For people that Sew and such...

Recommended Posts

How did you get "into" sewing and other craft type stuff?

My mother had a sewing machine around, and I took home economics in high school (mainly to meet girls.. shh).. but never really got "bit" by the desire to keep doing it. I made a latch hook rug once and a windsock and other random things when i was a teenager. I wish i had the skill of sewing so I could make some things that just don't exist in my size (or are retardation-level expensive to get) but it just never occurred to me to do it myself. That is until recently, I've been toying with trying to get back into such things.

I took sewing in middle school and can sew a little bit. I recently had my mom's old vintage singer in the shop and it works great but I never have any time to play with it. I did make my kids some pajama pants which turned out ok. I don't even have time to take a class but maybe one day when .....nevermind:(

When some magical free time pops into existance? :no Maybe books about sewing or some such? That way you can just fit it in whenever, rather than have to plan out a big block of time for a class every week or some such.

Growing up poor, we needed clothes, shopping for them was not an option and mother had a sewing machine.

She grew up in the south with 9 siblings and knowing how to sew was a necessity.

To be honest, as a kid I thought everyone made their own clothes and only went shopping if you didn't have time to make what you needed.

We only went shopping for shoes and they consisted of $3 S.S. Kresge specials in summer and $5 rubber duckies with plastic bags inside for winter.

I was about 14 when I read the first issue of Lenore, I fell in love with the clock monster and decided I wanted to make him into a stuffed animal. I bought the fabric, the buttons for the eyes, and pipe cleaners for claws. I had done bead-work before so I kinda had an idea how to sew. So I made him, then my cousin started bugging me to make her barbie clothes and now I make little creatures out of felt for my monsters. I just finished a frankenstein for my oldest and I'm working on the bride for my niece.
