Have the "catch all" threads hurt the site? Also, how can we make the site better overall?

Recommended Posts

So, there are a few long standing old threads that exist.  "Now watching,  now eating, now drinking, now etc...."

Say I watched Ozark (which was great) and posted in that thread (as I did.) No one mentioned it and it just gets buried in the other posts.  Can't  really go back and comment on it as it's been buried.

I say have, because there has been a mass exodus.  I suppose we can blame Facebook, Discord, etc... for a part of that.  Maybe a bit on Troy's attitude too (though he has been kind of MIA lately, I hope he's okay.) However, there are other social networks that are out there which are NOT those that are doing fairly well.

I know this tries to be a welcoming community with some debate. (I think I may have helped to push out that right-wing Jesus freak, which I am kinda sorry about, because at least he was trying to be a part of the community.  I just wish he'd have kept his religious views to himself as not everyone believes the same thing he does, but that's not the discussion here and I don't want to get sidetracked on this tangent.) I think this analysis is important because if we ever want to bring the site back, it's important to realize not only why certain users left, but also how we can make the site better.

I get that WE enjoy the site as it is, but it has felt kind of empty for a long time.  I know Troy tried to pivot it toward kind of a kink site in a way.  But we have an adult subforum for that, and if users really want a site dedicated for that they'll just go to FetLife anyway.  He also did the YouTube video thing, which was a bit annoying as most sane people don't really likes a camera shoved in their face.  But I do love and want the best for him.

Also, $55 a month seems excessive.  I get no ads and such, but I feel as if you're constantly getting ripped off.  phpBB is free and has similar features.  For the amount of traffic this place gets the entire site could be hosted on someone's home server and that would work fine (I know because I did it back in the early 2000's on a dual Pentium 3 CPU system running Free/OpenBSD on my friend's T1 connection.)

IDK just spitballing ideas that will probably go nowhere.  I may go through my posts in those threads though and split them off into separate discussions though.

Interestingly, I have answers to the majority of everything in your post, but most of it is behind the scenes upkeep information.  Suggestions have also been made as well as not so nice allegations as to the state of the board.

Regarding the aforementioned individual, however, personally attacked me in a DM regarding dissatisfaction over comments that were made to their specific posts on the board.

I suppose my understanding of something getting "buried" is different from others' understanding.  I don't use Facebook because of how information gets lost (for me).  Here, I just click a number at the top or the bottom of a page and scroll through to whatever it is I'm looking for.  But then again, I use DGN as a living time capsule.  I found out, a while back, that I seem to be the only one who goes back and reads posts from 2004...hey I'm nosey. :book:

I learned that there is a definite vision for this site and I was informed that it will remain that way until otherwise specified.

Personally, the way this site is setup, allowed me to use it as an emotional dumping ground that actually helped make things easier for me to work through a lot of issues.  I call it a publicly, private corner of the internet.

By the way, if there are any posts that are missing, please bring them to my attention as approximately 5 years of posts were archived during the mandatory software/board overhaul of February 2019.

Also, just to make sure I covered everything that I believe is being addressed in the OP, with regards to buried posts, if you go to your profile page, you can access every post you have made on this site.

Go to your profile page:

On the computer click the mauve colored "See my activity" button to the right of your profile image.

on a mobile device, click the mauve colored button directly under your profile image.

Things getting buried I just meant it's hard to respond to a post in a thread that is extremely long.  I'm aware of how to find my own posts.  However if there's a conversation going and someone wants to respond to something earlier in the thread and they forget to quote that post, then that context could theoretically be lost.

As far as missing posts, I can't remember half the things from the past anyway.  If I can remember any posts I'll let you know.  This is why I always say backup everything.

I'd be interested in hearing such allegations, but I'm not on the mod-team and I rarely visit these days anyway.  I just want to see it do well.

I'm glad you banned the guy if he was being out of line.  He didn't seem that bad in public but in private can be another story completely.  No one should treat anyone poorly but especially not you, you're so genuinely nice!

If I am understanding this correctly, the way I respond to a post that I saw but I couldn't remember exactly where I saw it, I do a "topic" or "word" search to look it up.  Or if I remember who wrote it, I do a "member" search.

I'm not sure if that would also be seen as something that is time consuming, but I generally get sucked down the "Rabbit Hole" in most things that I do.

Finding it isn't the hard part, responding to it is.  You have to quote it so context is included, and then hope it doesn't interrupt another conversation going on in the thread (though I suppose that would only be a real issue if the site were more active, but I see it as a possible issue.)

Or maybe I'm just overthinking things per usual.

I think I understand what you're saying.  I do believe you may be overthinking it a bit.

If you look at how the conversations run in the "What are you thinking" thread, quoting someone in the midst of posting does not interrupt the flow of the ongoing postings.

Generally, if you see a post that is not quoted, it is understood that they are simply responding to the thread title or OP.

However, when it's a dedicated post like this, it is automatically assumed that comments in this thread will have something to do in response to the opening post.

Back when I first joined, there was a minimum of 20 people on the board at any given time and quoting posts kept confusion down with regards to who were in conversations with each other.  And if someone else had a comment to what was being posted, they just multi-quoted everyone they wanted to respond to.

Honestly, that was how I determined who knew each other before I posted to any threads or entered into any quoted conversations.

Some conversations that were noted as :offtopic:branched off into their own thread so the discussion could go more in-depth.
