Goth Attire Required Picnic?

Recommended Posts

Hard thing to plan properly for becasue you need I think almost a garuntee that the weather will be good, AND you need people that actually you know have goth clothes and can do picknicks.

Sounds easier than I thought it would be at first.  /ponders.   I guess  only the weather is an issue as long as we don't care how many people show up.    If its just me and like 2 other people I'm cool with that.  But I know many others would be disappointed.

I think that's a neat idea, particularly if it's potluck style. Would be lovely in warmer weather~

Yes, there are a lot of factors involved with planning any kind of event. I do very much love change, variety, and new experiences, as I'm sure others do. Might not hurt to try, and see how it goes? C:

Nope couldn't hurt.  That's why I just said fuck it and jumped into this Greasy-Spoon Gathering thing.   Which You didn't come to... *sniffles*.

I have a decent amount of social phobia but fuck it, I'm not getting any younger.   Plus being social has a ton of benifits that outweigh the problems for the most part.

So....

1.  WHERE would we have it?  Were is a "park" that doesn't have dog shit on the ground  and is well maintained (and is not on the other side of the state from me)

2.  When?

3.  Who?  Who can I count on to do all that shit I can't do myself.  I can't cook to save my life.    I can organize, and I can haul heavy stuff , and bring er.. blankets.

1. Island Lake State Recreation Area or Brighton Lake State Recreation Area. BRA is only a little further than ILRA but has better trails and wile we all know there is NO WAY IN HELL I'M ANTI GUN there is a firing range at ILRA and it can get loud.

2. Depends on how you want to do it. You don't have to pay any fee other than entrance, and in my opinion everyone should pay the $10.00 pass on their license plate anyway. That leaves any unoccupied area free for use including unreserved pavilions.

It costs $100.00 to reserve a pavilion regardless of service but all but one have 20amp.

Oh yeah, Pinckney State Recreation Area has good trails also, and I have spotted carnivorous plants there.

3. I'm a grilling mofo, I can risk bringing a grill within 20 miles of home so that If a location is chosen that does not have a state grill, it can still be done.

Interesting thought.   "Don't forget an umbrella" and could even post something like the above picture in the "what/when/where" topic.

Pavillion is an intresting Idea, I'm a little afraid people wouldn't even bother with the picnic part , but I guess thats not much of an issue.

I'm thinking a huge lead time like,  we'd start advertizing it maybe 6+ months in advance.  I wonder if we could actually break even.  Something that SEEMS free is not going to be free to put together.

An option that my be cheaper is a rustic cabin.

4 of the 5 cabins at Brighton cost $65.00, the other costs $86.00

Island Lake costs $86.00 for a cabin but $60.00 for a pavilion and $90.00 for one with electric. The chances of getting one with electricity are slim to none and the normal ones are iffy also, this is a very popular park because of its location off of I96 and the prices.

Pinckney Rec, you can not get the Gleenbrook yurt on the weekends. Bruin Lake Yurt is $65.00 and the Cabin is too.

Waterloo yurts and cabins are $65.00 - $86.00 no electric. 3 pavilions all $65.00 1 has electric.

Dont even bother with Maybury. Pavilions start at $135.00 and no cabins or yurts.

But concerning cabins and yurts. yurts sleep 5 cabins sleep 4 to 8, each of the parks would have to be contacted to find out their policies on day visitors.

Hrmm this is good info.  /ponders.     Whats a 20amp?   A power plug setup?  How much power is that?  I mean in terms of what shit you can hook up to it.

Can always use Grillin mofos.

This sounds intresting but a much more extensive event.  Not that it can't be more extensive (or maybe two seperate things).      If anyone wants to jump in here and just say "hey, leme run this , I go it" and I can just sort of throw out a few bullet points and drum up business for people to show up.   That'd help me a lot.   Maybe a few some ones.   Its all sort of Vaporware at the moment.

I'd respond / comment in more detail but the next few days are (really shouldn't even be posting right now) are busy/stressful as fuck.  Hopefully I'll be online after friday more extensively.

Don't think I'm not seeing your sig Vater.   Been thinking about it.

