SlavicGoth
I'm wondering who here goes to city club. I've seen the regular faces here but I don't know if anyone here goes regularly. I would love to meet up and hang out
TronRP
I actually used to go about twice a month. The only thing is I would go and dance from the time I got there until they closed, so I don't think I made for a good hangout person...
Scary Guy
I used to go regularly. Then the "goth night" turned into something else. It's still called that but there's more of a mix. Jay knows how to play the good tracks and it annoys me that half the time he doesn't. Also screw paying $10 to just hang out in the front room, or $20 for both. I mean people are willing to pay it so it works, so I'll go if I know a lot of people are going. Also the manager doesn't like me much because I annoy him telling him what's wrong with his club that actually needs to be improved upon. To his credit he used to take my suggestions but these days... I guess I was banned once for a bit which I never knew about, possibly because I annoyed him that much but they said someone complained about some stupid bullshit or something, I don't even care. They also don't book me anymore either. The last time was the memorial for Charles English and that was because they knew I'd do it for free as it was a benefit for his family. I did the most Charles set I could think of as tribute. Maybe the kids complained because I actually have taste or something. I think the real reason I stopped going so much was because of Noelle S. who goes/went there a lot and I didn't feel like torturing myself being in the same room as her. There are other bars where I'm treated with more respect that I'd rather exist at. Hey, remember when there was a word of the night for free admission? Pepridge farm remembers. Also there was no goth night because it was the only night so by default every night was goth night? I remember that too. I've gone for years trying to recapture the magic it held on my youth. Still better than Small's though by far. Also every goth bar in the city seems to be ultra left almost to the point of communism and my politics don't exactly align 100% because I like guns, money, and think Biden is a senile idiot (not that Trump isn't far worse.) Yeah, overshare but it's that kinda morning. But if you say you're going I'll try to show up. Hell we could have DGN nights again there like the old days. I think the only reason we stopped is Troy wanted to get some special deal for DGN members and Joe was not having it.
know_buddy_kares
Most of anyone usually goes to Small's now. That's what I gather from Facebook at least. Maybe one day I'll venture out again but I'm really don't have the going out lifestyle right now
n0Mad
I was a regular from 1997-2010. But, like most things, it changed to stay relevant to the younger crowd. I hardly even recognize the place anymore. Nowadays if I want to see the regular crowd and listen to the regular music, I'll go to Small's or Villains. I always looked at him and said "one day that'll be me," and slowly I'm getting there (well all except the lawyer part.) Eventually I'd like my own bar (it's my pipe-dream, never ends) and one of the reasons is that I'll have a reason to go then if I own the joint. Might make it a private social club so I can invite all my friends and tell the haters to fuck off. We need more and better events on this side of the river in the meantime. I just heard about another one over there that I'll post about soon. 11 hours ago, n0Mad said: and listen to the regular music Villain's has a great playlist, and they do throw in some old school tracks. Small's I can guess the playlist though. Many places tend to focus on what is popular and don't attempt to throw out new or obscure tracks that are also great. Played stump the DJ last night and I won with Though perhaps it's too rock 'n' roll for the crowd? I do know that it'd go over great in Ohio, and Joe at City always said he wanted more rock thrown in to cater to those people. But again you can't please everyone and it's foolish to try, so many aim for the lowest common denominator and try to please as many as you can. I think this is wrong, it isn't a job though you're making money. We get into this because we like doing it, playing the songs we like for the friends who go. Elektrosonik did a great thing for the scene by actually mixing forcing everyone to step up their game a bit. Many DJs though seem like they just push play and barely try to blend them, even when the software makes it easy for them. Mark my words AI will replace us all. It'll adjust the volume and temperature automatically based on the number of WiFi signals. It'll get everyone's favorites off of Spotify or whatever other music streaming service and also filter in new/obscure songs it knows we will like based on that. It'll get the average heart rate off of the smart watches to know whether it needs to play faster or slow it down. The only reason people will book human DJs is that they promote and have friends who will bring people. Those DJs will look down on AI like live bands look down on them. Also and we've been saying this for 20 years, fuck rockstar DJs.
gwen
yea! I remember him! pudgy short guy stood next to me in a suit once physically hideous creature of the night broke out into dance moves! I was hanging out with one of the bouncers at the time he said that 'hideous creature' has a law degree! no shit. dayum!... I too, had a dream. lol. a venue/practice space/ recording studio. ✨️ I think I would be good at finding local acts, recording them, coaching them...mixing them...and would have it all under one roof! the thing about detroit is; rep. rock city mo town. many artists made it from here. two, there is very affordable buildings with low tax. so I wouldn't have to gouge the bands. I saw the practice spaces in the Russell complex. they have thick wooden doors with padlocks and no to low heat. I wanted to do better on that. I guess he was less creepy if he wasn't actively trying to hit on you. There are lots of guys in the scene who are fine to be around as long as you have a penis. As far as buildings go, the Russell got raided a few times for grow-ops when they were highly illegal still and not just federally like it is now. I think there was a whole floor dedicated to it. How the owners never got in trouble IDK, but that's less of a worry these days.

Ive been told im old because im 27 i don't understand how that makes any sense Everything is relative. 30 is old to a 16 year old. 50 is old to a 30 year old. 80 is old to everyone except for that super rare 100+ year old. There's a lot of ageism out there and different generations hating on eachother. It's all bullshit and we enjoy the same things, so I have no clue why we can't all get along. Oh wait I know why, kids don't want to be reminded that one day we're going to die, and old people don't want to be reminded that kids are fucking retarded. I've always known that maturity has nothing to do with age, but at this point I kind of really would rather avoid anyone under 25. People tend to not be worth a shit until life kicks them in the teeth a few times, and even then it's iffy.

Scary Guy
4 hours ago, Slogo said: I've considered it. The past couple of times I went felt like a funeral for the place Jay needs to do more oldschool nights for us oldtimers. But funnily enough, the last time I DJ'ed there was for Charles English's memorial/wake thing. That was a melancholy bittersweet event and probably when the club really changed. Charles did a great mix of new and old school. I even showed him a couple things on the new equipment he got when he switched from CDs to digital. I can't really find anyone with a bad thing to say about the guy. After he passed a majority of the oldschool stopped being filtered in as much, along with a major reason for many to go. They also raised all the prices which I get because of inflation and the door charge is how the DJs get paid, but it still feels like a slap in the face to pay $10 only to have the backroom shut down and blocked off, to listen to new shit I don't care about, and to see less people that I know. They also FINALLY fixed the soda guns, but I've never liked those since I don't trust the ice from the ice machine. So instead of a can of coke my only option is bottled water, and with the "new" news of how much plastic you're ingesting with one of those the only real option is to pregame in the parking lot and go out to eat after, except it's post Covid and everything is closed (not because of Covid but because "no one wants to work anymore" when yeah they do, just not for slave wages after inflation fucked everything. But hey at least gas is cheap because it's an election year. Almost any other event is a better option to me, including sitting at home just listening to whatever I want. I only really started going because they had a better sound system anyway, and that's very much no longer the case (the light show is still better though, but I don't care.)
