In general ive being aggressive in being more complimentary.

 

 I know some people can't tale a compliment, but oh well. ( I mean I get it I was like that for 25+ yearst Most of the time it just is a tiny thing that costs you nothing and just might make someone's day.

Too true.  I can't take a compliment very well (though I have learned some set phrases for when I do receive them), but I find that giving random compliments to family, friends, and especially strangers, appears to brighten their day and sets the stage for open conversation.  This seems to work exceptionally well, with strangers, when I'm dressed in full on gothic attire and top hat.
