Brenda Starrr
Wow, Drew. I just read this to my husband. He's not a very excitable person (unless I've nagged the shit out of him), but he was REALLY shocked. I never would have known.
The_Dark
I heard on the radio today that they picked up a magnitude 2.5 after shock. there will be more... and some of them could be far away. 5 tectonic plates meet there. Whole islands moved. One of the plates moved 98 feet. Yes, 98 feet. How much stress does that cause on the other side of the plate? How much settling along the faults? This could get magnitudes worse in some areas. There are no early warning systems in the Indian ocean. Had there been, many people would not have died. The scale of this shocks me to the core, but I can't help but be in awe of the Power that is Earth.
Marblez
From CNN.com: http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/01/0...uake/index.html Aid began arriving Saturday in Indonesia, hardest hit by tsunamis and flooding triggered by the 9.0 earthquake off the island of Sumatra. So far, the total death toll has reached more than 141,000, with nearly 80,000 deaths reported in Indonesia alone.
