First time you went to City Club

Sigh...

T'was the winter of 1988, that's right 'I said '88.  I was the guest of my friend Mike, who's older brother DJed at City back in the 80's,  I was awestruck, as anyone would be, getting patted down at the door, already tipsy from drinking two 40's, the place was filled with cigarette smoke (I'm not a smoker, so it was particularly nast to me at the time) and the entire place was abuzz and elbow to elbow with black clad freaks.  And I loved it.  I could hear the thumping of music as we headed to the DJ booth to meet my friend Mike's older brother, the DJ.  We bumped into him as we got there and it wasn't his time to spin yet, so he dragged us out onto the dancefloor just as the chorus intro to "This Corrosion" by the Sisters Of Mercy was blaring.  I was dumbfounded as that sonic chorus blared, strobe lights pierced the heavilly fogged air (They used to try and kill you with the smoke machines back in the day) above the dancefloor which was punctuated with the "floating skeletons" which  you see in the bar area today. As I stumbled into the dancefloor, at least two hundred people packed the dancefloor to dance to, and sing along with the music.  The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, and Bauhaus, and Killing Joke were all staples that night...

I've never been the same.  And I like it that way.

It was 1996... I was 17.I had been hearing about this "really cool place" and came down to go with (of all people) some kids I hung out with at Sci-Fi cons. I was immediately struck with some pretty heavy apprehension and almost left, but I went on in, had a great time and have been a CC regula ever since.

Stories, adventures, epic journeys, whatnot.  Post 'em here.

The first night I went to City Club was in Winter 1995 - I believe it was January; I was 20. I was dating an asshole named Gene Warrick at the time, and it wasn't pretty. Friends Paul & Hip Hop Tracy were also along for the ride (I drove), and I had a blast, until Gene started fucking everything up. We broke up soon after, and I started going to CC religiously; both because I loved the music & people, but also because I knew Gene had no way to get there, and I wouldn't have to worry about running into him. Many sweaty nights, with many hottie goth boys followed. Not to mention the many friendships that were also formed at the City Club.

Less than a year ago. My friend Xavier took me, and I will never be the same. We went to Elysium (<1/2 a mile from CC) before City Club, which was a mistake. It was a $20 cover with a strict dress code. We had to go find a shoe store open at 9:00 at night and ended up going all the way back to the Meijers at 13 & John R to find shoes for me that matched the dress code. Extra $40 out of my pocket that I was NOT planning on spending that night. Left for CC around 12:30. My first thoughts were: DUDE THIS IS F***ING AWESOME! Especially since I've always had a penchant for goth girls. I think I remember starting to go light-headed from such a high concentration of beautifully dressed (or rather underdressed) people.

I was 17 and had a fake ID. It was a looonnng time ago (1990). They played Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion" back then too. Some things just don't change.

its hard to believe that CC has been around since the late 80's....although considering the state of disrepair its no suprise

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

CORRECTION, since the Early 80's. Even I had to wait to get in legally...sort of. Heh heh... :whistling

it was july of 99... i was 19 and my friend steph asked me to go with her to royal oak for the showing of the blair witch project... (it was before i knew it was fake). well when didn't make it to the movie so instead we walked around the flea market they had going on and we had a blast... she then asked me to go with her to city club and i was game. From the moment i entered the place i was in total awe of it. I met a guy that night who eventually became my daughter's father and the rest as they say is history. I used to go every weekend both nights until i got pregnant and i quit going after i was about 5 months along. then i quit for about two years and when a few times a year... but for the past year i've been going every other weekend.

(shhh) I used to be a sysop on a couple of dial up b.b.s.'s. and to think what kids would do now a days if the fastest connection was a 9600 baud dial-up like way back when. Even worse, we thought THAT was fast (cringing). So I know what you mean by feeling old.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think there's oen of those packed away in my storage unit somewhere among my old school tech toys. I have a massive box of those really bad giant cel phones that came in the bags with the big attenas too. Why i've kept all the junk i've no clue, it's not like it can be used or anything it's all so ancient

I hear 'ya. Been going since '91. Not so much anymore.

Some of the youngin's I talk to now don't believe me when I tell them about the old music. "Soundgarden?, Nirvana?, Rage Against the Machine? No way!"

Wasn't there a tarot reader with a table set up by the door?

I also seem to remember someone with a large Boa Constrictor / Python, or it could just have been the drugs talking.

I'm glad some people here have been there longer than me. It helps to know I'm not the only old one here.
