What would you like to see on DGN?

That is a really tough question, I guess what would make it stand out from the "at large" internet as different?

Well for that sort of  "mission direction"  type thing is a big discussion.   At the moment I'm seeing that particular aspect of the board as:

A much less kid friendly, and albeit still strict play nice rules not SO saccharine sweet play nice the way FB is.   A place where you aren't likely to have say, your grandmother read what you post. Your church group isn't going to see it.  Hell maybe even you can vent about your husband in a way FB would never work.  A smaller place, a corner where quasi-like minded off-the-beaten path types lurk, post , occasionally meetup in real life.  Hopefully a place were different sorts of connections , that just would not happen are made, be they ideas or actions or interactions.   A place where there is more balanced even if that balance has its scale tipped toward the light, the dark is still welcome. 

 

The more specific was "how could this thing be easier to use" or  "does something seem to be a pain that could be changed to make it less so." that sort of thing.

I have to say the PC version looks better than the mobile version. However, the mobile version is looking better all of the time. It's also a great option to have.

I'm looking into SOMETHING.  Not exactly sure what.

 

Also I think we should have some sort of notifications for a cell phone that don't require you to be on DGN to see them.  Apparently such a thing is within reach of the software, just no one has actually made it yet. (other than the built in email notifications.. like those are of any use lol)

E-mail works for phone notifications if you have it it linked to g-mail and that linked to your phone.  I shut off e-mail as much as I could though.

I remember the play nice rules here vs. the shitstorm that was the DCC.  Each had their own advantages.  I liked the honesty that was the DCC but some of the trolls on there made it feel like 4chan.  I was (and aren't) very well liked because I was (and am) and opinionated asshole.  Now that DCC is gone and P. C. Principal Failbook is here, it seems like this place has taken on the best traits of each of the two forums.  Although FB came along and killed most of the activity here too it seems :(  That and also the fact that DGN doesn't really have a club night anymore.  If you want to get fresh bodies you have to go out and recruit more (Red Apple doesn't count either.)

I still say this place could use a built in IRC chat though with saved logs we could read.

In the end though people will use whatever they feel most comfortable with.  I think the majority come here for the community rather than any features it may or may not have.

EDIT: You can fix the link to the calendar on the Nightlife forum, or remove it.  It just takes me back to that forum.

Yeah that nightlife calendar has been a sort of emotional decision for me,  I just don't have the time to personally keep it updated, and over the years three separate people said they would do it but never really did.   Probably removing it is the best option. I keep leaving it there flip flopping between fixing it & getting someone (again) to keep it updated or just removing it. 

Red Apple doesn't count as a recruitment place, it counts as a DGN gathering but won't do what a real club night would do.

No DGN "club night" hurts its true.  Even at the best of times there is an attrition rate, and that takes constant promotion and activity online and in real life by at least 1 or 2 of the "key people" on a forum like this.   I got sick several years ago (again) after building DGN up to the 700 posts a day range (FB was a real thing at that point , so it doesn't really scare me that FB is the problem) , and have not been able to get my ass back in gear again.  Once I disappeared , DGN went to shit.   I'm better, but not as better as I need to be.   Also my "life situation" makes fri/saturday near impossible in the short term due to them being the only days I make (maybe) any money.   I've not given up the ghost, just stating a fact there.

I personally am a good promoter for OTHER people's FB stuff , but they *ahem* need to reciprocate. *shakes fist*

DGN does have a built in chat system, just we tried it for a few years on and off, it was never used, and when it was, it was  usually used for things that would have been better posted on the board itself.  Still could try again, problem is its basically even worse than the old DCC in terms of being able to be moderated.  (random aside I owned DCC.com .org .net for  a year after the couldn't keep their shit together, had a big hello kitty picture up for a little while lol)

Every place counts as a recruitment place!  I mean granted if someone goes there, they're probably already there for the DGN night anyway.  However if a friend brings them along there is a chance they're not on the forum and "oh you're not on the forum, you should check it out *hands card* and yet another member shows up.

