I'm not discounting what sleep meds are doing for vegetables (the better for me, the less there, are the less I have to eat) but it gets my goat when people start conflating. Comas, locked in and vegetative states only superficially resemble each other during the vegetables sleep, brain scans show they are very different.

We all know how stupid people are when we hear about university educated people claiming they got PTSD from twitter. So what happens when one of these fools that think they know more than a physician because they saw it on TV decides to dose someone?

And yes I saw the disclaimer at the end that should have been beaten into the viewers head throughout.

As much of a proponent of free speech as I am (I want to hear peoples spouting hate speech, it lets me know who to keep an eye on) I think there should be an enormous fine and possible imprisonment for misleading and/or false information in edutainment.

Yea I would have liked the disclaimer to be maybe in the beginning. My main interest is that there is still so much to learn about the brain...it really is fascinating. It further proves that what works for one doesnt necessarily work for all. It's kinda how doctor's will prescribe the newest med that big pharma is pushing and say "this is the best treatment for(..lets say..depression) and there is nothing better"...until the next med is pushed by big pharma...it's all a bunch of bullshit..best med =the biggest kick back..it comes down to whoever has the best sales pitch to these doctor's and has the largest amount of swag for the docs win. Fuck the patient...big pharma was the only industry that survived the recession for a reason.

Interesting / Guarded thoughtful post from The Man  as usual.

Guarded? If there is one thing the "Higher Educated" has taught me it is don't give them room to level false accusations. It allows them close their minds and change the subject to something they think they can win. I'd rather be accused of saying liars should be imprisoned over being told I'm simply anti free speech. Better stop here before I go off on a rant about the social pseudosciences and the bigoted Orwellian politically correct social justice warriors produce by the universities.

I am sorry but I don't understand why this is a issue... If a treatment works for someone and improves their quality of life. Great. If this post was about marijuana waking coma patients I feel like it wouldn't be made an issue.

But that's just my opinion.

My issue isn't with what medication can or cant do for an individual, my issue is with what can happen when a person sees edutainment and decides to risk killing someone because they can't understand that the issue cant be condensed into a simplistic hour long nugget. It is also why everyone should have a living will.

In my case I am a DNR>7 (do not resuscitate past seven minutes) because I don't want to take the chance of living with brain damage. So if I become brain damaged and my wife can't get a doctor to attempt this treatment so she does it on her own and kills me, thats fine by me. But she refuses to be DNR, so it would be immoral for me to ignore a doctor there by risking her life.

I think these overly simplified and conflated and sometime out right lying entertainment medical documentaries.

And you show my one legitimate case of someone losing their life from an overdose (not an allergic reaction) of marijuana and I will be the first person in line shouting that it should not be administered to an individual incapable of consent without physician .

I agree with not wanting to live like that as well. All I am saying is that what is wrong with something that is not initially designed as a traditional purpose in the medical community becoming a new breakthrough for a completely different medical condition entirely? Nobody knows the mysterious interworkings of the brain, which is my motivation for sharing the article.. Plain and simply. I didn't say it was ethical or not and perhaps I should have been clear about my intent. The brain and behavior fascinates me in general.

I didn't know we were talking about any kind of overdosing though.

I mean people can overdose on anything pretty much, marijuana, probably not going to kill you but how about, since we are talking about overdose now, Tylenol. That shit is dangerous as hell and it's in everything.

On another note:

I am kind of interested what is your stance about holistic meds and treatments?  When traditional treatment fails?

Linked to marijuana, Not proven to be caused by marijuana. If a person with cancer dies of a heart attack you can immediately assume the death can be liked to the cancer but that doesn't mean it was the cancer. Then you have the fact that refined cannabinoids are no more marijuana than cocaine is a coca leaf. The coca leaf is as safe as coffee and and purified caffeine can kill you.

If acetaminophen was discovered today it would never become an np drug.

It can kill outright, causes liver damage, Bloody or black, tarry stools, bloody or cloudy urine, fever, pain in the lower back and/or side (severe and/or sharp), pinpoint red spots on the skin, skin rash, hives, or itching, sore throat, sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth, sudden decrease in the amount of urine, unusual bleeding or bruising, unusual tiredness or weakness yellow eyes or skin, diarrhea, increased sweating, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, stomach cramps or pain, swelling, pain, or tenderness in the upper abdomen or stomach area. I hope that is intelligible.

