Gothic homemaking

Recommended Posts

I was always a big fan of Voltaire's book Paint it Black which was full of tips for gothic homemaking and other decorating tips.  He now is doing a web series called Gothic Homemaking.  Check it out and share.  Please share if you have any other good resources for tips and tricks.

http://www.trystancraft.com/martha/ is what I remember.

Really it's mostly about color.  If you want to go all cheesy halloweenie then add the coffins, pumpkins, skulls, cob/spider webs, and hearses (not that there is anything wrong with those).  Personally I've grown to like and appreciate more of a "corporate gothic" look.  I find that to be way more creepy than any haunted house motif.  Either that or make it so subtle it's barely noticeable.

Like this, but maybe darken the wallpaper a bit so the patterns aren't as striking.

I am a fan of the of the more creative DIY kind of projects myself.  It is kind of cool to see the creative designs that people come up with using items you wouldn't normally think of.  Multi functional is also one of my interests.  I remember reading an article years ago about a company making furniture that turns into a casket in case of your passing.  Their furniture looked awesome and had that multi functional yet morbid twist to it.

I liked that too, coffee tables, couches, bookshelves.  Helps save on the cost later and doesn't need to look like a coffin but could be a casket shape as well.

My favorite "full couch" caskets are http://coffincouches.com/ but aren't functional as a casket anymore.  They look awesome though.

I've even seen some used as speaker cabinets.

What would really be neat is one with a flat mirror you could use for a lid.  Something like http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50038213/

Actually a friend of mine knew a guy who assembled caskets from China in his garage.  Not sure how his business is going but I thought that was neat.  Most of them looked pretty ornate too.

Honestly though I don't care what happens after I die, because I'll be dead.  I don't need some expensive pretty box, or anything really.  I just don't see the point anymore.  Infinitely way more fun while you're alive.
