Honestly I think he'd have been less damned if he did.  If they took the capital it would have been a massive blow to Russian morale.  Everyone who hates Putin would come out of the woodwork.  There are a lot of pissed off families who had children die in the war and that's just for starters.

 

There are many who swallow the propaganda whole though, either because they are dumb or they are well taken care of by the government so they have a vested interest.

 

Also it would have been way easier on us.  I mean what would they do, nuke themselves?

He's old but he's strong, still maybe he'll die soon, that'd be nice.  Then maybe for once they could have a real election.
