FarrIL
You know, I've grown up my whole life living under the impression that Detroit was the worst city, crime-wise. Shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Well, I went out for a walk last night, in the chilly air and ended up getting stopped by a neighbor. We struck up conversation and when I brought up the idea of moving downstate, around the Detroit area, I told him that my parents would never be too keen on the idea. Tim, my neighbor, said that Saginaw had been having some serious trouble. Over the past 4 months, there have been several shootings (( the actual number escapes me right now )) throughout the city, drive-bys and such. Now, as I was told and am currently coming to this actual conclusion........ here, in Mid-Michigan, in the middle of nowhere, you're not so safe anymore. Saginaw is all of a 25 minute drive from where I live. Could it be that Saginaw is WORSE than Detroit now? From what I've heard, the answer to that question is "Damn straight!!" Kinda creepy, dont you think?
The_Dark
ACtually... in the 80's Saginaw had a higher crime rate that Detriot. Saginaw also is higher on the number of murders per capita list.. or at least it was. BTW.. where the hell do you live? I spent most of my adult life in the Alma area.. abotu 45min from Saginaw. Fierce Critter
I've lived or spent copious amounts of time in many areas. Suburbs. Mid-City. Cow-country. Woodlands. Bible belt. You name it. Crime of some sort is everywhere. You think that rural America would be the safest - good family values, non-crowding, etc. Bullshit. Drugs & alcoholismare rampant due to boredom. Same with vandalism & gangs (I saw more gang droppings in the rural south than I ever did mid-Detroit). Large distances between homes means a rapist/burglar doesn't have to worry about witnesses or someone hearing a victim's screams. The woodlands, I think, are better. People are too busy working too hard to keep themselves going to have time to commit crime. The city is bad. Every big city. I don't care what anyone says. Everyone I've ever talked to who lived or spent a lot of time in big cities say they all suck. Some suburbs are better, but some are worse. Before we moved to Taylor in the late 70's, Taylor had higher per capita rape statistics than Detroit. But then there are cities like Cary, NC, very near where I lived. Cary was like a cross between Livonia & Grosse Pointe. And it's something like 3rd on the list of "safe" cities to live in in the U.S. And man, what a cold, cold city. I hated it. Dunno. I don't think anywhere is "safe" anymore.
FarrIL
BTW.. where the hell do you live? I spent most of my adult life in the Alma area.. abotu 45min from Saginaw. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I live in Midland, right on the border of Bay County. About 5 minutes drive from Auburn. I asked my Criminal justice teacher about the shootings today after class and she confirmed that there have been several, but they werent random..... they had occurred because "Someone knew someone else and pissed someone off." I realize that no place is truly safe, nothing is truly sacred, blah blah, but I grew up in Lake Orion and never realy gave the thought that there actually were gangs in my hometown. I always figured that things happened closer to Detroit, if not, in it. But when crimes that severe happen this close to home, in the middle of nowhere, I guess it woke me up a bit. Ginevra
It's true that no place is truly safe anymore. But some areas definately have more than its fair share of crime.
FarrIL
Definitely catches your attention, especially when it's so close to home..... e.e Oh well, I figured it was something worth noting. I just find it a bit ironic that here, in the middle of nowhere, we have gang shootings. Sorry, I'm still under the mentality that I live in an area where the worst thing done is incest or indecent exposure....... oo;

Steven
I feel safer in Detroit than I do in LA, Compton, Lynwood, Watts, Hollywood, Azusa, Highland Park (Ca version of Highland Pk) and El Monte.
