Is anyone coming out this Friday to the Lab?

Recommended Posts

The price is $3 but it's free before 10pm also $1.50 drinks from the well before 11pm so get there early

If the night picks up and a lot of regular people come out all the time, I will do a requiem membership thing were people who are regular members get in free. It's just the matter of getting people out again to the Lab. The Lab has such a bad stigma attached to it. There is also a little private game going on as well. See me at the booth for more info on that. That will be something a little more discrete and will played all over the metro Detroit area. So come out everyone and lets party!

Not everyone believes in the bad stigma. I don't think the place deserves all the bad comments that people make about it. I guess some people think the place isn't "good enough" for them, but hey some of us do appreciate what the place has to offer.

If people want to be fault finding, they can find things to complain about anyplace.

It all depends on a person's attitude, and if they are grateful for things or not.

Ok, I'll shut up now.

I hear you. When I posted on the CC forum, there was a lot of negative stuff. People think Im competing with CC. I just want to do a fun goth night for people:) I want something a little different and I hope you ghouls enjoy. I bought a fog machine, the management is trying to clean and fix it up a bit, some more lights, etc. We need to get it repainted too, creepy and all, any takers? Cant wait till Friday, gonna be fun

I keep offering my help in fixing/cleaning up the place so that it meets peoples standards better, but so far nobody has taken me up on my offer. -shrug- If people tell me what they want me to do, I'll do it.

K, soap box time (yet again)

I used to love lab and city long long ago. Then I realised that msot of the people there (especailly the owner of the building) could care less about you. They really just want your money. Which would be fine if they would actually use some of it to fix the place up a bit.

If anyone is interested walk down the stairs to lab and at the bottom look over to the left hand side. There should be a hole there. One night I actually made it onto the other side of that wall and saw a pool of standing sewage. After I left I got pretty sick (as did my friend whom I went exploring with heh). I only wish I'd have brought a camera and flashlight to show the photos to the city inspector. Not that that would have done any good anyhow because I'm sure the city inspector is getting paid off (I guess it's cheaper than actually fixing the place).

IMO the building should be condemned and people should have higher standards for clubs.

This doesn't mean I hope the night doesn't succeed. Even though I do technicly work for the competition and all I hope the night goes well for him. I still plan on attending as well (assuming I can get on the list, since I'm not going to give higgins more money to burn).

I have other reasons for hating the building, but I will get into those another time.

I remember when you posted this the first time. Very disturbing.

I truly wish the owner could be forced to fix it up (and CLEAN it up) and I think that is the only way it will ever happen, is if they are forced into it.

I will likely continue to go though for one reason only - it's got the biggest concentration of the people I adore that I've ever found anywhere. If not for that, I'd likely give it up.

I'd suggest turning them in, but 1) would it do any good or would they still continue to pay off whoever and 2) I'd really hate to see the place shut down completely.

Thats everyone's reason for not shutting it down, and the other reason I hate it. It's like the central pillar for the gothic/industrial community in the detroit area and it sucks. The only way I could see it getting fixed up is if Industry came back and gave them some real competition.

If we (or any other nice club) had the capacity, dancefloor size, and late hours that they have. We would CRUSH them, like a nut.

I'll help with the repairs, I said I would before, and Ron has my number, have him call Becca on a day that he's there and I can start anytime. I used to fix up city till I was let go. pm me or see me tonite at mephistos and I'll give you my number, I told you how hard it is to get ahold of Ron some days.