Anyway i'm pretty sure Failbook and the other social networks hasn't done any of the other smaller online forums any favors (or their users with all the data-mining.)  V.F. has suffered too but that might also because their user-base is made up of a bunch of assholes too (although they might data-mine as well, I don't know.)

Actually I'm pretty sure they do since it connects to enough ad networks.  All this thing connects to is googletagmanager.com, gravatar.com, and wp.com.  The first I have blocked with Ublock Origin, the other two are pretty okay although I do have a bit of paranoia about those tracking you across different sites with the IP address.

Its too bad you couldn't "gamify" the board and throw in automated achievements for doing different things, apart from higher post count, I suppose that kind of software doesn't exist yet.

WTF, how did I miss this.  Yes I do.  And that would be EPIC.   The ones I have I think are the "best" ones we have had, Ill try to remember to bring them on thrusday, if anyone reading this thinks of it, spam me on  Thursday , early with something loud like "HEY GOD DAMNIT BRING THE DGN CARDS!" (and the gathering cards if you care)

Yeah that first part is part of the long , long hard plan.  (ahem.. thats what she said)

 

I don't think anyone except me will ever outpost tron but I give you respect for the attempt sir. 

 

I think you can gamify the board at least mildly (other than just post count, but even post count could be more "gamified") thats a mid term plan, just not sure how to do it just yet.   A complex system of badges for different "actions" is something that already exists as an addon  but DGN is usually broke and  "quality" addons cost  money. Which, I think I WILL get to at some point, its been in the back of my mind for awhile.

To be honest, I have deliberately stayed away from this topic due to the fact that I was rather partial to a previous incarnation of the board, but I have noticed a few tweets that were in the last update that are not present in this version. So I am not sure if what I suggest will even be doable.

 

However, a back to the top side arrow button would make navigation easier. But personally, I would like to see the return of the "DGN Events Calendar" and the "Today's Top 20 Posters" pages.

I don't get it, I see all those things except the return to top button, and with a keyboard you can just hold "page up" and it will scroll you to the top a page at a time.  No it isn't instant but it works.

Although no, there are no percentages, just raw numbers.  Also I only see 5+me (might go to just 5 if I make the top 5, not sure how that will behave when that happens.)

I'd like to see the ability to hit a modifier key + the "home" key to do that though.

Yes, I do believe a bit of background history is due here. 

Originally, the bottom of my Forum front page used to look like this:

So when I saved the page, I would have all the statistics for that particular time of day.

(as some members know I am a statistics junkie).

However, now the bottom of my front page looks like this:

Therefore, in order to get the "Forum Statistics" info, I have to be in an actual thread post.

Therefore, whenever I hosted DGN's monthly BOARD DOMINATION WEEK, I would then use that information to post the daily top 3 (stats would be taken at 11:59pm and posted after 12:00am the following day):

In regards to the "page up" situation, since I do a lot of references to first posts and/or headers when I make welcome pages and the like, I generally find myself opening multiple pages to get to the top of the page(s) quickly, therefore, I thought of a back to the top style side arrow button for faster navigation purposes.

However, I do have a mouse with a "continuous" function which allows me to scroll up or down the page with the flick of my middle finger...guess I was just being lazy...

If Firefox try the Vimperator plugin.  It's designed for people used to text based input.

Again, chat would be cool and I think it's a good time to seriously consider it again.  I feel like Covid isn't going away anytime soon.

I also hate Zoom, and want instant gratification.  If there was a chat, I might hang out logged in more often.  If it was IRC I could just use my WeeChat client.  Or maybe a Mumble server, which is like a free TeamSpeak (which is free but only free as in beer, not free as in freedom.)

 

Also yes I'm aware one of the fears is having content in the chat instead of on the actual forum itself.  Problem is, users will just go elsewhere to some forum that also includes a chat as well.  They've mostly already gone for Failbook and similar services anyway.
