Brenda Starrr
My family knows that I'm not your typical person. I don't wear "normal" haircolors, makeup, or clothes. Yet, in spite of knowing this, I still tend to shock them. They seem to think that they "know" what to expect from me, yet they really don't. This year, I'm sporting a hot red faux hawk (even though I could wear it down, I'm probably not), my huge tattoo (a work in progress, which they've never seen before), and my usual all black. How does your family feel about your look? Do you go balls to the wall with your look, just to see how they'll react?
Fierce Critter
I've never been about shock value with my family, so I've never done anything just to get a rise out of them. My New Wave in the 80's, Punk & goth in the 90's and now has always been about how I like to see myself, not how I like others to see me. They've always actually enjoyed my quirky style. Generally, I dress in such a way that I showcase my personal style, yet am at least somewhat appropriate for the situation. Goth/punk aren't the only aspects of my style, so I have plenty of wardrobe & make-up & hairstyle techniques to go around. This past week, for instance, was the husband's company Christmas party. (I don't have family down here, so it's the closest example I've got.) I wore a long, deep blue cut velvet shirt over a very short black velvet stretch skirt, black tights, shin-high black crushed velvet boots with about 2-1/2" heels, diamond drop earrings, styled hair & red lipstick. I'd wear something similar to a family function if it called for "dress-up". I've done unusual outfits for past family holiday gatherings. In the height of 80's new-wave, for Christmas, I had on a long black skirt, hot pink ankle socks, black pumps, a hot pink sweatshirt, a multi-neon-colored scarf, multi-neon-colored plastic bangle bracelets, and probably some kind of neon hairthing. That was very unusual to the family, but very accepted. The only thing they questioned was the pairing of ankle socks with pumps. The only time I've ever dressed somewhat inappropriately was one Easter when I wore this beautiful, long black lace dress, and accessorized it with rose pink Converse High-tops with black lace laces in them. My dad was so disappointed in my choice of shoes, and looking back, I'm not real happy with my decision there, either. Sometimes, it's not about ME ME ME, it's about some kind of group, be it family, a church, whatever. I've just learned to broaden my fashion & style sense so I have more choices without feeling stylistically stifled. Makes for more fun & variety anyway, you know? Brenda Starrr
Trust me, I don't shock them on purpose. It just happens. I'm just me, and some of them can't handle that.

Head Wreck
i still live with my folks and they occasionaly take it upon themselves to grab me some new shirts etc. which is fine and good (i get very little time to do shopping) but they buy mainstream stuff which tbh i wouldnt wear, thier good for work though... they cant unsersand my dress sense, it is either tailored suits (slightly goth cut, think later period malice mizeresque) or gothic-meteler (depending on mood and personality currently residing). they honestly belive i buy from honour porn, when infact i buy clothes, (good stores are far and few between, and my ex mrs used to buy her clubwear there, i find the stuff there can withstand more abuse then normal gear bought of high street, i dunno how many pairs of PVC trousers i go through a month). they have also nicknamed me the male amelda marcos of Burry Port, due to having multitudes of boots (mostly assorted types of combat boots. i'm fussy on correct footwear, i don wanna break my leg again)

Hermine
Great link. Love the sale page. And they have some very interesting...uh...nevermind, nothing to see here. As for holiday look, I wear lots of burgandy velvet, so that goes over just fine. I tend to be pretty understated a lot of the time & I have a lot of corpgoth type stuff. 'Course, my folks have always been quite laid back about my personal style and they're used to it. My mom always thought it was fun. Her main qualm is that she thinks I should be saving more money and spending less on clothes. Doesn't think much of the corsets but she definitely feels it's up to me. After all, I turned 18 ten years ago last Sunday. I don't wear those to holiday parties, though. Why go to the trouble of getting all dressed up in that particular look when I'm not going to a club? Oh, and my mom does have a vickygoth side to her, though she doesn't call it that; our tastes overlap in places. For Thanksgiving, she lent me this awesome bell-sleeved vicky/faerie goth outfit of hers in burgandy and mauve b/c the dress I had planned to wear didn't quite fit (it was actually a bit big) & my other option was in the wash.
