bean
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I think it's health related, so I put it here. This is a weird question, but has anyone ever given themselves stitches? Like if you got a cut or something and couldn't afford to go to the hospital or something and needed the cut stiched up? If you have, how did you go about doing it? I'm not saying I need to gove myself stitches, but I was just curious about this topic.
Homicidalheathen
Nope, I worry to much about infection and punching good holes. I have removed them myself however. Lilith
we actually have a suture kit laying around for just the occasion, we have never had to use it but we have it, i also happen to have lidocaine and some of the stuff they use to clean ya up with befor they give ya stiches. I have the supplies but i dont really know if i could actually ever follow through with stiching some one and i honestly hope i never have an occasion ariase where i will have to use these things. We have most of this stuff due to the fact lestat tends to do alot of work in palces where a hospital just is not convient and well no insurance for the adluts in this house too is a major factor, i just cant justify making such a hge bill for some stiches if that is all that is needed if anything seems to need more then stitches i would head to the hosp to have it taken care of. i dont if it is right or wrong but if i needed to do it i would. lilith
bean
That's why this has been on my mind..I don't have health insurance, so I worry that if I get cut too deeply wtf am I supposed to do, you know? I mean obviously if I'm bleeding to death I'd have to go to the hospital, but to go just for some stitches?
The_Dark
Honestly.. Super Glue. It's what it was designed for.
Onyx
Superglue will work for superficial stuff but if you have heavy bleeding better head for the ER. It sucks that in a country so rich a lot of us can't afford a doctor.
Head Wreck
ER for heavy bleeding when i bashed my head in practice 2 weeks ago sunday i found sticky stitures useless, wound has to be clean to be applied. i was bleeding way too much for it to get a chance to clean and stick (worrying thing is after pulling a bone chip out with my fingers i still didnt feel it, i only knew i did it as i tasted blood and felt damp on one side of the head. pinch and pack off to hospital. (or if your stupid like me, pinch, wait till stops and carry on, applying honey when i got home) as to sewn stitures. i leave that to pro's unless the shits hit fan. bean
Thanks guys. I found these things called butterfly closures that are really sticky, are waterproof, and are supposed to hold a wound closed...looks like they should work. And of course if I'm bleeding to death, I would go to the hospital lol.
Head Wreck
aye. sticky stitures. make sure you wipe the area your going to stick with a clean damp cloth or an antiseptic wipe before sticking them down or they'll just fall off

honeymustard02
I wouldn't. You don't know how a wound should be cleaned, and you could end up with a nasty looking scar. I'm sure some people have, but I just don't think it's a good idea. Now me my brother is a nurse (yes a male nurse, keep the jokes to yourself) and he can do stitches. So really I wouldn't have to go to the hospital :D

DarkVampire
You can always cauterize the wound. It would be quick and easy and quite painful but at least it'll stop bleeding.
kellygrrrrrl
I have to go and get stitches removed from my mouth today.........YAY! Wondering if it will hurt? And also, will I have to be careful of "Dry Socket" still 10 days later..............

honeymustard02
HEY! No laughing......... :tear <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I had stitches in my mouth before, but mine fell out way before they were supposed to. I had a hole in my gums for a long time. Didn't hurt but it felt weird and I would have to clean the food out so it didn't get yucky.

Fierce Critter
Heh. Jon and I both still owe ER fees from when both of us ended up needing hand stitches when neither of us was insured. Jon owes about $600-$700, I owe about $400 - and I didn't even end up with actual stitches, they decided it wasn't necessary. This is 6 years later. If that's the only thing on your credit record, it generally won't affect things. Jon got a truck, motorcycle, and house - but that was the ONLY thing on his record. If it's bad enough - go to the ER. Pay the bill when you can. If it wasn't so bad, like mine, butterfly closures. Just make sure you squeeze the sides of the cut together REALLY tight and strap those butterflies on super-tight to start with. Loosen them up once bleeding has stopped and scabbing has begun. I had a sword go through my left hand but my instructor knew how to do it up I still got the scar but no infection ever happened.
wheresmypiggy
Get yourself some iodine and a lighter. Who cares if you scar. I have plenty. I have a $15,000 hospital bill right now and I signed a DNR. They couldn't even tell me what was wrong with me. I'd rather die than pay those quacks to do nothing. I have cauturized my own wounds before. If the cuts are on your arms, legs, or torso you should be fine doing it yourself. Head wounds are much more serious and a doctor should take a look at them. Normally you are better off going to a physician who only charges you $70 to walk in the door and lets you know if you need serious medical attention than paying a couple thousand dollar hospital bill for them to give you a bandage. Homicidalheathen
No. What would you use? A sewing needle that is kinda big.....and string that isn't steril and/or does not disolve? When I was younger I almost had a freind do it but lied to the hospital and got it done then had my freind take them out. I had to lie and use a freinds Ins and ID to get the stitches in as I was under age and homeless. This country will go bomb innocent people before it will look out for it's own. Aralis
I have cut my own out but would never stitch myself up. I cut the top of my foot real bad. The heat duct got caught on the edge of my pj bottoms and it came outta the floor and flipped up and the blade part came down right on top of my foot under my big toe. My foot was left cut wide open and you could see down to the bone. Blood was squirting and it was a huge mess. I did not want to go to the ER since I did not have insurance but my boyfriend insisted and his mother who was a nurse took one look and said you HAVE to go. I had to get a tetnus shot right in the huge open wound. Talk about pain! I almost kicked the lady! Another uncomforting thing was the Indian Doctor came in to look at the wound before she did anything and was looking at my arms and head for the wound. I was thinking "This is the lady that is gonna stitch me up????"..lol I have a scar now and I really think she did not give me enough stitches. My hospital bill was like $800!! I never did pay it. I think my boyfriend payed some of it though.
