Hard one for me to answer, 'cause I'm getting too technical about it.

Technically, out of all those people, Robert Smith would be my favorite. But that's because I'm a much bigger Cure fan(atic) than S&TB fan.

But if we're talking within the confines of S&TB, then I'd probably have to go with whomever was most responsible for their sound. My research into the background isn't very deep. What I do know is they originally wanted to base their sound on their bottom section - bass & drums. So that tells me I should lean towards Severin & Budgie.

And considering the sound Severin created in collaboration with Robert Smith on "The Glove" is very Siouxsie-ish, that further would lead me toward Severin being my favorite percentage-wise.

But would S&TB be S&TB WITHOUT Siouxsie?

I make some things way, way too complicated...

You bring up an excellent point, SG.

I find that I probably value the frontperson over all else in a band. But I have to throw in a wrench of sorts to that point - writing.

I WAS a huge Journey fan (STOP LAUGHING), but for the most part, the stuff they started doing after certain key members left - none of which were the frontperson - SUCKED. This was, in a large part, due to a change in who did the writing. Things shifted in a large way from guitar to keys - and that ruined them in my opinion.

With S&TB, I haven't done my research, and I don't know who does most of their writing. But I suspect a large part of the musical part comes from Severin.

With "The Glove", the Robert Smith/Severin side project, the songs I like most on the album are more S&TB-like than anything else. And throw in the singer they got (forget her name and the CD isn't within reach) who sounds VERY similar to Siouxsie and, well, you see the frontperson isn't necessarily as important where their sound is at issue.

I know I'm probably the only lame-o who watched the INXS show that just ended this past Tuesday. But I was a decent INXS fan, and hard-pressed to see how they could replace Michael Hutchence. The guy they decided on wasn't my favorite, and I very much disliked what he did with non-INXS songs.

But on the finale, he performed a brand-new INXS song with them, and damned if it didn't work for me.

But this is an example of a band where the frontperson was never the main writer. The main writer is STILL alive and still running the show, so the band could still work for me.

Dunno. Thinking I need to find time to go see who actually wrote my favorite S&TB songs to properly answer this one.

Absolutely not.

Arguement over right there.  You can replace instruments and thsoe that play them.  But each voice is unique.  I site the new Journey, Judas Priest, The Misfits, and AC/DC as good examples.

Very true. To me when a band loses it's vocalist, it's no longer the same band and they shouldn't go by that name any more. It's not the same. Most of the time I won't listen to a band that I like who loses their vocalist and replaces them with another.

IMO a band that loses any major member should change their name because then it's not the same "band of musicians". Maybe if they replace a non crutial member that makes almost no decisions and isn't really anything major. But when most of the bandis dead or gone just change the name and stop living off of the credability of the old band.

But they won't do that and I just answered my own question. No one wants to book "some unknown band" for a major venue. They want someone with name recognition that will draw a crowd.
