The music industry sucks

So how many people have broken a CD or allowed it to get so scratched that it is simply destroyed? How many times have you had to go buy another CD because of a reason like this?

I broke my damn Cruxshadows CD the other day and I'm fuckin pissed. Why can't record companies let you mail them the broken/scratched CD and send you a replacement? Is it that hard? Oh wait, what am I thinking....

Ok yes I know what you mean. I think they use just a slight bit of adhesive to keep the cd from rocking/rolling around during shipping then when You go to take it out for the first time you have to be real careful. All I did was take the cd out of it's holder once and my fingernail scratched it real bad. I had to replace a new cd! I am thinking of burning copies of all of my cd's. My kids like the same music anyway.

Also, FYE sucks! Not one Orgy cd yesturday in the whole store. Didn't have a cd they said they had when I called....they made me walk all the way through the mall and my knee was bothering me....then they didn't have it anyway.

Most of the music I listen too I have to order online because the stores just don't carry what I like. And finding new music is hard for me because I don't listen to anything main stream.

If you buy a CD and it's scratched coming out of the case, take it back that day or the very next and with your receipt, *usually* stores will exchange it for you.

As for the record companies, well, meh, they just suck but they are a business industry which is why they see the $$.

This is Why I-Pod is so cool.  You pay a buck or so, and get to keep it forever!

Even though I do not own one yet.....I really really want one too....

Yes, assuming your hard drive doesn't fail and you have a back-up. Also, if you reformat/reinstall your OS or buy a new computer, remember to de-authorize your old computer for playing your purchased iTunes songs. There is a limit to how many computers can be authorized to play the song as well as how many times you can burn it to a CD. In fact, if you're coughing up $10+ for a whole album on iTunes, just buy the CD and rip MP3's to your hard drive. Oh well. Fucking iTunes. Whoa... sorry. </rant>

Yeah, the music industry sucks. Can you really not get replacement CD's? I'd imagine there's some system in place (aside from exchanging it at the store), but am not surprised there isn't.

This is why i buy vinyl-

1. less expensive (about $7 less, on average, if purchased new)

2. more durable (and maintaining an album is much easier)

3. better sound quality (records have a greater frequency

    range than compact discs)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Oh yeah, there are great reasons to buy vinyl, but iPods (and CDs for that matter) are so much more portable! I've yet to see a car with a skip free turntable. ;) Ok, I take that back... but you know what I mean.

Sorry, i was in a class earlier, so it's taken me a while to see that a couple of you referenced me in your comments...

I also like vinyl because it gives you something tangible to hold on to, I like ipods, but with buying a record, you get the lyrics, the cover art, all of the recording details, etc,. I do have CDs but i don't feel like i have the real thing until I go out and get the album, CDs are just what i listen to in my car or at work, but they don't last long, they are expensive and they sound terrible, comparitively.

Well, the same could be said for clothing manufacturers:

If you rip a sock, why doesn't K-Mart just get you a new pair?

Well, cos YOU broke the sock either from misuse or just wearing it out.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Socialist, but what you're talking about -- a company essentially paying for a customer's mistreatment or general overuse of a product -- is absolutely ridiculous. Gawd, talk about an ill-concieved sense of entitlement....

Yeah but CDs aren't made the way they were back when they were first introduced.. They're a lot more flimsy now. I've got a CD that my dad bought way back when CDs were a new thing and it's thick, durable and hard to scratch. They cut costs by making CDs out of cheaper materials.

Why is it so ridiculous for record companies to offer CD replacement? I'd even be willing to pay 1 dollar for a replacement, after all that is about 8x more the cost they pay to actually make a CD (the CD itself). But they don't.

All I did was take the cd out of it's holder once and my fingernail scratched it real bad.

See? You can scratch CDs today with a FINGERNAIL! Of the old CDs my dad has, you can drop it on concrete, data side down and not see a single scratch.. Don't dare do that with a newer CD.

If you pay 18 bucks for a CD there should be some kind of replacement program, especially if they're going to use cheaper materials to make them with.

So are Craftsman, Snap-On, Matco, Mac tool companies insane for giving a lifetime warranty (no questions asked, no matter what) on their tools??

I can take a wrench and heat it up with a torch and snap it in half and go to Sears and get another one free of charge.. Now of course not all companies can afford to do this but we're talking about the bastard Record Industry here. You mean to tell me they can't afford 14 cents to make a replacement CD? BS.

So, tell me -- how much of your music is on an independent (as in not "Domino, a division of Sony Records")? Cos, I tell you, when albums are released on small-scale, the companies are just BARELY staying afloat.

Even so, for every individual copy of an album that is cut, there are contracts that record labels of any size must oblige -- which means, yeah, raw materials for that CD, tray-card included, may cost 14c, but there are contracts that must be obliged for this copy pressed.

