EMERGENCY - Jon got fired

Recommended Posts

Jon got fired today. His psycho supervisor went off on him about - believe me - bullshit, and basically told Jon to get out.

I'll spare the long sob story. And trust me - there has been much sobbing today.

We spoke with my dad in Taylor, Michigan. He planted the seed that at least Jon can come live with him - he asked if Jon can get a job up there.

So, we need a job for Jon. If anyone knows of anything, please let me know.

Jon is a GED Graduate, worked 5 years for this company, and has experience building mechanical things like revolving doors, turnstiles, etc.

He learns quickly, is strong and can move heavy weights. He is also good with small engines such as repairing lawn mowers, 2-stroke engines (chainsaws, hedge trimmers, gas yard equipment of the like).

If we can get Jon a job, at least he can take the motorcycle up there and live with my parents while I stay down here and pack everything up, sell off what I can and get things in order to move myself up there shortly.

Thanks everybody.

OHHHHH FC i so wish i could help, but i just dont know any connections for jobs in those fields. If he can build houses or has done carpentary I do know some one who needs help badly, dependable help with some experience to be considered (the guy is tired of "messing around" with people, his words not mine) and well i think you two are the depenadable type. Any how most of the jobs they have been doing are located around 25 mile and Vandyke, might be a long drive, other wise they do stuff in macomb county. Just a thought if it seems like something He might be able to do Message me and i will tell Mr. L to talk with his cousin about it.

I will pray for you both.

Hmm... can he operate machines?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Jon operating machines (he can operate many shop machines, including -to some extent- injection molding machines, as well as about any carpentry machines):

Drive a front end loader?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Jon operating a front end loader for the Michigan DNR (We have a letter of reference from them, too)

jonfel.jpg

Dig a hole?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

He must have dug 100 holes for the split rail fence we put in at the DNR, as well as for tree transplants, etc.

Can he repair 1940 tractors?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

He says he can definitely work on them. Get one running? Not sure. He brought a couple riding lawn mowers back to life, as well as dozens of push mowers, and countless other small-engine pieces of equipment.

If yes... I maybe able to help.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

If you can, we would be greatful. Thanks.

Jon can do whatever he is shown. He has a strong back & is used to physical labor. He has to work with measurements, cutting, etc at the job he was just doing, though mostly with metal.

He can carry lumber, drive a nail, use hand tools like drills, saws, etc. He can do basic measurements. He'll work his ass off while others sit back and relax.

He has done some woodworking as a hobby, but never for pay, except some palattes & boxes.

Thanks for any inquiries.

That'll depend on how much of an offer my dad is really willing to make right now. I think if we call him back and tell him, "x wants to offer Jon a job and it's waiting for him" he'll say "send Jon up and he can live here while you settle things back in NC". It'd be a trip that would take a few days - Jon will be coming up on just his motorcycle. So it'll mean at least one overnight stay.

Thanks so much for checking on that, Harmony. Even if nothing comes through, it's a grand offer of help.

By the way, any clue what this pays? Jon makes $14.00 an hour right now. We'll take what we can get, but we'll have to plan based on what he can expect to make.

Okay only speaking from past experience D' has paid his guys from $10 an hour to $15 an hour as a start pay it has allways depended on experience. I have seen the fresh out of high school guys make $10 an hour and i have seen him pay an older guy who was not experienced but picked up very quickly $15 an hour. I never understood how he actually bases his pay scale but then i am not the one writting hte check either.

I will tell brain to see if he can tickle the money clip loose a bit. :wink

Oh just so ya know it probally wont be untill after 8 or so when he can call D', so it might be tommorow morning befor i can let you know either way.

Oh and if you get any other solid offers in the mean time please take em, i will not upset or anything and D' can allways place an add in the paper, so please dont feel obligated in any way.

O.k. Update time.

Things may be working out better than we could have hoped. This may be a blessing in disguise.

First off, we put the minivan up on about 4-5 local yard sale groups as well as Craigslist for Raleigh. We paid $650 for it, but even in fair condition with some mechanical problems, Kelly Blue Book values it at $3,250.00. I put $2,000 obo on it, and was 100% honest about all issues it has.

We took a nap today, and I woke up and read messages and found one waiting from a woman who wants to buy it for the full $2,000 asking price. We've been back and forth a few times, and she is very serious. She has a mechanic in the family who can take care of the power steering & radiator problems, so she's not concerned about that. And she hasn't even seen a picture of it yet.

Granted, we're not DEPENDING on this. But it really does appear to be a done deal. She will be giving us $1,500 this Friday, and the other $500 next Friday.

In the meantime, we have a riding lawn mower, a boat on a trailer, and some other lawn equipment we can sell that should net us about $500. And the house is PACKED with stuff we can sell off and make at least another $500, probably much more. So we should have the $3000 we always were shooting for in 2 weeks time.

Granted, we have to give up the minivan. But I'm not going to cry about it. No way.

On the job front - we will take any offers anyone here comes up with seriously. Jon is willing to give just about anything a try. There may be some distance problems, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Additionally, we checked out the want ads in the downriver paper online. There is a cleaning job available that pays $12-$15 an hour, and I already called them. They said fax a resume. And we will be doing so as soon as we can pull one together for him (got one done, just not with the current job on it.) So whether it's through that or through the super-kind folks here on DGN who have answered my plea, it looks like there could very well be a job waiting for Jon sometime soon.

We talked again with my father. He gave us the o.k. for Jon to move up there by himself for a while if he has to, thank goodness. We figured he would, especially since we're not trying to move ALL of us - me, Jon AND all the furries - in with him. Just Jon long enough for him to earn a few paychecks and find a place for us to rent. If this van deal comes through, we'll have all the money we need to move in, if we can find someone to rent to us.

We're taking today to recover from the initial blow (though I've been working my head off all morning doing all these "for sale" postings, job searches, talking to family, etc.). But starting tomorrow, we'll be working on packing everything we intend to keep, selling things out front (no time for eBay sales - just have to sell off everything I've got at a yard sale), and cleaning up the house so it's in better condition than we found it.

SO much to do. But I have to remember - Jon is home to do it with me!!! What a weird feeling...

Thanks everybody for prayers, assists, words of encouragement. This may be a blessing in disguise - IF everything falls into place correctly.

Guest Game of Chance

Sorry, wish there was something I could do...I think there are others on the board that could you better than I can in the industries that he'd be looking in. Good luck.

Thanks, all, for the well-wishes and shoulder pats.

We went out to pick up some packing boxes and came home to two more e-mails about the minivan.

It looks like we'll have a sale by week's end. That $2,000 will probably go straight up to my dad to hold onto to put a down payment on an apartment/flat/house for us to rent.

In the meantime, tomorrow will be a huge day of taking pictures of "big" things to sell, like the boat with trailer we just picked up off Freecyle, a riding lawn mower, some other lawn equipment, my Orbitrek, a beautiful coffee table that is a big, green bearcub on his back holding glass table top with his paws (that one hurts), the kitchen table, etc.

That stuff should get us close to or at the $3,000 total mark. Once all that stuff is taken care of, next comes packing up the entire house of what isn't immediately necessary. Once that's done, we'll have everything we can sell together for a yard sale this Saturday.

We'll go from there. Sometime while this is all going on, we'll update Jon's resume and start faxing it out.

SO much to do. So much to do...
