I've had almost three years of working corrections under my belt now, with half the time split between community corrections and the other portion working in prisons. Seeing articles like this one pop up multiple times a week from all across the country infuriates me beyond words. How hard is it to distinguish between an offender who is full of shit - and you can tell with those types after working this job long enough - and an offender who is actually undergoing a serious, life threatening medical emergency? How hard is it to put the extensive training we get on this to use and to do your job instead of sitting on your ass and just outright dismissing everything just because they are behind bars and you're not? Let alone without even attempting to figure out what exactly is happening? The rest of us working on corrections get a black eye collectively every time a correctional facility fucks up somewhere, whether through neglect or on purpose, and we all are painted as bad guys by association through the badge. This has got to stop. Just because they are behind bars doesn't mean you shouldn't just completely blow them off. And always, always have medical involved. Even more, make sure your medical staff is held to the same standards - investigate to determine what kind of an issue is present, if any, and ACT on it! It doesn't matter how, just act on it just in case the person's life is at risk! Fucking people, I swear!
