I'm not really so much into industrail-I was into to it a bit more, years ago...I like the philosophy of it as an movement better than I like a lot of the participating artists. I still dig early Ministry but you couldn't call their first recordings industrail. Beyond them, they only Industrail I've been able to listen to lately is Einstürzende Neubauten. I voted for them.

a little disappointed that Pigface didn't make the cut.  So now its a toss-up between Ministry and Puppy.  Tossing the coin right now...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

it was between those two for me also. i went with ministry just because i know more of their stuff.

Icon Of Coil

Covenant

Apoptygma Berzerk

Razed In Black

Lords Of Acid

THESE ARE CHOICES?

Icon of Coil is EBM, if you want industrial, try that other sideproject of Andy LaPlegua called Combichrist. Lesser known but more true to industrial. Should still not be a choice as it's way too new.

Covenant is also EBM and at most pseudo industrial. Hell even KMFDM and Ministry are sudo industrial.

APOP? NO! I won't even bother to explain that one.

Razed in Black does a ton of good covers and uses some awesome synths, but just because you like them doesn't make them industrial. If anything they are EBM or some new form of synthpop (can't be futurepop though cause they're too old for that).

Lords of Acid, maybe for one track AND ONLY ONE TRACK which would be that "sit on my face" song off of the album Lust (track 05 I think?). They still have no right to be in the list though.

No where through these did I see DAF or SPK or Killing Joke or Fad Gadget. OK Killing Joke is sudo industrial too but they should have still gotten mention. I was ecstatic to see Throbbing Gristle and Einstürzende Neubauten in a few of the lists.

To me true industrial involves power tools and experemental music with a good stompy crunchy beat that borders on techno and falls short of gabber.

I'm not saying any of the bands listed aren't good, they just aren't industrial.

I was going to make a final list but I figured I'd remain silent. Those bands making the final list pushed me over the edge.

I played true industrial one night at the club, no one got it.

http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html under trance, go studdy. Not everything on there is accurate but I agree on that.

Hey I told people to add to there own polls...

And I have no idea what "real industrial" is... only what I have absorbed... feel free to make an additional pole and I will amend mine.

I think everybody has there own definition as to what Industrial is and What Goth is... and I don't want to go there again... Nobody owns the definitions to either genre as far as I am conserned.

Then the genres simply don't exist. I could call Body Count hair metal, but it's not, it is rap. I could call a lot of bands a lot of styles that they just aren't. Sure it might have elements of that style in it, but it doesn't ring true.

Example, goth. With my definition of goth (anything that is dark natured) it's more of an overgenre than a subgenre since music in any genre can be goth. However proper traditional goth music would be more like Switchblade Symphony, Wench, Gothica, Faith & the Muse, etc...

Industrial music to me involves power tools or at least has to sound like it's being made with power tools. Harsh beats and violant rythems that just make you want to kill and destroy. Modern industrial to me is Tumor, Suicide Commando, and the like. Reminds me of the post apocolyptic cyberpunk fantasy world of the 1992 erra (movies that is). I also lied, Ministry and KMFDM are industrial in sound, but not as industrial as SPK or DAF. Still it made good fuel for my argument.

Fear Factory is industrial, Static-X is industrial, hell even parts of Orgy and Spineshank are industrial. But it's mainstream industrial and thats a grey area.

I would agree that many of these bands don't fit my definition either, but that is all it is... my definition.... I think I understand your disagreement... if you would like to make a poll of what is industrial to you... I would be happy to amend this "Final Poll.

I'm not saying anything bad about Lords of Acid, cause I do like them. In fact, I've seen them twice. Once with My Life with the TKK and another time with DJ Assault.

Having said that, do they really belong in a Best Industrial Band poll??

Yeah.... and I do understand where Scary Guy is comming from... but I was trying to ask what "most people" think of industrial.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well if you're going with that line of thinking then KMFDM wins, hand down. I think they're the most well known industrial band by far and just about everyone owns the symbols album. However this method is flawed because most people are stupid (I don't mean that in a bad way, ok lets go with misinformed).

Like most people would say Stephen King's best work is IT, and I don't know, I don't read King and have only seen his movies. But thats the most well known of his works and there could be better ones but everyone knows about that book.

First people need to learn about what Industrial is, then learn about the different elements of it where they get their sounds from, what the lyrical content means (even if you can't understand what is being said).

You know what sucks, you never hear KMFDM or Pitchshifter on the radio except as backing music for spoken advertisements on 101.1 and 88.7 (or at least when I listened 3 years ago they were still using them).

1st, i have no clue 'what' industrial is, nor do i care for techincal terms and distictions. catagories are often arbitrary to the person(s) creating them and quite often lack in sufficent reasonings for someone who doesnt agree.

that said, i was torn between KMFDM, skinny puppy and :wumpscut:.

KMFDM is krazy-mad-kool and one of the 1st 'industrial' bands i encountered. they have alot going for them.

i love :wumpscut: one of the main reasons i didnt go with him is that i havent liked the latest offerings so well. :(

i had to go skinny puppy, ultimately, because they have rocked my world consistantly for a long time. theres nothing i dont like from them. i can wear out on KMFDM, but not puppy. and ive stated my concerns about :W: directions above.

so puppy squeaks out ahead of KMFDM, though all the choices are great!

Like I said... One mans industrial is another mans EBM... Some people think NIN is a metal band... Like I said there is no correct definition of industrial, no one owns the terms to these genres.... so yeah, just tried to find the middle ground.... feel free to think I am wrong.

Thanks... I mean that.... It is hard to reason with somebody who has discovered the "truth" of a subject, and will not entertain another point of view. It is kind of like arguing religion with an evangelical Christian, who "knows" the "truth" about God and the universe etc...