All that matters to me is that I can get people together in a central location and spin. If its at another bar, Im there it doesnt matter. Ron simply offered me the opportunity and no one else has. The place is a shit hole no doubt, but it's all I got until someone else comes a long and says Robert can you organize something at this place. I just know that from the people I knew in the past and the people Ive spoken with on here recently that there are a lot of really nice people that I would like to be friends with and bring together with similar interests. The old Lab scene was a lot of fun, good people. So I hope its fun for you guys and let me know if theres anything else I can do.

yeah ive seen the hole scarey guy mentions, i thought it was pretty funny myself. i wanted to go in there and explore. i love exploring scarey abandoned buildings. its fun! i also have many reasons why i probably *should* hate the lab, but i love it nevertheless. is that irrational ? definitely.

luckily ive never had any illusions that any club owners or djs or patrons actually care about me. why would they? of course all the place wants is my money. and all i want is a big space where i can dance to some music. the mutually parasitic relationship works great.

the lab is just one of those things that people have very strong emotions about, either they love it or they hate it. nobody feels neutral about that place. it has a strong personality, a life of its own. the lab is a live creature in the basement of the ramada.

as far as standards go, everyone looks for different things in clubs, in human beings, in life.... i just like things scruffy, flawed, and rough around the edges. just like me. wow, im so punk rock. anyway, compared to some places ive lived ,visited, etc in my life, the lab isnt so bad. people who have access to "fancier" things get used to higher standards i guess. im pretty easy to please. which makes life pleasant and easy i'd say. lucky me.

if people dont like the place, for whatever reason/s, dont go. places i hate, i dont go. problem solved. nobody should go places they hate, just to be seen as "supportive". who cares? theres no point in torturing oneself. enjoy yourself. go to places you like. do what you like. theres places/ music nights a-plenty in SE michigan to cater to whatever it is one is looking for.

But it's a good thing to support the scene. If the scene doesn't get support it dies out. I used to love the labyrinth and go every week when it was open on Wednesdays with TimTiki spinning. I liked his work then and I like it now, and am happy that I get the oppertunity to spin along side him.

As far as standards go, I've been to some dives sure. Whisky in the Jar is a little hole in the wall but I like it (went with some coworkers on occasion from Mephisto's). To each their own definately but at our club we try to keep it clean and working properly. We listen to user input and actually do care about our customers, and not just about not getting sued like they do.

I have offered my help to Higgins for both Lab and LCC. Still no call and I'd be willing to do it free of charge too. I've even done it free of charge with Chris the three days before new years eve 04-05. I even brought in my DJ rig to use becuase Studio 54 (what used to be the second level labyrinth bar/entrance) didn't have one. I put up ceeling tiles, changed lightbulbs, and squeegeed the flooded floor. My only payment (which wasn't even really payment) was the cheap discounted audio equipment I bought off of Chris that he was trying to offload before moving out of the state to Chicago.

That building would be so lovely if they'd just renovate a little bit but the fact that they don't care about it is what makes me the most angry, and sad. FYI Ron has my number as well. Though I think since I work for the competiton he won't call. At least I tried I guess.

Scary Guy,

I will have regular djs for the night and would like to include you, cypher, and others as well. Ron says he's paying me by whoever comes through the door. Whatever money I will make, I will be giving it to the djs or to help make the Lab something a little more atmospheric (new furniture, lights, etc) If we have enough people that will come down regularly, we should be able to convince Ron to make better changes. He basically said he justs wants to make money of course. So lets all work together and make this into something. I dont want to step on anyones toes. If the CC management wont help us, we'll go somewhere else. How does that sound?

I have never been to the Lab, nor have I ever been able to figure out where it is.

How do you find it in relation to the door you go into to go upstairs to City Club?

And, for the very ignorant, is the Lab open all the time now? What are the hours and what's the draw? It has no dancefloor, right? Details, please. Jon and I might consider checking it out someday.

the door to the lab is on the cass side of the building. from the city club door, walk around the front of the hotel, turn the corner around the diner, and halfway down the building [between the diner and the parking lot] will be the door to the lab.

dancefloor it surely has. nowhere near as big as the dancefloor at CC, but its usually way less crowded. so it feels much bigger to me. the dancefloor is the biggest draw for me actually, since the only reason i go to clubs is for dancing. and i need lots of space, so the lab makes me happy in terms of dancefloor.

hope that helps with at least some of your questions.
