cool

Oh yeah, I'd describe it as kind of a cam-portal for WinAmp -- except you can't actually hear anything, you just get a text list of the songs most recently listened to. It's a neat idea, but there was this thing that you could code into yor website that let people viewing your site see the most recently played song in WinAmp -- which, of course, doesn't exist anymore. This is kinda like that, except I'm not seeing anything that'll let you code something into your site.

This sounds interesting... but I'm confused.

What is this for the somewhat technically challenged?

OK, you join the site.

After joining the site, you download a plug-in for the music player you use most often on your computer and configure it to your settings. (I use WinAmp, always have -- and if you use it, I can talk you through the process of configuring the plug-in.)

After that, it logs what you listen to onto a webpage so you can display your tastes for others. You page will look something like this:

a friend of mine in Denver has had her account for over a month -- here's what her page looks like:

It can take a while for anything to show up after you first get the plug-in configured, but I think it just takes a while for the site's servers to recognise your computer the first time. It took the site almost forty-five minutes to recognise my computer, so if you don't see anything right away, don't worry!

I like how it gives you a kind of vouyeristic look into what other people listen to. And I can go "wow, all of these people listen to crappy tunes" a lot. :grin

That sounds VERY cool. I share your curiosity. It's a bit of both voyeurism AND exhibitionism I could get into. :wink

The one concern I have, however, is the fact that it's reading MY computer. How secure is this as far as the rest of my hard drive?

Well, I've been reading the forums and the admins who are pretty active on there have turned down some feature suggestions because it can allow spam and spyware to seep through -- and those things are never cool. It all looks like it *just* reads the music player and nothing else.