In your average house if set up correctly, each room is on its own breaker. bead rooms are typically 15 amp kitchens, dining-rooms and living-rooms are usually 20 amp. Basically think of the max power draw you can accomplish in your kitchen before tripping the breaker. I would say a radio, a couple hotplates, a few crackpots and a coffee maker should be fine.

If I was still employed I'd say "me me me" but the whole no income thing. I know I can chip in though.

I don't like the idea of requiring anything, seems exclusionary.

However I was at World Goth Day two years ago in Lansing, that went over pretty well until they kicked us out of the cemetery for a lack of permit (apparently it's a private cemetery funded with public money or some crap.)  Anyway it was fun up until that point.

Realistically it doesn't cost that much to get a permit for a park.  Alternatively if someone had a large yard that would be better because I don't feel like giving the state any more money than I need to.

Yeah this would be a special case.  Normally I'm with you on all the points there.  But this would be a special one-off thing.   Its kinda like saying "black tie & tails  affair"  ... but black tie and tails is optional.  Defeats the idea.   Not that this is even a serious event yet, right now its vaporware.

Normally everything on DGN is meant to be sort of  "dress up would be nice but feel free to come as you are"   the whole idea here would be that its a special case. With you know, people actually dressed gothy en-masse.   Thats why they have these sorts of (rare) events.

Or like Hellbound were its not "required" to be  BDSM dressed but they make you buy some bullshit dog collar or something so at least it looks like you made an attempt to not just say "fuck the theme".  Thats cute and all.  If you don't like or want to be part of the theme thats not a problem, just don't come.  Normally again, anything is fine,  the whole idea here is that it IS "exclusionary" not in a mean way, just in a "this is a special thing"  way.     Its not a common thing to have anything remotely like this, that's what would make it special.

I don't "like" "exclusionary" stuff either (99% of the time) but this is like you know... a theoretically like say, a  fancy costume ball... but hey... don't worry about wearing a costume, just show up at the ballroom in your ripped up blue jeans and sneakers and "who farted" T shirt..  Kinda kills it.

I don't see why shattering the illusion is a bad thing, or even why the illusion is a good thing.  I much prefer reality.  I view that like going to Ren Fest (or money-grab fest).  Those days are long dead.  Now you just get regulars and people dressed in Star Trek garb because they saw Reno 911 one too many times.

Really dress codes were originally used to keep out undesirables.  The problem becomes then how do you figure out who is undesirable?

Furthermore, who defines what goth is?  Or what type of goth (I.E. Victorian)?  Do we really want to go over that entire argument again?

Sorry, I just like throwing out moral arguments.  It's your party and you're welcome to run it however you chose.

lol I think that would be a great picture. A bunch of goth people at a picnic getting rained on.

So would I need to dress up more Victorian goth like the pic or is any old goth stuff ok? I don't have anything Victorian goth.

I can make deviled eggs, guacamole, cheesy potatoes (if there's a way to keep it warm), desserts. And I can help out with a little bit of the costs as long as I have enough notice.

I'm following this but its just too many flies in the ointment for not much benefit.. That's all sort of really political stuff that is fun to debate, but not really meaningful here.  "What goth is" or at least what "is considered goth attire" is so wide its not funny, but at least in terms of attire, we know its not blue jeans and white sneakers and a baseball cap.  It's a huge tent, but not infinite.

In actuality I couldn't really picture myself ENFORCING such a thing, it would be more of a self-fulfilling thing,  but at least then  that can't just have fun with the rest of us would be at a minimum.

If this was even say 30 years ago the "required" part wouldn't even be a thing.   I remember when I was a little kid (didn't seem to be the clown hate there is today) I went to "a clown party"  and almost EVERYONE was dressed up.  It didn't say on the invitation for everyone to dress up, it was just assumed that you dress up at a clown party.  Nowadays with the widespread no respect for anything mentality, you have to at least say "required" or you'll have way too many kid-rock look-alikes there.

A halloween party that says on the invitations "costume required" is not meant to "keep out undesirables"  at least not directly.  IT does tend to weed out the slackers/ragers that can't just suck it up (whatever "it" is) and just help the theme rather than screw with it.   Its meant to be fun, not a soapbox.  (which I guess is fun for some, but not many... don't get me wrong I own many soap boxes.)
