TearSandrille
The Fox. I take more of a Native American approach, but I have my own spin on it spiritually.
Fierce Critter
I wouldn't say I use totems so much as they direct me. Same with my husband. My husband's is River Otter. Mine is Cougar. We probably are geared toward the NA philosophy more than anything else, though we kinda pave our own path. I'm convinced it was River Otter that brought my husband and I together. It's a long story, one that would only sound absurd explained to anyone who doesn't believe in such things. But I do believe it.
Shade Everdark
For the uninitiated, how does one go about finding it?
Fierce Critter
I don't know if you find it so much as it finds you. I think it helps to believe in them. If you want them in your spirituality, be open to them and they'll present themselves. Mine have come to me in dreams. Also, if you choose to follow a path that includes them as a basic belief (including some NA), some have standard ones you'd be born under, and you may choose to pursue. I just so happen to be born under Cougar, and it works for me overall. Jon, on the other hand, is born under Brown Bear, yet is incredibly obviously guided by River Otter. That doesn't mean he's not actually guided by Brown Bear. Just that River Otter is a lot more obviously at work in him. When's your birthdate? I'll see if I can find a chart online and tell you who your guide would be by medicine wheel calendar.
Fierce Critter
Here's a correspondence chart (Not necessarily applicable in all beliefs/trads): I find it telling that I was born under Cougar, and Jon was born under Brown Bear, and we're each other's compliment. Homicidalheathen
I have been going to plant spirit journeys to help me find my so called animal totems for years. I don't know that everyone has them though, I do have a Celtic Druid guide most pychics see around me. So far in the journey thing I have seen and experienced the magical 'essence' of turtles and spiders but I don't know that they are my totems. sithzanshen
The Hare came to me as a teenager. I denied it for a long time because I wanted soemthing more "masculine". Later, I began listening to it's medicine and found out how helpful the trickster is. A few years ago the Snow Owl swooped down and ate the Hare in a Vision. I was fire tending a Lodge for the fist time when it happened. Now, both advise me even though I follow an Eastern Path.

Particularly from people whose totem is Sturgeon or some similar unglamorous critter.

cptdeath
:fear do to my dealings with fate as a whole and the evil I feel my path exludes the influence of a single select critter. I've raised exotic animals since I was little and it seems to me the food chain is a heavyer influence. I have what would be considered familiars (animals who's life and spirit are a peice of me and me to them.) :fear In mortal combat their is a way to use your totem animal. If you have one i guess ahh much can be learned from video games. I allways asumed I'd be humman in any reality regardless of other options. Not that there is no connection just that i'm different. like I would never chose to be something else. only use what i wanted not become different. I wouldn't even take anti-depresents to alter my natural psychodic state becouse then i wouldnt be wich is why I often judge my own actions by asking myself if it is without honor. If an animal tottem came into play I would not reject it out right but allways question the motive behind it's influence. What outside force would want to alter fate why. certian things influence me I used to have conversations with the storms and the weather. But not latley in years have we spoken as there is little we can do for each other storms want nothing but to rebel against everything but the energy they want to share is cool. Was good to spend time with the storms. Now It's just me and fate as a whole. Fate is my boy we take care of each other. My karma's steller. I make it happen and expend alot as personel sacrifice and though I never ask I am thanked in kind by destiny. Certian former spirtual employers of mine have let me down enough for me to walk a different path so I work freelance for fate and see good and evil as part of a whole and effectivley work both sides. Certian things alter fate and fate gets pissed off like wish granting ticki gods and the like. So i refuse to ask any entity for shit I didn't earn. becouse of my connections in the SPIRIT WORLD animal tottem influences have no place for me no real use for me and I wont seek them out couse fate would take care of that if it needed to. See theres no reason for me to have that external influence :fear
