How do you like to do it?

It seems I'm in the minority in that I actually prefer going to the gym alone. I've tried the "workout buddy" thing and it just stresses me out- I'm weird when it comes to exercise, even friendly encouragement sounds like nagging to my ears, and makes me not want to do it.

Anyway, it seems several of us are in the habit (or trying to get in the habit) of exercising regularly. What works for you? For me, elliptical machines are a godsend. They solve the 2 major problems I have with other forms of aerobic activity- there's no jarring impact on my knees/other joints, and much less of a...*ahem* "bounce" factor.

The major issue I have right now is finding a time of day I can go consistently. I can barely get up in time for work as it is, so going early in the morning is OUT for me. It makes the most logical sense to go right after work since the gym is close by, but all I want to do after work is come home and relax for a while. I FEEL most like going around 7-8pm but on nights when I want to go out/hang out with friends, it's easy to skip. Ah well.

My "preferred" method, and most successful, seems to be just plain increasing my daily activity.

I worked for the Michigan DNR for about 3-4 months 6 years ago. By the end of that time, I had dropped about 30-40 lbs, and was eating twice as much to keep up with my improved metabolism.

And there was the period of about 8 months back in the mid 90's when I went dancing every weekend. I dropped from a size 26 down to an 18, and didn't do a lick of any other added "exercise".

I just can't seem to keep myself doing anything else. I have an Orbitrek I got 2 years ago, and the damn thing mostly acts as a coatrack.

I'm looking forward to living in Wyandotte again, where I can bike to the library, walk by the riverside, walk to the post office, etc.

Oh - and I also hate working out with other people. My misery hates company.

And not eating everything on my plate...that last bite might be 200 calories...depending upon what it is

How I miss working out. My membership ran out last Nov and can't afford to renew it.

I lifted heavy weights to bulk up. Cardio was something hard for me to do since it was boring. I didn't have any workout buddies because to me thats a distraction. I would go in, do my thing and leave. Usually lasted about 1.5 hours. I usually went before I go to work since I'm going to be hot and sweaty in that factory any how.

I have bad knees so I altenate the bike and/or yoga and in line skating.

I do weights and crunches and incline situps or crunches.

I got off my lazy ass and went to Punk Fitness last night.....

It was Awsome! Alot of fun, and a great workout. I punked out a few times and had to take a breather because I am so out of shape... :whistling :blushing

Hopefully I can make next week!

I'm not on a really strict or difficult routine but I have a room with some excercise equipment in it (because I can't get out of the house to go to the gym and that during the week) and basically, I do rowing and I have an incline board and some dumbbells. I use this room about 3X/week and do like a half-hour to an hour routine, rowing for 15-30 minutes, doing a couple sets of sit-ups on the incline board and then lifting weights (focusing on different muscle groups each day).

In addition, I often walk on my breaks and or lunch durring the work week for a total of about 3 miles per day (that's an additional 3 miles beyond the amount of walking I get just going about my day). I also play a bit of tennis on Saturdays and or Sundays, once in a while and swim occaisionally.

Not really, rowing is only as difficult as you want to make it; in other words the faster you row the harder it will be. I don't row like hell everytime. Also, with the weights I don't usually do a full 3 or 4 sets, I usually just do 2 and I never do more than 2 excercises per muscle group per night instead of the standard 3-I find if I make things tougher, I just hate going into that room and so I really end up getting less excersice because I can't bring myseld to do it as often. -And walking is not difficult for an able bodied person (the average New Yorker walks 5 miles per day just getting to and from public transportation). -With tennis and swimming I don't really even notice the exercise I'm getting because it's fun to me doing either of those-

Yeah, for sure. I should say that I'm more of learning tennis though-but even learning tennis you get the same amount of excercise...

I just started working out and I find night time is better for me. I hate getting up early and don't want to have to get up any earlier to work out.

I change my routine and am going to stick to 4 days a week for now...about 45 minutes to an hour a day. I change it up with treadmill....crunches...salsa dance workout and freeweights. I really like ondemand on cable because you can check out the fitness channel and there are saved workouts and such you can choose from.

My goal is to shed 30lbs. I am tired of feeling fat and not being in shape. I am hoping I will loose some of my chest as well with the weight!

Wish me luck!

Welcome to the club Kelly!!! :woot:

I need to work on my abs more. Julie's exercises kick my ass.

I've been doing the punk fitness thing for almost a year. Most of my exercise tends to be out doors "doing something" kinda stuff. I ride my bike a lot(20 - 30 miles) , hike, walk etc. I've tried doing the gym workout and I hate it pretty much.

I do better by going to a gym rather than doing something at home. There is the atmosphere of health and fitness.

I like to workout with Gilad on FitTv at 9am. I'm not that good about it though. I'd probably lose twice as much and not have so many cravings if I would just exercise.

I don't have a regular schedule, unfortunately. Some days I run to the WSU gym, lift weights there, then run back (2 miles each way). On occasions when I feel well-rested, I'll go on long-run days and run all around downtown Detroit for about 1:20. The next day my legs are tired, so I'll usually just lift at home.

I want to get back into practicing Tae Kwon Do though. I feel like I should put together a little class of friends sometime if anyone wants to learn it, since I have an instuctor's certificate and all.

I would love a workout partner, but I don't have that luxury for some reason. I like to walk our neighborhood because it's hilly. I love going to the gym. I just started back, and I forgot how good it makes me feel. Wayne doesn't work out much, so I go it alone as a rule.

My exercise consists of walking up to the mailbox (which is like a block away up hill) then walking halfway back to the barn. Changing the water buckets for the sheep and cow (pretty heavy actually). Carrying the feed bag from one pole barn to the chicken coop (about 150ft 50lbs bag) feeding the little buggers then carrying that damn bag back. Then I walk back down the rest of the drive (downhill) to the office and wait for the mail to come and do it again. Every other week I get the buffalo feed from Dexter (30min drive away) 50 50lbs bags and I have to unload them, Skunkboy helps of course. Its not so bad when you are stacking the ones on the ground but as the pile gets up to your shoulders its hard to lift them that high.

But other than that exercise is for lazy people who have nothing better to do. I could be spending that time reading or sleeping.
