I've been here in Michigan for a couple years now and have made some decent friendships but have missed the company of people in the more alt or "darker" communities. I'm an ecologist at the University of Michigan and a musician as well (play guitar). Well, since we are few and far between, just thought I'd try and see if I could reach out and connect with others.

Hiya!

Ecology? AWE-SOME. I'm a fine art guy from a historical / schooling standpoint and somehow ended up doing computers for a living. But by nature have a deep interest in pretty much all sciences especially the life sciences (evolution in particular recently, now that I've realized I've been lied to for the first 20 years of my life hah) and astronomy/cosmology. I really don't draw a distiction between various segments of reality say between history and chemistry , as once I look deeply at any particular subject you see connections to the other subjects...ok that was random. In my eveyrday life i pretty much have to talk about that stuff with myself though there are plenty of science-minded people on DGN. (Including that scary Storm Knight guy up there)

Your use of the term "dark" is actually apropos since I've been toying hard with changing the name of DGN to be more inclusive, not sure to what exactly (I probably should start a topic about that soon).

I'm trying to think of a way to say your name in everyday conversation , failing. "Sim" is all I'm comming up with hah. (Middle Earth Flower Person!)

You ever make it down to City Club?

Anyhow welcome! Now we just gotta start the evil plot to get you to stick around and throw your two cents in on some stuff *points all around at stuff*

Thanks for the greetings!

@Troy. I'm pretty sure biology is the end all-be all of the sciences ;). Especially ecology (and even better, plant ecology), though evo is cool too. There seems to be a fondness for biology within the alt communities. Almost all the more creative people I've known seem to gravitate there as well.

"...now that I've realized I've been lied to for the first 20 years of my life"

Haven't we all been? What we are told from most "official" sources about everything concerning reality is pretty much one big fatass lie. But I digress :)

Sim is cool with me. Yeah...just another Tolkien nerd haha. I've never been to City Club though it would be cool to find some people from this community soon.

Good job updating your profile avatar.

Head on down to CC tommrow night if you want to meet some of us:

Biology is sort of the "human-centric" science we are all generally "Biophiliacs" but we need all the others to fully understand it. I like the cross-disiplinary thing that is becoming stronger and stronger as time goes on, as it really shows how strong these connections are. Organic molcules come from where,(not from earth) for example. Just sorta starts the ball rolling in that direction of "it takes all the sciences" thing. As far as we know, life only exists in one place, so in essence its a science that covers the smallest amount of "space" (as far as we know). Even though for us its the most important space. I'm sure you know this , I'm just rambling.

"Endagered Speices" brand? hah I'll have to look into that.

Plenty of them LOTR nerds around, including me. (although I am sci fi leaning generally)

I've got a LOTR board game setup on the table behind me right now actually.

I should have prefaced my saying I want to meet people with this. I am pretty much screwed time-wise until around Aug 16th because of a massive deadline. After that I will be good, but I am literally working 7 days a week, nights and all. It's not usually like this. I am just in a time crunch with this project due to getting samples back from Norway late.

I promise I will come out as soon as I'm able!!

I like your thinking Troy. I do like how interdisciplinary things have gotten in the sciences and I love studying this messy, tiny little biosphere of ours. I like to call it Midgard, as it really is kind of a middle space between the very large astronomical bodies and the very small world of particle physics.

LOL! I think we will get along just fine.

God damn deadlines! Ugh.. stress! Hope things go well.

Yeah the "earth sized" things , are what Dawkins calls "Middle World" (Middgard hah! thats the same thing i thought when i read his use of the "Middle world" term) , it does get crazy when you get to the very large realitivity-heavy stuff and the small quantum things. Although I think the concesus is that we live in a "quantum world" (that is very bizzare) but we just don't perceve these bizzare things, as we evloved only the aparatus that we needed to replicate, which doesnt invove being able to see timelines moving in different directions for instance, but apparently time is indeed not static... which doesn't make any intuitive sense at all. (just as one among a billion examples.)

I grew up being told that evolution was bullshit, took me 20 years almost before I finally decided that was just wrong, the evidince isn't just strong, its OVERWHELMING , evolution is a fact in the same way that gravity is a fact, for me thats probably a bigger revelation than to some, but it still boggles my mind how long I thought , at best there was a 50/50 chance that evolution was true. (and a zero percent chance when you go back to to my teenage years)

Well regardless we gotta get you to throw in your two cents on a few topics *nudge nudge*

Glad you showed up. Seem like a great guy.
