Thoughts about Doctor Who in general? Specific suggestions?

I've often had people suggest this too me, and I used to watch it as a young kid. Somewhere in my mid 20's I tried to start again and it just seemed too "campy" and unrealistic to me. But, people that normally are "on the same wavelength" as me, seem to keep suggesting it. Somehow the campyish aspects of Star Trek and Star Wars i can ignore I think becasue i have an emotional attachment to them, but other stuff I tend to just reject, as I'm big on more "serious" sci fi lets call it. But I'm going to try this again.

I did some research and there is SO much of it that its hard to know where to start (and I really don't want to start with the 60s).

So I'm going to try starting with "The 9th Doctor" (2005) Christopher Eccleston, which (apparently) was the "return" of doctor who after period of no-who.

Really? wow. I don't like american idol but i've seen it, having never seen Doctor Who feels like "i never saw ketchup" to me. hah.

I will probably get around to watching a newer one sometime, since I love the writing for Sherlock and I can appreciate the more PG-rated way of taking a serious story (which the writer, whose name I can't remember, was talking about in an interview).

Its sort of like.. hard to describe, not serious enough to take seriously, and not comedic enough to take as a comedy. Which sounds ok I mean the "Dramatic Comedy" formula is well developed, but in the context of science fiction i'm having a hard time not yelling "ugh! fake!". It feels like Red Dwarf (sci fi comedy) but is taking it self seriously enough that you can tell you also are supposed to be taking it somewhat seriously. (On the third episode of this 9th doctor series atm) But I know people like it, and I had the same problem with Buffy (which also has legions of fans). I'm trying though. I've "learned to like" a lot of things, (Frank Sinatra & pals,Punk, Classical music, Shakespeare ... long list) that I didnt start out liking but "taught" myself to like, which I now do, genuinely enjoy, maybe this might be one of those things.

Do like the theme song, so there is something so far. =D

Finished downloading all the 10th doctor stuff, haven't started it yet.

I love the show. I started with the 11th and moved back to the 9th. Dr Who was a show I thought would be silly the first 10 minutes watching in. After those 10 minutes, I was hooked..

Took me a few hours of watching to "accept" it for what it is (as an adult that is, as a child I used to watch it fairly regularly). That is some sort of middle ground between a serious show and a joke/unrealistic sci fi. But I'm enjoying it now, just have to not think to hard about whats going on and just watch it on a "popcorn/fun" level.

Just barely started in on the 10th doctor now. (started with the 9th not counting random childhood memories)

and MAN the rest of the time lords must have been dumbasses or something, since they all died and the Daleks just seem to keep coming back and back. lol (although somehow i suspect no race in the Dr. Who story line is "really" dead forever, being the space operaish type of show

  • 2 weeks later...

Finding myself making random connections to things that happen with Dr. Who stuff.

I said "Wibbley Wobbly Timey Wimey!" and "Exterminate!" like 5X times today, lol.

Somethings wrong with me I find the daleks robot form to be kind of cute sometimes. There is the episode were there are only 4 daleks left and they are going to defeat the 5 million cyber-men without batting an eyelash, and then rose says something about the doctor and they all back up like "oh shit, the doctor!". Funny.

Only one "season" (actualy a year of "specials" apparently) left of the 10th doctor to watch now /sniffles.

REALLY liking all the overlapping story arcs and ideas that don't get resolved until like 10 episodes later and such. Never noticed that when I was a little kid watching this show randomly (but apparently it was always a key dr. who convention).

Siren and I both tend to make a lot of River Song quotes throughout our day. You will soon see the amazing that is River.

Thats the "spacesuit girl" from The Library episodes right? I've tried hard not to read any spoilers but I tend to nerd out on sci fi shows and a lot of details are hard to see just watching the show, ran across her name a few times reading stuff about the story arc details and such. (A lot of things about say "Bad Wolf" that are not, paritucllary apparent just watching the show, just as a random example.)

I try not to get attached to Dr. Who characters.. I know what always seems to happen to them /sniffles hah. I knew Donna Noble was fucked from the start, /sadface , not "hot" enough. :crybaby: I didn't really mind the last two GFs going bye bye, felt sad when she was leaving. "The Doctordonna" hah.

Having troulbe deciding if I should try and slow down on the show or not, which I do sometimes when I start "running out of episodes" to watch (theres tons of shows to be watched) and want to savor them. This is usually more for shows that are now canceled though. Still haven't watched the final few episodes of a couple of favorite shows.

Life of a time lord is so hard, live forever, new GF upgrade every couple years... poor guy. pfft!

Now I have to do something important like, make a custom Dr. Who key chain of some obscure sort. *nods*

    • I am currently floored.   FedEx did a massive 6 box delivery to the wrong address.  I had an autoship order scheduled to arrive before this past weekend.  Nothing showed up.  I contacted the order site and they had a link for the order...a photo of all my boxes thrown in the snow and up the sidewalk of a residence that was not mine.   You would think that at some point, the driver would have looked at the delivery address after they kept throwing box upon box at this location with no shelter from the elements.  They didn't even knock on the door to inform the residents that massive 65+ pound boxes were left all over their walkway.  Nope.  Just dumped them, took a photo as they were walking away and left.   I wonder what the person who found all of those misdelivered boxes must have been thinking when they saw them.  Maybe they kept everything to use, distribute or sell.  No idea.  No claim was filed on that end as of yet.   Fortunately for me, one of the sites that I ordered from, replaced everything at no extra cost.   Unfortunately, now I'm concerned for the other items yet to be delivered.   Needless to say, I'll be watching my notifications like a hawk.

    • ~~~~~ Yeah, thank you for the check-in.   Happy to say it was all a misunderstanding.  But she pulled out her "ghetto" and that's when things went South.  I get very professional minded when I enter into situations like that because when someone starts bring the court into conversations, I'm in court 2 times a year, every year, so don't go there with me because I will get legal all over you.   She did try to change what she thought she might have said, but I had to call her on it because it's all in written text.  Then she apologized and we were able to have a decent conversation.   I know I joke about me talking so much that people don't hear what I say except for keywords that they are looking for, but that is exactly what happened here.  She heard "payment", "money" and "help out".  It was crazy.  I literally had to have the entire conversation all over again, but I definitely condensed it to only address those 3 words.   Things are back on track, but I emphasized that if she every needed clarification for anything, please say something first instead of jumping to conclusions, then questioning that conclusion, then answering that conclusion, then getting upset at the answer and taking it out on someone who doesn't have a clue what the San Juan Hill just happened.   But this is exactly the reason I do everything with a paper trail.
