DGN Will Self Destruct On June 19th [ saved for now, yay,but its comming again]

On june 19th the hosting/support/cpanel bill for DGN will hit, and we don't have the money. For some unknown reason its $30 (it should be $50 (and was) but for god knows what reason they are only charging us 30 apparently now, which, I'm not going to argue with... lets hope they dont wake up) soon before (or) after there will be a domain name renewal (8.99).

If you feel like donating please do.

Its not quite as dire as it sounds as we do have a few dollars left in the DGN bank account due to some generous donors a few months ago, one larger one in particular that finally got gobbled up this month, but we don't have enough to pay the upcoming bills.

Before that date the licence for IPB will hit but we don't "need" that , just hope nothing beyond my ability to fix goes wrong with the board, as we will be on our own support wise without that (and EVENTUALLY something will go wrong that is probably unfix-able by a non professional)

God DAMN I need to go back to work. (Tried four times, made it a day and a half before HR sent me home once (the other times didn't go so well), and only had to go to the hospital 1/4th of thoes times) maybe a few more tries... )

I'm in the same boat, dumped so much cash into this thing getting harder and harder to justify it. It's my fault really, the last "troy goes poof and dissapears for months" getting sick thing really fucked the activity and I've not got as much energy on the rebound as I usually do to get it back up to speed, and there is no real "buffer" money / time (at least not as much as usual) like there usually is even with some helpful donations from yourself.

So the bill came.

Its actually due right now, but they typically give you 5 days to pay up (thus the june 19th date listed above). We also have the software licence bill wich I didn't think was due until next month , but that isn't critical (I just have to hope nothing goes wrong with DGN that I can't fix myself, which sucks but is not critical) We did have to renew one of the domain names (happens automatically , that is "detritgothic.net") which cut into what little donation money we had saved up.

I tried to be as honest as possible about what money I could "scrounge up" and the only places I can take money from are 1. The "rent" (living with mom at the moment but this is not even negotiable or I'm just a douchebag) 2. The health insurance money (if I don't pay this for one month they can drop my coverage and I go to the doctors weekly). 3. The phone (I don't have internet acesss and I have the second to cheapest plan they offer that has text messages) 4. Gas money (already spent this month).

Even at our low activity rate right now, its like not even .50 cents a person. Unfortunately, its usually only a small handful of people that even bother to think about it.

Having it go offline for more than a few days hurts, having it go offline for say a month is really, really bad in terms of all the traffic we will lose.

So in 5 days (mayabe sooner maybe a little later) DGN goes offline unless I can come up with something somehow. Which, doesn't mean its offline forever, but it might mean that.

What ya need is someone that can do a good ol' fashioned fund raiser. That could help you by not only bringing in a few bucks but could boost activity too.

Unfortunately at least for this month its too late for that. Its a good idea though, but you know how bad I am with running stuff like that especially asking for money. (although I'm trying harder) It might be moot in 3 days though. (and they apparently realized they were undercharging us for like the last 6 months, ugh)

And I don't have my Marblez to run such things these days.

What's the bottom line?

In (probably) 3 days (its vague as to when exactly "ok we gave you enough time to pay your cut off" is but, its typically 5 days, so thats probably june 19th.

The bottom bottom line is we need about a minimum of $20 bucks, (we have roughly 30) due to them realizing they were undercharging us (30 instead of 50), and one of the domain name payments hitting between when I posted this and now.

Really we need $45 , as we are now "unlicensed" and if anything breaks beyond what I or the mods know how to fix, the site goes down and stays down, due to having unsupported software).

The software licence is pretty cheap ($25 a year) we just don't have it, and I don't have it at least not for another 2 weeks.

I'm toying with just spending the money that is supposed to go to my phone bill, or just not leaving the house for the next 2 weeks and using some money I need for a car repair (been driving it anyway but its not safe) if the money doesn't appear somehow.

An uncle of mine gave me a few bucks but I know he doesn't want it spent on this. =/

Actually we are saved... for now. Yay. We just got a donation that should mostly cover it for another month. Thanks ... you! (not sure if it was meant to be anonymous or not yet)

Although we will just be in the same boat again next month if the activity doesn't pick up. (Its always about the activity in the long run, as more activity encourages more eyeballs, and more eyeballs encourages everything else (people to go out to "things" (events DGN night whatever, donations, MORE activity, which then just snowballs into more of everything.)

How do we fix this on going problem?

The problem is when your at low activity, that tends to make even LESS posts snowball lower, and you need a core of like 4-5 people that go out of their way to post a lot (and by a lot I dont mean 20 posts a day, I just mean some significant number larger than 0 or 1 , pretty much daily, even when they arent in the mood and either drag new people or old people back to fix that problem.

That's always been the system, and it always works if there is energy for it. Unfortunately my personal energy is a bit low (and my cash to leave the house and go out and do it is even lower so we need a lot of help).

I like the idea, and I'm all for it, I can support such a thing , but I can't run it, or at least not be the "main person" running it, someone else would have to. I can't even stick it out at CC consistently, I just get too sick randomly, if its an actual "event" that REQUIRES whoever is running it to be reliable and not have to bail out randomly. Or even really dissapear for a few hours to "calm down" and then come back.

We could do a 50/50 draw. Perhaps CC would allow us to do it on DGN night. 50/50 draws are a guaranteed money maker and require very little planning. All we need is a role of tickets, an empty can and a couple of mods to sell tickets.

I suggest a DGN garage sale of sorts.

Possibility 1: A real live sale at a specific location where people can just bring stuff (goth or not) to donate. Even professional services can be donated,like hairstyling or psychic readings or you get the point. These items can be advertised within the scene and sold all at once. A 50/50 raffle is also a possibility at this event.

Possibility 2: An avid experienced ebayer collects the donated booty and lists them with all the proceeds minus expenses going to DGN.

Possibility 1 is my favorite as it has added marketing and in person gathering potential. I have some stuff I could donate - including a couple of those snazzy purple DetroitGothic.net window decals from years back.

Yikes I thought I sent you a PM and an email both like a week ago (the 15th I think)... asking if you meant to send it privately or not and saying thanks. ouch .

It happens automatically on the donation "meter" thing unless people send me donations directly, many people ask me to not post it publicly. If you DID use the donation tracker and it just didn't work please tell me (i have no way to really test it directly myself) that's a serious problem I need to look into if it is not working. I mean i still get the donations fine but the whole point of that thing is to give recognition to one-time donations toward a monthly goal.
