I can't count how many times I've had to say "you don't have to be GOTHIC". I've long toyed with changing DGN to something similar, that sounds more like what DGN actually consists of. That implies "dark side" or "Gothic friendly" or "Gothic tolerant" or generally just "outside of the mainstream" mentalities. Something like "Detroit Underground" or something with some similar meaning, maybe even something that has the same (or similar) acronym to DGN.

But what that would be exactly I'm not sure.

too bad "( You Don't Have To Be In) Detroit (Or) Gothic.Net" is too long!

personally i'd say keep it the same since you know the old adage of "why mess with perfection".....and then people may have a difficult time finding it. IMO it's like changing a baseball team's uniform. now the early 1980's Chicago white sox "pajama's" look as designed by the owner's wife had to go. but if the tigers ever change the olde-English "D" for some other crap----oh dear Lord.

i know you are tired of having to explain the "you don't need to be goth" line. but...can't you just have a subbie title or line under the name which states "where all the cool people go for alternative and eclectic musical and fashion lifestyles (or tastes)".

i'd keep it IMO and just add another line, Troy!

I agree keep it the same It's to well known of a name, changing it might cause more damage then good. You could always list the different groups we tend to attract on the cards.

i draw a parallel between this and the concept of moving 'dgn night' to another location. dgn night stays at cc for the sake of consistency, because it's easy for people to remember - "dgn night = always saturdays!"

same thing with the name - change the name, people will wonder, "is this the same place? not sure, so maybe i'll try somewhere else!?" kind of like a band changing their name & no one being able to find them anymore...

i say, leave it the same. consistency is key for recognition.

I say leave it. I think it becomes too diluted and the original mission is lost if we water-down the name with a more encompassing term. I think, even though "it's just a name", it's also a loose label of who we are, it's taking a baby step in the wrong direction.

Usually when a company chooses to change it's name they do it out of desperation to get a new pull or because they feel they need to change to keep there numbers up, but in the process lose there old pull.

Example: When Sears bought out K-mart they decided to change all there K-marts into Sears essentials, people didn't see it as a cheap Sears but an expensive K-mart, the new crowd wasn't strong enough without the old crowds back up.

Another great point that I thought of just now. It's been mentioned that promoters are constantly having to say, "Well, it's not JUST for goths or scene people..." Not to be harsh, but...if that's the case, don't you think maybe our promoters might be aiming at the demographic? What's the point of having a gothic-haven if we're metaphorically passing out DGN promotion cards to the Abercrombie and Fitch crowd. I understand letting non-goths on the board if they have interest, but WHY promote directly to them? Too much of that and we'll be as bad as Vampire Freaks.

Even in the first post, to reinforce my point, we should never consider ourselves "gothic tolerant"! We're supposed to be "mainstream tolerant". This is the haven where we can come and not have to worry about being "tolerated" but embraced...uhm darkly. Preppy people should have to be shown tolerance here, not the other way around.

I agree with this statement.

If you change DGN's name, I'll have to change mine, and I really don't want my name to be Seriously Normal Person with a Side of Sauce. Thanks.

Plus, it's not like everyone else has completely honest so no explanation is needed names anyway or else the Tea Party would just be a long string of epithets.
