When I was a kid my Moms turned me on to all different kinds of music and also let me experiment with my own tastes. What I would like to know is how you developed your musical tastes and what where some of your first influences.....

In my house my parents listened to the previous generations music (for the most part) with some of "their" music mixed in. The previous generation being Frank Sinatra / Dean Martin etc. And "their" music being Elvis / Ricky Nelson / The Beach Boys, all of which I like now, but at the time as a pre and early teen couldn't stand.

I would have gotten whipped and in the doghouse for like a year if i listened to anything remotely like Ozzy / Black Sabbath. Didn't grow up in an "open minded" household. Even The Beatles were suspect (drug taking hippie pagans!) =P

Musical experimentation consisted of listening to different song on the same 8 tracks that my mom/dad approved of hah.

Great song. Written by Rodger Miller (also a good musician) but I prefer this version. Re-done by a million modern artists just like all classics. Especially in the techno and hiphop genres.

I'm a fan of Frankie / Dean & gang despite hating it growing up. These were the original cool cats.

Like most all beach boy's songs on the "fluffy" side but they really did know how to write a melody. My dad was HUGE on these guys, he never actually said it, but I assume this was his favorite "band" although he wouldn't have used terms like that.

As the lady said in blues brothers, in my house we listened to both kinds "Country" and "Western". My mom has been a coutry fan since before I was born. I grew up in the ghetto though so being exposed to Rap and Hip Hop was inevitable. My first exposure to rock was actually G'N'R's Appetite and Metallica's Black Album :jamin . I ordered them based on their covers from one of those Columbia house 12 for a penny offers when I was 13 and ended up wearing them both out. Now I listen to a little bit of everything. Oh also when I was really little so I found the old Napoleon XIV Their coming to take me away single in my moms records collection. The original vinyl one with the backward version as the B Side :peanutbutterjellytime:. I think I wore both sides out, probably had my poor mother wanting to smash the record player :).

Couple songs I was especially fond of as a kid :).

Highwayman by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson

Sweet Child of Mine by G'N'R'

I could go on but thats plenty.

P.S. I usually listen to the stuff if its and artist I know, but I song I don't have. I actually just bought that Dean Martin track off Itunes because I didn't have it :).

later on when me & the rest of the weirdos were into They Might Be Giants I was the only one that didn't think it was a "they might be giants song".