So are Craftsman, Snap-On, Matco, Mac tool companies insane for giving a lifetime warranty (no questions asked, no matter what) on their tools??

That is a COURTESY that the company offers -- it is not an entitlement that you have as a customer. They realise full well that they are taking a risk that people will abuse their well-made and expensive-to-make product, but those companies that offer "total replacement guarantee, no questions" are taking a well-informed RISK.

That is not a risk small record labels like, say, Neue Aesthetik or Hollows Hills can afford to take -- they'll lose money, go bankrupt and then what?

Major labels can afford to offer that courtesy, don't get me wrong, but (and you can call me a snob for this all you like) if you're posting to a GOTH forum, why do you care about music on major labels, who can afford to take such risks? Wouldn't you rather support the small-name band on the small-name label than those greedy fucks at Sony Records? And just for the record, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson are SO major-label crapola -- buy their albums and you're just feeding the machine.

But anyway...

If you think that record companies should offer a replacement programme as a courtesy, go to them (in a proper snail-mail letter -- most e-mails are ignored or replied with a form letter) and tell them that -- but since you complained about a Cruxshadows CD, you're likely to be told that the label can't afford the risk because the head of the label is living on canned-goods (or at least something similar).

Furthermore, small labels, since they often ARE just barely staying afloat, don't have much of a choice in their raw materials, do they? If you have only $15 to spend on groceries for the week, you probably wouldn't buy imported cheeses and a swordfish steak cos that may only feed you for one or two nights. No, you'd get a loaf of Wonderbread and the super-cheapola bucket of peanut butter so that you can feed yourself for the entire week. Small labels have always had to make due with Not The Best Materials -- but hey, they're evil! They're so evil, they SIGNED The Cruxshadows to their label when a Major Label would have laughed that band out the door! They actually signed the Cruxshadows and produced a CD for you to buy -- despite the fact that a negligible percentage of album sales for a year would be the latest Cruxshadows album!

Ok well I'm not going to argue this any further for the sake that I really honestly don't give a fuck enough to bother with it. I didn't put enough thought into my post so you are right and I am wrong. I'm just going to have to hop on Bear Share or something and download the songs off that CD. This topic was mostly a rant and not meant to be taken this far into economical outlines as to why or why not things should be or why things are the way they are.

Thats true. As a singer I spend way to much time online or with my ear pressed to the C/D player trying to figure out lyrics.

I do miss buying an album and the cover art being so huge!

Do they still sometimes put free posters in the Album Jacket?

Oh yeah. That's another reason why i like buying albums: they're big! Yes, they still do all sorts of cool things. -And today, record players and records themselves are even better quality than they used to be (not to mention speakers and amps), most often. Let's see, by you, try Record Time on northbound Gratiot just a bit north of 11 mile or maybe even CarCity records on the east side of Harper, between 8 and 9 mile roads-both of these places sell new and used records. There's a few more places on the west side: Repeat the Beat, Neptune records, Record Time ferndale, also, a place in Hamtramck-Hamtramck records and a few places in the city of Detroit.

You can get new needles and that at some of these record stores or at DJ stores or Guitar Center.

Those suck, for all the reasons listed and on top of that... audio quality is worse than if you actually have it on a CD.

i buy a cd and copy it, CD gets put to one side and the copy gets played.

that way i dont get upset when something gets damaged or my multichanger for the car gets nicked.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That was my solution. Especailly since I'm a DJ and I like my CDs A LOT.

3. better sound quality (records have a greater frequency

    range than compact discs)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah but play it enough times and that quality goes down. Gets destroyed little by little with each play. Unless you want to get the 7-8000 dollar laser turntable.

http://www.elpj.com/

http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question487.htm has some great info as well comparing DVD audio to CD audio.

Whats even more neat is if you take a microscope to a vinyl record, you can actually see the waveform.

-Yes, well, they still lasts longer than a CD and again, they're easier to maintain-if you maintain them properly, it's not even a worry.

Ya know I find it odd that Disney's Movie sector will replace a DVD free of charge but their music sector wont replace a CD. Of course we are talking about the same basterds that make basic cable cost so much "Don't want fucking ESPN, ESPN2, 3 or 4 don't give them to me and lower my fucking costs!!"

1. New vinyl under $30.00? Where?

2. I have to pull over... Why? So I can flip the record in my trunk. (and lets not forget friction wearing them out)

3. If your using monitors that just got nullified.

people still buy records from the 1800's, rock records from the 1950's, etc are still very popular. Show me a CD from 1990. Know what i mean?

My copy of tubular bells is from 86 or 87 cant remember lost the cover but it is a cd and it plays flawlessly.
