Kung Pow - Enter the Fist

Recommended Posts

We picked up a box of VHS curbside shopping last night. This movie was in there, and though I looked at the box and thought to myself, "oooh boy, this is going to be suck-a-roonie" we went ahead and watched it.

I'll reserve comment for now. I wan to know what other's think. But I will say I went to IMDB to see what people had to say about it and was surprised to see so many people say they liked it.

And possibly even MORE shocked to see a sequel is in the works as we speak...

Oh, by the way:

O.k. I'll cop to the fact that I thought it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. And this is Mrs. "Brain Candy is alright by me".

Jon and I both wanted to stop watching it - but then (slight scene spoiler here - skip this paragraph if you don't want one of the better jokes spoiled for you)..................... the woman proceeded to roll the baby down the rest of the hill. That was probably the best moment in the film for me.

The things that bothered me: lame jokes. Lots and lots of lame jokes. To me, if you have to explain the joke (the stomach plug, the squeaky shoes) then the joke isn't funny or can't work on it's own. And the tongue thing? Especially the really, really weak "final momentous scene" with it just had me saying, "come on... is that REALLY the best you could think of?"

I kept picturing Steve Oedekerk at a table, writing the script and cracking himself up, and I wanted to say, "bet that worked REAL good on paper, didn't it? Well, it doesn't work on film."

But there were moments I thought were good. I thought the use of the original martial arts film was an inspired idea. I thought it worked very well quite often. And I can get Jon to crack up just by going "weee-oooo weee-ooo" :wink.

Overall, though, I just thought it was 1 star out of 5.
