GASP - The Choking Game

I have spent the past week alternating between grief/absolute sorrow, and anger/totally livid. I'm sad that my dear friends lost their 14 year old daughter, and I'm pissed off that cause of death was totally senseless. As part of my coping, I would like to share something I shared on Facebook.

I can't remember who I heard this from and the validity of it, but it has been said that there is only one real cause of death: lack of oxygen to the brain. Think about it. Heart attack or stroke? Clogging of blood vessels which prevents oxygen from being delivered to the brain. Violence? Internal or external bleeding means the blood is spilling on the ground and not delivering oxygen to the brain. Diseases, alcohol and drug overdoses, drowning, fire ... you name it. The conditions are different for each one but the end result is lack of oxygen to the brain.

"The Choking Game" is a misnomer as 'game' implies that somebody wins. But think about it. You are purposely restricting the flow of oxygen to your brain which is the #1, the only, cause of death. Sure, you might get a little high, but there is no winning in that. It's not a matter of if, but when, this activity causes death. And when somebody dies, everybody loses.

Two very dear friends of mine, almost like family, just lost their 14 year old daughter to this senseless activity. This is the most horrific thing anybody could go through and I cannot imagine the pain and grief they are suffering. Please, please, please talk to your kids, your friends' kids, your neighbors, everybody, about not just "The Choking Game" but about making smart decisions. Everything you do affects everyone around you like a ripple in a pond. Think about cause and effect relationships and consider all outcomes, who it will affect, and how, before taking action. Then, take the right action. Make the smart choice.

You want to get high? I don't blame you; it feels good. But don't do it with drugs, asphyxiation, or other malefic means. Those are weak, short lived, and often lead to suffering and death. Instead, do what I do. Exercise and get high on adrenaline and enjoy that feeling you get when you feel good about yourself. Take a walk in the woods and commune with nature getting high on all the wonders of creation. Learn to play an instrument and perform in concerts. Get high on the butterflies in your stomach before hand and the goosebumps of a job well done after. When you're waiting in line at the market, let the woman behind you go first and offer to help carry her bags out to her car. The high you get from helping others and improving life is far greater than that caused by harmful activities and destruction.

Think before you act and make smart decisions. Make me proud. Make yourself proud!

"The Choking Game" has been around for years. The only way I can explain that kids are still doing it is that parents are not talking to their kids about it. It is so tragic to lose a child but to lose them to this would be torturous. I really love all of the suggested ways to get high without drugs, all very true.
