Walt Disney World and Others Closing

Disney World will be closed March 16, and stay closed through the end of the month. Disney Cruise Line will also suspend all new departures beginning on Saturday through the end of the month. The hotels at Walt Disney World will remain open, as well as retail and dining complexes until further notices.

 

Orlando's Disney World, Sea World, Disneyland Paris and Disney Cruise lines will shut down temporarily in the wake of growing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. The Universal Orlando Resort announced its theme park closure Thursday as well.

 

Sea World was the latest to announce its closure by providing an update on Twitter Friday. The theme park said it would close from Monday until the end of the month.

"During this time, essential personnel, including animal care experts, will continue to look after the health, safety and nutritional needs of the animals in our care," the statement read. "Our animal rescue and rehabilitation operations will also continue to operate."

Sea World noted it would pay its full-time "ambassadors" while the park is closed.

 

Walt Disney announced the shutdown Thursday in a statement hours after announcing the closure of Disneyland.

 

"In an abundance of caution and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of our theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris Resort," the corporate statement said.

Closures begin at the end of business Sunday and continue through the end of the month.  

 

Cast member employees from each location will get paid during the closure. The hotels and retail complexes at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris will remain open until further notice.  

 

Walt Disney World issued updated policies for theme park ticket holders. Those with annual passes to the park will get an extension based on the number of days the park is closed.

 

Those with dated park tickets or unexpired multiday park tickets with a start day of March 31 or before will get an extension until Dec. 15, and if guests are unable to use their tickets by that date, they can purchase a separate ticket. 

 

The statement said Disney Cruise Line will suspend all departures beginning Saturday through the end of the month. 

Universal Orlando Resort announced its closure Thursday, effective close of business Sunday and potentially lasting through March 31.

"Out of an abundance of caution and to assist with our nation’s preventive efforts, Universal Orlando Resort will temporarily close its theme parks," a statement on the resort's website reads.  "We anticipate remaining closed through the end of March, but will continue to evaluate the situation."

 

Universal Orlando’s hotels and CityWalk will remain open. Universal Studios Hollywood announced closure for the same period Thursday.

 

California's Disneyland announced earlier Thursday it would close Saturday through the end of March.

"While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park," the theme park said in a statement.

 

The Hotels of Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements. Likewise, downtown Disney will remain open.

 

"We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time," the statement said.

The theme park announced Friday that during its closure, it would donate excess food to a food bank.

 

"While closely following food safety guidelines, excess inventory of dairy, fruit, vegetables, packaged goods and banquet meals is being donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, whose mission is to end hunger in Orange County," the statement read.

 

Knott's Berry Farm, also in Orange County, said it would close through the end of the month. So will another large Los Angeles-area attraction, Six Flags Magic Mountain.

Museums and attractions across the country, from the New York City's Met to Washington's Smithsonian and shows on Broadway have closed as well.
