I listen to Fox News on XM a lot when I am driving in the truck. In fact, a lot of news programs have been talking about the next price hike because of the hurricane (which is utter bull and just an excuse to get even more money). Now they are talking about the prices going well over $4 a gallon. I expect $4 or around that here, and the extreme prices in California as they usually are.

I was fed up with filling the tank up with expensive gas so I went to Meijer today and bought two 6 gal containers (which were on sale for $5.96 mind you, when the 2.5 gal sizes were the same price), and filled them up with gas at Meijer in Taylor for $2.42 a gal. I also topped out the tank in the car as well as my usual 2.5 gal gas container.

Does anyone else ever do this? If prices are going to go THAT high, filling up with 20 gallons is going to cost $80. I just bought 20 gallons for $46, just to be prepared.

Jon is getting his company vehicle this week. That will save us over 300 miles per week. Just in time - our weekly budget for gas is $45. We've been spending over $100 since prices went up. It's the main reason our finances have been fucked.

When the gas crisis hit in the 70's, people were doing just what you describe, Reaper. Hoarding. I remember John Denver in particular getting flack for it.

But I say, more power to you. If you have the means to prepare ahead, why not? I might not like paying the high price, but kudos for those who are able to cut their losses a bit.

Yeah, they said today that the southeastern Texas area has already run out of gas. The refineries are already shut down and probably will be for 4-5 days IF THERE IS NO DAMAGE. I am certainly glad I didn't go the owner/operator route in trucking. Jus to fuel up a truck with two 140 gal tanks is expensive. I always fill up at 1/4 tank and it still takes up the maximum amount allowed to pay, which is $500 a fillup.

:doh grab yer ankles or store up lots of gas now. Guess that the two week gouging that was created in the wake from Katrina will repeat with Rita. For no good reason, other than to fuck the consumers in the ass again...dry. There has been no restoration of petroleum services from the Gulf areas affected by Katrina, yey, the price of gas rose & then dropped almost $1.00 per gallon. Here they come again. Dirty fuckers!!!

'Coarse I am spoiled and have like 2 1/2 yrs college ed. I won't drive more than a half hour for a job.

It would not be worth it to me.

I don't make that much honestly.......

I take out gas prices and if it isn't worth it I swallow my pride and do what the fuck ever to survive, as we are not living naturally anyway

It's a nice sentiment; some of us don't have the luxury of that trust. Luckily, though, I have a friend in my neighborhood, and a couple more coming soon.

Much of the price hike is due to the fact that though we have shit loads of crude oil.. we dont have the plants to process it into gasoline. We have not built a new refinary since the early 70s and have shut amny down do to them being so old and in need of repair.

There is no oil shortage but there is a gasoline and diesal fuel shortage. Now we are shutting down even more refinerys becuse of the storm.. Supply and Demand people.... Learn it, understand it... and the next time the hippys stop Exxon from building a refinary.. bitch about it.

Alright, I got home from working at Sterling Dragon last night and with Miss Rita hitting the lower part of the US, and now being a Category 5, I had some nasty news laid upon me.

If the weather continues like this, gas prices hit the big $5 by year's end.

HOLD IT!!

I'm a freaking college student who feels damned lucky that State Farm enables her to pay her insurance monthly, for cheap, as opposed to every 6 months where I need help. However, where I'm at, one job isnt even enough to cover that $70 for insurance. I had fairly decent hours during the summer, although my hours were still a joke, at least I brought home enough to not only fill my tank, but also place some aside for State Farm to withdraw from my account.

Gas prices now? F*CK that!! My teeny paychecks almst barely fill my tank now, and on top of that, it takes me about a half hour to get to school and about 20 minutes to get to work.

I need another job that pays.

Unfortunately, in Midland, nobody hires. And practically, if you're in college, they lose even more interest in hiring.

I, personally, and f*cking sick and f*cking tired of driving down Saginaw road and looking at $2.72 gas prices, for ONE gallon of UNLEADED gas. Now, Admiral Gas Station has been quite faithful to me, where they always seem to be cheaper than the rest. I drove by last night and there was a long line of people waiting to get gas for 2.58 a gallon. I wonder how that is, because with only $31 dollars (( on hand )) to my name right now, that gas price is a bit of a relief. But that's it. My father owes me gas money for not only refusing to let ME work on Saturday due to a wedding, but also because gas prices suck right now.

(( This is just another reason why I do commissions. When I'm not being lazy, they've provided me some extra money for that little nudge, enabling me to pay my insurance last month ))

So, this whole thing is just a crock. I understand about the Hurricanes, but I think that our idiotic President could've delved into reserves somewhere to get some freaking oil.

But no, he's a greedy bastard who likes swimming in green.

And in my position, I cant boycott gasoline, my jobs and school are too far away. There IS the bus system that takes people up to Delta, but I dont know the times. =_=;;

Forgive me for being blunt, but I tend to find the idea of "hippies" being able to stop the large oil companies, particularly within the present administration, from building new refineries a risible concept, at best.

With W. in charge, I don't think it would matter if the entire civilized world were screaming at him not to build more refineries, he'd do it if it meant profit.

Here's a link that could help some of you depending on where you live. Its a link that shows the cheapest and most expensive prices in various cities.

http://www.detroitgasprices.com/

I wish I had some form of transportation other than vehicles like a bike, bus, or ride with someone else. But I live in South Lyon. Luckily I only drive 37 miles to Taylor for work instead of where I used to live which was Manchester.

Be blunt all you want. While your at it, let your hatred of the current administration blind you to the last 30 years. The oil companys have tried again and again to build new refinerys.. again and again they are sued by Enviromentalists to stop them.

I've wondered about this, Dark, but didn't want to ask for fear of appearing to attack you.

But curiosity is getting the best of me.

You live in an absolutely GORGEOUS part of the state. If it weren't for the fact that my husband and I have realized how much suburban life suits us, we'd want to live in your area for sure.

But how would you feel about refineries if they wanted to build one in the woods you take walks in right now? Would you honestly feel the same way, be welcoming and say, "by all means - if it means cheaper gas, cut 'em down boys!"

Would you really?

But wouldn't "the many" be much better served by switching to alternative fuels, instead of relying on oil, which we know in the long run will be gone and is already increasing exponentially in cost?

Don't get me wrong - as things stand, I can't afford a Prius. Should the gov't switch (as I fantastically suggest in my run for President) to such vehicles, they'd have to provide me one for me to afford to "save the earth".

But I can't help but believe that's a better way to go.

I whole heartedly beleive we need to move away from fossil fuels, we just lack the technology to do it right now. Hybrid engines are only just now getting to a place where they can start replacing normal vehicles but... big but.. not even close to effciant enough to completly replace the whole fleet of vehicles in the country. Just think of the truckers... long haul truckers could not use a hybrid, they are stuck with diesil. Hydrogen fuel cells are slowly coming to the for.. but.. we cant efficiently make the cells yet. It takes more energy to make a fuel cell than we can currently get out of them. In the mean time we need to get a bigger gap between supply and demand on the fossil fuels. We have a steady and sufficient supply of crude oil, but we cant process it into usable fuel very fast. The "buffer" between supply and demand on finished fossil fuels is narrow and gets narrower ever year as demand goes up.

A good place to start is learning to use what we have to it's fullest potential. Stop wasting so much fuel. Then, up our production of proccessed fuels. All the while fully funding research into better ways to create hydrogen fuel and better hybrid engines.
