Shade Everdark
Heisted from BoingBoing.net I've used this as the punchline for jokes very often in the past, in reference to stupid people (you know, the Darwin award-winner types). But now, the Indiana state legislature is actually proposing that we proscribe fertilization assistance to those who are married, and in heterosexual relationships (of course). According to the article, it will become a class B misdemeanor. How will someone who has "illegally" gotten pregnant be punished? I don't imagine much jail time would be involved for a misdemeanor, but the question still stands. I have to hope that this is just some kook and that there are more intelligent minds at work in Indiana.
saechalyn
Right...because marriage is inherently always positive and could only ever serve to make a situation better. Of course ridiculous laws like this get drafted all the time and go nowhere. But it's still scary to think that there are people who think like that. Msterbeau
That would be funny... if it wasn't so pathetically sad. Why do people think they legisilate this kinda stuff????????

Homicidalheathen
This is scary. Many of you may not know.......my husband did not father my kids. Their real >Cough< father lied to me Oh surprise there. He was doing drugs and had 5 girl friends and no car or job when I threw his ring back at him and my friend (his roomie) kicked him out. Ok yah I was a sucker but he was good at lying. REAL good. Quite a charmer too.......should have used his talent for sales or something......I heard he ended up homeless for awhile. But we made these two, smart.......well adjusted........good natured and beautiful girls. He is only part responsible for the beautiful part. My husband did the rest. My husband was steril when I met him by the way. Good thing I was pregnant....... I never would have had kids otherwise and then they would not be here and that would be a shame. I didn't like that they want to assign kids SS numbers right away now........they (big brother is watching!) Are so afraid of people having kids they cannot keep tabs on. Like we are secretly breeding an army or somthing. Or they just want to push their moral standing beliefs in our faces. I was hoping the term 'bastard child' would go away.....I guess never. EvilEve
:erm ok... well, this certainly takes me by some kind of suprise. :blink more along the lines of "WHAT THE F@*K ARE THEY THINKING??!!!" even 'IF' this ... law (yeah, ok buddy!) is passed, it'll be broken within a matter of minutes! it was only a matter of time before someone came up with something like this. ... having read that article has made me dumber. i award them no points, and may some kind of higher power shock the hell out of them with sharp pointy sticks. Msterbeau
I agree with the spirit of this legislation, the over population of this world is disgusting. It has nothing to do with population control... It only restricts the rights of potential surrogate parents and similar methods of reproduction/parenting. But. I still sucks... the can pick whatever statistics they want, I know very good single parents. I know very good gay parents... and this legislation denies them the right to have children by these methods.
Homicidalheathen
Agreed. IN china they limit kids 1 to 2 per person.....reguardless of marital status. I do believe if people don't stop being selfish and having too many kids our nation will have to adopt something similar. I only had one pregnancy myself........not my fault I was so fertile that month. I used to be one of those zero population nuts. It has nothing to do with population control... It only restricts the rights of potential surrogate parents and similar methods of reproduction/parenting. But. Paper Hearts
Marriage in America, is nothing more than a way of giving religious types (specifically Christians) an economic advantage over others, it's nothing more than a vehicle of oppression. Besides being used to oppress gays and insure a "Christian" majority via sponsorship of more frequent reproduction through tax break rewards for those who marry and have children, It's also used against those to whom such a piece of paper (marriage) means nothing, whether from the church or the court, because they have no faith in either, and so remain single. Who is to say that a relationship of 1 month between two "single" types, is worth less than a marriage of 20 years? Who is to say that a child of unwed parents are worth less? Who is to say that people on there own don't deserve the same opportunities to buy a home, start their lives as people who are married? Personally, I think all financial benefits of marriage should be ripped away or that all single types should receive the same help. -That's what free and fair is. Belief, is just that. That is, one 'believes', rather than knows. Therefore, isn't it arrogant and ridiculous that anyone would force their beliefs on anyone else? I mean, you don't know for sure that what you believe is real, but you're going to try to make other people follow you anyway? As if a god would need your help? Please explain to me how this works. If there is a such thing as a god, nobody knows or knows of this god better than anyone else. Anyone who thinks differently is daft and anyone who tries to promote their conviction over anyone else's is ignorant. Isn't it laughable that people of such open bigotry and intolerance as these Calvinist style Christians think that freedom is one of the institutions of their lives and their nation...and esoecially in the face of things like this? It's no wonder Europe didn't want such prejudiced and restrictive peoples and they had to come here and form their own society. I'd have preferred to keep humanism, too. The_Dark
Well, thats fucked up. I could agree with the law if it required people to show they had the means to support the baby. Far to many babys being born to people whohave not the means to properly raise the child.
Paper Hearts
If this law had been in effect in 1910, in neighboring Illinois, we'd maybe not have had our 40th president, Ronald Reagan. And that's not necessarily a good thing, because you never know who we'd have gotten instead of him and instead of those presidents we've had as a result of him, George Bush (his vice president) and George W Bush (the son of his vice president). Reagan was an orphan. How does it make you feel though, if you are born at such a disadvantage, firstly, and then to top it off, the union that made you is deemed illegal, by the state? Head Wreck
IQ does not make good pearenting laws like this are fucked up, pointless, and bigoted i do agree some people should never be pearents, but inteligence isnt the deciding factor in that theres a single mother in work who tbh is a fantastic pearent, even if she is a little dullwitted at times (wont buy any food that didnt come from asda, (UK walmart subsid) because it had been in the dirt, and no food that was alive, though meat and fish from asda are okay as thier from asda not some yucky birthing process in mud and germs). meanwhile theres me i dont consider myself stupid, nor highly intelligent, but slightly above average. i dont know how to react with kids. i just cant contemplate what it was like being a kid. i was allways treated and spoken to like an adult, and i responded many years more advanbced than i was actually aged. i never was spoken to in toddler talk (aside from monday this week by some woman in the "diversity unit" calling aboput my "condition" dyslexia, never have i been so insulted in my life)

Msterbeau
Here's a very basic principal: Fucking feels good. And another: You won't stop people from fucking. Lastly: People come from fucking. The legislation applies strictly to artificial means of getting pregnant. So forget the sex stuff. It STILL sucks because it's STILL based on the faulty logic that only MARRIED male/female parents can make good parents. That and it is a backdoor way of preventing gay couples from using these methods since, they can't marry in Indiana.
