The possibility of a change of venue for The Gathering.

Recommended Posts

So, The Red Apple...  It's okay, but it's just okay.  The food is sub-par but edible, the place isn't that clean, and as much as I do like them the service isn't the best sometimes.

There is a Big Boy (Elias Brothers) not too far from there.  Still kinda cheap (not exactly sure how the prices compare) and while they might not be open late (usually they close at 11 from what I remember) we don't really stay that late anymore (and even when we did it was just one or two of us.)

Ram's Horn is possibly even closer (going off memory here) and it's 24 hours, and it's cheap too.  I have one up here I eat at at least twice a week for a scifi gathering up here.

On the other hand the Apple has pizza, and I do like pizza.  It's not the best pizza, but it's pizza.

Anyway, discuss!

On another note I know some people who don't want to drive all that way each week (or even once) but would probably go to something up here.  I was thinking maybe we could have two gatherings and alternate weeks like my scifi group does.  Might be easier on some people then too so they don't have to drive as far.

'Up here' is like Madison Heights/ Roseville.

From Detroit proper it would basicly be (relatively) the same distance.

From were I live it's father than detroit, which is one of the three main reasons I rarely go out (many of 'our type of things') are just to far for me. I started the gathering  for many reasons but one was so I could actually go (realisticly on a regular basis) distance wise.

Distance being a big roadblock for me. I have zero money for anything except core 'stay alive' bills other than what I can come up with from robbing Peter to pay Paul, squeezing blood from turnips and slowly selling off the last of my sentimental value collectables.  (Which I bust my ass to try and do) Although it's getting really old, the cliff is becoming more attractive. 'Just breathing' with no 'having a life' money  isn't enough for me anymore... but anyhow...

Basicly if you look at a map of westland all the ajoining cities are the only cities I would want to change it to if we did change it. I already have trouble getting to even the red apple. (Add to this I often have a weekly hour drive to toledo and it makes any other long drive a near no-go)

Livonia, Taylor, Dearborn Heights, Inkster, Wayne, Garden City, Canton  are the  places that would be fine.

The key reasons for a 'mom and pop' type place is basicly that their rules and such are far more flexible than a more 'corprate' type place would be.

Plus I just like the idea of supporting an actual local business rather than a franchise or a corprate juggernaught, not that is a deal breaker.

When a place closes is an issue if a place closes at say 10 they are trying to shoo you out the door at 9:30. If they close at 11 they are shooing you out the door at 10:30. (Especially if the are corprate)

Also you will get the evil eye much worse for stepping outside to smoke. Also it would be nice if the at least serve beer. For some that is the main draw of even leaving the house.

Assume that people are typically always a nice hour + late (shakes head) so that means the thing starts at like 9 for many people. So open till 11 (which really means open till 10:30) is rough. But not nessisarily a deal breaker either.

Yeah I'm thinking every other week might be easier on you though Troy.  Maybe a few others too.  Maybe we could even get some from Pontiac or Mt. Clemons (way up North.)  Anyway then you only have to make one every other week instead of two reducing your eating out by half for the year.  People who can afford it and want to go out can hit up both still as well.

I wanna hear more about the sci/fi group.

The sci-fi thing is MOWFO (Michigan Wayne Oakland Fandom Organization.) Sometimes we talk about sci-fi stuff but most of the time we're just bullshitting.  Not much else I can say that hasn't already been said.  This next Monday is the Redford meetup which starts at 7 I think.  Doesn't get too many people and I usually skip it.  As it stands I can only do one trip with the car a week that far.  I might even have to cut back since I now have a lifter tick that is getting worse.  Kind of don't want to end up on the side of I-94 again :/
