DHS workers getting death threats?

You mean all that time spent sending in letters and phone calls to get handouts when they could be using the time spent sending "death threats" writing resumes and finding a job?

IMAGINE that...in Wayne County? Naw...people wouldn't be that lazy there, would they?

I understand there are hard working families who need assistance and went through hard times losing a job/house and they need these handouts. They can thank spangers, frauders, and junkies who abuse the system and drain it to try and sit on their ass and do nothing all day for it not being available, imo.

We can only over-extend the rest of society to cover the other half of society's debt so far...after awhile you have to hit the breaks. Such is life.

Okay, I understand your anger regarding people who actually are too lazy to find work. That isn't the only factor here. There is also A SHORTAGE OF JOBS.

Also consider that there are opportunity costs to each job.

That is to say, that the hours you spend (and the money you spend on gas to get there and other work expenses) COULD potentially be spent finding you a job with better compensation, benefits, etc.

And it doesn't really help to take a McJob across town that pays only minimum wage on a part-time schedule and mandates that you not take another job because they want you to be available at the drop of a hat (most major retailers are jerks like this; Walmart most notoriously), when it will be only a matter of time before they let you go (that is, FIRE you--looks bad on your resume and makes it hard to find more work) and most of your income actually ends up going toward things (like transportation) so that you can keep that job. (Yeah, you get a tax break on it, but when you're in that low an income bracket, that means nothing: you're already paying nothing in taxes and will get it all back at the end of the year---you need the money NOW.)

Anyway, says a recent statistic:

With about 14.09 million people unemployed in June, there were nearly 4.5 potential job seekers for each opening, down from about 4.6 in May. Of the total jobs in June, only 2.3 percent were considered by employers to be vacant and likely to be filled within 30 days, which is why it's so hard to for unemployed people to find work.

Article here.

Cutting off welfare to many of these people means that the rug is getting pulled out from under them and they have no further recourse: they are a large step closer to starving on the streets. That SUCKS for those of them who HAVE legitimately been looking for work.

Once again... TWB has managed to capture the essence of this very complicated issue in one post... kudos Miss.

If it was as simple as "WELFARE BAD! EVERYONE ON WELFARE IS A LAZY JERK." Well then that would be easy... but unfortunately, that is not the case.... there are a small amount of people who 100% abuse it, there are a small amount of people who 100% need it.... then there is everything in between.

To add >>> Death threats are stupid... but people who are desperate and in fear of loosing the food in their mouths do desperate and stupid things.

I am sure that most people on welfare wish that getting a job was as easy as writing a letter.

Is the government trying to make things worse? What do they think is going to happen to these families? Remember Hooverville?

I don't agree with people abusing the system and collecting welfare their whole lives, but times are tough right now and a lot of people need help. People just can't find work, especially if they have limited job skills. Do they think that a magical job fairy is going to come along and fix everything?

Well you know, cutting benefits to the poorest people in the country is better than the OMG NO DONT RAISE TAXES ON BILLIONAIRES THAT DON'T PAY TAXES ANYHOW. grrr (Key debate in congress right now, no taxes, ESPECIALLY on the rich, who you know, own the politicians)

Although death threats should just automatically put you in the queue for being euthanized for being a moron.

Odd thing is , ideologically im more of a Libertarian, that is , very pro-capitalism and free-market, and light on social programs, but in some cases its just too extreme. Not that the people pushing for the program cuts (mostly republicans) are libritarians just in this case the argument happens to coincide with it. (Few republicans nor democrats believe in real free markets per se despite the rhetoric.)

It seems to me that welfare benefits should be kept, but with recipients being required to do mandatory work on various projects. We sorely need more trains and buses for instance.

I think that is a great idea actually.... have them repair infrastructure... That's kind of what FDR did during the great depression... put people to work somehow.

Welfare should be a temporary thing... If they are gonna cut anyone off, they should cut off the people LIVING off of it for YEARS, or people who have additional children while on welfare. {at least make some kind of penalty.. Not just give them MORE $$}

I revived assistance for about 3-ish years... I pulled myself out of the hole and VIOLA, I'm a big girl now and I take care of myself and my family.

Putting aside the debate of if we agree or disagree with the welfare cap. I ask the question what are all these people going to do? I mean say they just cant find a jobs. What is going to become of them?

They become homeless

They leave the state and go live with family

Find some other means to live off of...

That's all I can think of.
