phee
On a board that is focused often on gloom and doom, thought it might be cool to have a thread that talks about the best or most influential "Coming of Age" films. Here are some of my favorites. Stand By Me: Perhaps the quintessential coming of age movie in a drama sense. Really gives a person the feeling of being there and remembering, even if it was a time before a lot of us were born. Time Bandits: The universe from a child's perspective, brilliant, funny, and spooky at times. The adults are very dumb in this film, and it's the short folks who have the advantage. The Bicycle Thief: Perhaps not the first thing that people think about when they think of coming of age, but the boy in the movie watching his father unravel does involve growing up and seeing the world for the ugly place it is. Destroit
Trying SO hard to think of this one movie that, as preteens, we were nuts over. It was four girls, and I remember one of the "young" versions of the girls was played by Christina Ricci and her older version was, I believe, played by Rosie O'Donnell (what a terrible transition that was ) Kk...looked it up, and it's probably cheesy now (haven't seen it since I was like 12), but it's called Now and Then. Maybe I'll re-watch it, I always find it funny to watch movies I used to like as a kid/teen to see how I view them now.
phee
One could say the whole "Harry Potter" series is one massive coming of age movie.
n0Mad
I like The Princess Bride. In the beginning, Fred Savage isn't a fan of romance. "Is this a kissing book?" But in the end, "No, it's okay. I don't mind so much." Ah, how quickly they mature.

I have noticed that a lot of movies have coming of age moments, or have coming of age flashbacks.... but not many actually have it as majority of the content of the film. Destroit
Would Juno kinda at least fit the bill? Loved it, and I didn't think I was going to. Michael Cera is awesome, not sure what it is about his acting I like I just do, and the movie was overall clever.
phee
Another one of note: The Road, very powerful coming of age post apocalyptic sci-fi.
