The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: Review

Recommended Posts

Fort a cinematic student this film is a must.

I find it simply amazing that a silent from the 20's can teach so much.

The fact that this film was so art oriented yet maintained a typical story line continuity was simply inspired.

After watching it I even considers what little dialog there was to be unnecessary.

I give it 5 bravo's

Now as an individual with sore modern sensibilities...

THIS MOVIE SUCKED.

The dialogue was hard to read I ended up making William Shatner jabs.

Slashing this movie to peaces is just to easy.

I can only say three good things about it

The sets where cool.

The sleepwalker was goth

And what can I expect from a simpler time and people.

1 bravo for the sets and the sleepwalker

4 middle fingers for the rest.

I quite enjoyed the movie.. infact i bought it from best buy on dvd for like 5 bucks... only problem is that i onyl watched it once, and with my adult add, i didnt pay attention to much, and do to my lack of short term memoery i dont remember much from it except for some parts... so my solution is that i need to watch it again

i love this movie.

i own it.

simpler time and people??? WTF? i doubt it.  the inter-war period in europe was anything but simple and the people were no simpler than we are today.

cease and desist with yer historical prejudices! :laughing

I'm merely referencing the fact that Film For Entertainment beyond novelty, was relatively new (15 20 years?) ergo people didn't expect as much.

Don't forget I gave two opinions especially about dialogue.

It was one of the few outlets that people had for dealing with the War (WW1) remember this is long before psychology/psichiratry was available, and there were no "pills" that could fix things. It was a way to experience the horror of the war (someone else pulling the strings... sending you off to kill etc.) without offending the socital norms (sorry for bad spelling).

There have been a few good books written on the subject... (look up Weimar culture, or history of berlin during the 20s and you will find lots of good stuff... I had a grad course on Weimar German culture and politics)

well, you are right in that it was certainly a way of dealing with things. in fact, we still do the same today. but psychology and psychoanalytic studies were certainly there (freud? he was well published before the war). and im not so sure pills have helped fix anything. :laughing

the films produced in this era, IMO, are remarkably fully developed for such a then young medium. metropolis, nosferatu, calagari, the spiders, the last laugh--and so on. they are representative of their time and place and reflect a great deal of the current psychology, but it wasnt all just a reaction to the war, it was also an expirement in a new form of art and expression.

many of these films were indeed controversial too. some found them highly offensive. the nazis purged a great deal of weimar films (one of the reasons so few remain today) and even during the weimar era censorship was a major issue.
