Medea
Dude! Those of you who know me (or have payed any attention to my drunken ramblings) may remember that I have stated I want to get a d20 tatooed on my ankle. I LOOOOOOOOOVE the table top. But the thing is, you have to be good at created situations and stories and characters, and being able to think on your feet if you are going to DM. You should definitely have at least SOME player experience before you hop right into DM, GM, Storyteller, whatever. You need to be able to do all the above, as well as know all the rules and stuff, the basic guidelines for moving about within the world. Different systems and worlds have different rules. I'm finding that, while I seem to have an aptitude for the created situations and characters bit, I have more than enough trouble with getting the characters really motivated, and with thinking on my feet, to make up for it. It's definitely a challenge.
Troy Spiral (13)
If your going to DM current D&D you probably should break down and buy the core books if you dont have them already (im not sure how long ago you mean when you referenced having played D&D in the past): http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20040801x The latest edition is very well done. You can get that stuff from ebay for cheaper, but once you have it, basicly you'll have it for a long time. The cost-per-days-of-entertainment ratio is very high regardless of how you buy it. Im not sure how well it will go if your (in essense) starting from scratch and being the DM right off the bat. You might want to be a player, with some more experienced players first. Although if your players are all fairly "new" to the game , and are patient, i guess its a non issue. D & D can be addictive. Need to take it with a grain of salt and not overdo it and end up having it consume your free time totally. I've been looking for an excuse to start playing D&D again (or maybe Vampire, but i've got a bit of the "powergamer" mentality after years of playing the evil known as EverQuest and Vampire doesnt play into that as well :blushing ). The new books are very seductive. But, i cant justify it right now with what limited free time i have after all my other stuff is factored in. My health issues probably wouldnt fit to well with it either. (or maybe im just afraid of getting addicted to it again hah) Random side note: I play MTG also (and have , on and off been playng Pewter Crack (Warhammer) on and off for at leat 10 years if not longer) Having said that, MTG, D&D and WH are all distict hobbies. P&P Roleplaying, Tabletop miniatures wargaming and CCGs are all strikingly different types of games. I've sworn off one type of game in favor of the other in the past, many times. I think i've somewhat made peace with them all at this point. I feel comparing one to the other is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. Its a common comparison, but an unfair one , i think after many years of making the same comparisions myself hah. :blushing :laughing
Killer_Bunnie
Troy, we still haven't been to pandamonium, and since soo many people from here go there, or at least play the games, I want to call Jason and see if we can fill the back room one day, that would be such a great day! I was with those stinky guys, you grow fond of them. it's the only place that I know people, and the only place I've seen that has other confrontation players. oooh, edidted because now I remember going to Riw all the time back when Chuck (boomstick007) had serious issues loosing to the stiner kid at mechwarrior or whatever it was that made him need to play that day. This game is much fun. that looks fun, where did you find it? I've been stuck with a few dead games so far, I dont need to add another <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If you mean where to find a copy, the Internet (but support your local game store if you can!) BGG is good for finding out about new games in general. As far as table-top RPGs... I prefer board and card games, personally. D&D games require quite the commitment (1.5 years for one Campaign, Shade?!?) of time and coordinating others. Many very good games can be played in 1-2 hours. There are also more epic games if you have the time -- including many that play off the D&D medieval dungeon crawl theme so you can get that fantasy fix without the huge time commitment. Of course, if you have the imagination and dedicated group of gamers, D&D can be quite entertaining.
cptdeath
igot this friend who was part of the creative team that developed the format in like 1976. he tells me he was responsable for wrighting some of the first pre-constructed adventures. he would do things as the dm that were just scary. like the use of props that affected the game play. like take a bone from a steak or a ring and put it on the table and if he cought someone stiking there finger in it then the charcature would have a ring of binding on them all the sudden or something. or a crucafix that had rules attached they didn't know about. if me or you picked it up upside down and it was dark outside then our charcature would be possesed by an npc spirit that would change the quest entirley. like the spirit of a gnome mage you would make saving throws for control of your charcature all the time. Darque Knight
Sometimes when I look at the boxes and boxes of D&D stuff I have I miss playing... but I sure don't miss DMing. A few things for all you gamers out there: 1) man fuc lord of the rings they need to make magic the gathering movies for like ten years straight. They seem to be on that path... The new set that comes out in october has a Preview Trailer. You can find the link on this page...Ravnica : City of Guilds BTW They even got Michael Dorn to do the voiceover to add to the geek factor :grin 2) For those of you north of the center of the universe that seems to be Royal Oak another good gaming store to check out is BLUE DRAGON. They have a large selection of gaming supplies and space to play. 3) If you're addicted to cardboard crack like me (or you want to be) you might want to check out the latest game from Wizards of the Coast... HECATOMB It's kinda like Magic but aimed at an older audience... It is by far the gothiest card game out there ( until the Nightmare Before Christmas game comes out... no I am NOT kidding about that). Well that's enough info for now... Have fun all you fellow gamer geeks

Not sure i have the energy to try and organize a "group" thing. Barely have the energy to logon to DGN and drag myself out of the house a few times a week. (health problems) =( iwas a founder at mgc in westland back when kelton was pumping beanie babies and trading videogames. before they moved the store before neutral ground before pandamonium. i used to play magic at the bailey center at boe's gatheringused to hustle at the card shows at gibralter man. i have no cards now but i miss em. underworld dreams. invoke prejudice. devine intervention. the thrulls and lord of the pit. man fuc lord of the rings they need to make magic the gathering movies for like ten years straight. but yeah i would try to go to pandamonium for a day just to chill and soak in the atmosphere. good to get back to my roots. my nerd roots were i'm from you know. =( =) I hung out with Kelton like 24/7 for like a year. Long story. I too was going to Neutral Ground back in the day, and played at the Bailey Center before there even was a Neutral Ground - Detroit. MTG could seriously use some sort of TV Show and/or movie tie-in. Would help bring more people to the game. Same for warhammer. A friend of mine that went to Gencon and played it there gave me a good review of it, but other than that i've heard mostly all negative reviews. =( I like the idea of it. Hopefully the nay-sayers are wrong. ER... wait a minute actually i hope they are right, i've got enough geek addictions already! If more games sucked, it would be easier to escape the addiction. detroitrequiem
Im getting a Vampire the Requiem game started, not table top but live action to be played all around Metro Detroit. It would include parties, treasure hunts of sorts, political factions of the vampires cospiring with one another. I wanted to base it off the Kindred tv series. Yes I am a geek but it's lots of fun and I need a break from reality anyways. Any takers?
Angel
Yes, you should dooo it. D&D is amazing, even though I hate tabletop games. To add a bit on gamestores: RIW: boo! Pandemonium: yay! no, this has nothing to do with the fact that Pande used to spondor me for M:tG Pro Tour Q's... Actually, these days I like Blue Dragon a lot. Check DK's post two up for a link to them. The play area is nicer and cleaner than Pande's, it seems. Plus, they've got comps where you can rent LAN time, should the urge to play WoW overcome you. Also, in Clawson, Warp 9 on 14 and Main has some stuff. No major play area, but it has some cards/comics/stuff that people may find interesting. Check it out.. -John
