming out of the schools.

I think I nearly completely agree with you on something.

Yet another example of what happens when you put government in charge of education. Vater's right. This is "color of law" stuff. Tell people it's the law and they accept it without looking into it for themselves. Back a couple of years ago, the governor of Texas pulled this with telling people that Gardisil vaccines were required by law for girls and deaths resulted. The official telling the lie can then backpeddle and say that it was the parent's choice and that there was no law forcing them to do it.

  • 3 weeks later...

as i said before these stupid sadistic morons won't stop me from feeding my child the foods i want him to eat. My sisters agree with me wholeheartedly that if push came to shove here that we would not bend over for these high and mighty food nazis. i will beat the immortal hell out of some dumb jackass who will try to tell me what to feed my kid. Parents of America Unite against the oppression the food nazis are trying to enforce. it goes to say stand up for your right to raise your child as you see fit.