If your into "Linked to's" then we have cancer, ADHD, autism, fatal skin reactions.

I think that every time a drug is prescribed, the recipient should be told X amount of people have taken this drug, X amount have died from it, X amount have had serious complications from it and X amount have had minor complications.

As for holistic, I don't have an issue with it as long as the patient is correctly informed and can consent. And informing with anecdotes doesn't count.

I'm going to be honest, I am against all drug laws regarding what an individual can consume and in the same breath I'm against snake oil and think profiting from an individuals desperation without legitimate evidence isn't just immoral, it is evil.

Yes, acetaminophen no doubt never be approved today.  It's terrible. Everything you said is true there. You had mentioned earlier about some quack just distrubuting a med like ambien without further research besides some hour long program, that I totally am on board without question. Based on what the video showed it was doctor's giving it to patients who were under their care in a controlled environment, qid initially. I know what you are saying now, yea that is illegal but people do dumb shit like that all the time...now I see were you were getting at. I don't know if you have ever been to Corpus Illuminata but this year one of the discussions were about Charlatans and quacks. It was really interesting.

More like I saw edutainment and simply went off on it. My apologies for derailment.

I do think that things should be explored for alternative usage. I vaguely recall an article about a self tanning pill being developed, and one of the people working on it discovered it caused erections (Viagra and the like don't cause them, you still have to be turned on for them to work) then they found out that in some women it actually works on female impotence. So it works physically on men and physiologically on women. Sign my wife up please! <----- That leads to they don't know enough about the effect of psych drugs they are constantly churning out. She took one about 3 years ago that made her happy, it also made her gain lots of weight even with exorcise and a restricted caloric intake, and it screwed with her periods. After she got off the drug she had early onset menopause, feels she is still struggling with her weight and has an increased chance of diabetes.

I have not but it seems like something I would be interested in.

They ever expose electro-detoxification? I almost started ripping people off with it because I was convinced by visuals combined with anecdotal data. Luckily I'm also the kind of person who says "Why should I pay you for that if I can build it cheaper or produce a superior product at the same price?" That lead my to making and testing my own electrodes. My very first test produced sludge that look exactly the same as the live test I witnessed. However there was one major flaw. The test only consisted of the electrode and water in a container, no human body part was in the water to "Pull the toxins from." I became a lot more careful about what is exceptable data after that.

Quack "medical equipment" is still cool though.

Yes! You would probably love Corpus Illiminata than because it is basically an art exhibit of quack and old school medical equipment. You and you're wife, if she's into it should try and go. It's in August. Last year Jill Tracey performed. I'm not sure if you're a fan but she is beautifully haunting and an amazing story teller as well.

I sympathize with what you're wife is dealing with and can relate. I have a similar situation, Insulin resistance and PCOS myself. I have also been on a slew of psych meds before. Aderrall and topamax messed me up so bad. I have not felt the same in awhile.

Here is what kills me though.. And I think you'll appreciate this story. I been a social worker for years, I wanted to change the way we treat mental health consumers. I have frequently worked with a team consisting of a shrink, a therapist, and a nurse. I remember this one job I had where we were having a meeting about a consumer who was gaining weight rapidly and was bordering on diabetes, this consumer was on Serequel. I was the new girl this was my second week and I'm watching this nurse and therapist racking their brain trying to figure out what was wrong.. I sat and waited...it was like they were stumped. I finally said..um, you guys she is on Serequel. They looked at me like and said so, that's not causing it. I than, it took everything in me to not walk out, I said.. "Have you not seen all the class action lawsuits that are out?" The nurse was like.. well, I haven't heard that but I'll look into it. *facepalm*

I just thought to myself,  have you guys not seen any of the new data and new warnings? It says right on the prescription printout about blood sugar and causing diabetes. I ended up getting fired shortly after that but I had already decided that I couldn't associate with incompetent mental health professionals.
