I like Rev. Peterson and have looked into Bond before. If I were a Black Male I would have joined the group... He teachs Men to be Men... stop blaming other people for your mistakes and to take responsibility for your own actions.

It helps that he sees things pretty close to how I do as to Nola and the storm.

Never heard of him - but he sounds great.

I am a BIG beleiver that men in general in this present age have lost their edge - and have lost touch with what true manhood really is.

it comes down to personal responsibility, regardless of color/race/etc...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

But this is not taught in society anymore.

Instead what were taught is that its not our fault - its always somone elses fault. Or our DNA's fault. Or the city we live in's fault. or....or......

I agree with you about personal responsibility.

I just think its also a (and sadly so) product of a by-gone generation.

we have happy pills now.

There are some very good points in that article, however I am still horrified at the way the whole thing was handled and the time that it took to get help to those stranded, all the while politicians contratulating each other while people died of dehydration.

Everything failed in the end.

- The levees should have been reinforced years ago.

- The local government should have gotten people OUT.

- Those who could get to safety should have done so.

- Neighbors should have helped each other instead of allowing criminals to prey on the weak. They should have gathered together and beat the shit out of those assholes.

- Reporters should have found ways to at least get some help to some of them. Put the damn microphone down and start handing out water. They got into the town somehow - load those news helicopters with cases of water.

It's easy to say all these things I know since I wasn't there, but I was and am still horrified by the whole mess. I won't trust my or my children's safety to anyone but myself anymore, not the police, not my neighbors and certainly not my government.

It's pretty much a founding beleif of the Democratic party.. Got a problem? Government can fix it.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Actually, the Democratic party was originally set up in opposition to the Federalists, and opposed even the National Bank (Bank of the United States). So, one could make a strong argument that they started out opposed to big government. Of course, that changed in the 1850s when the party split along northern and southern lines, due to northern opposition to expanding slavery laws.

All Americans must tell blacks this truth. It was blacks' moral

> poverty not their material poverty that cost them dearly in New

While I agree that the black community has an obligation to stand up and take responsibility for themselves (this extends well beyond the black community, for what it's worth), anyone BUT blacks telling them this would, in our current cultural/political climate, be ultimately counterproductive. There is still too much mistrust of whites, and even other minorities; one need look no further than Detroit to see that.

I shouldn't have used the word founding.. I should have used core. My mistake. Both Repubilcans and Democrats are polar oppisistes as to what they were founded as. Hell, they are completly different than they were 20 years ago. They also both have big differences in what the leaders do and what the memebers beleive...

Take democrats... you talk to any individual on the street.. ask them which party was for freeing the slaves, which party was for desegragation, which party was for women's liberation and half a dozen other social issues.... most are going to say Democrats... they will be wrong.

Which just goes to show how useless labels can be...

I completely agree with the idea of personal responsibility. The one problem I have with some "liberal" ideas is that they don't always foster it. (Although this is probably as much due to poor implementation as anything) Take a look at the Unions, the lawsuit climate , The way people drive, etc to see how messed up things are in this regard. That said, Without government, many people who couldn't afford the services government can provide would suffer needlessly. There needs to be a balance of empathy for our fellow man and personal responsibility. Right now the conservatives reward the rich and privliged while forcing dogmatic views on those who don't want them. The liberals seek to regulate and excuse to the point of silliness. Generalizations? yeah... but you get the idea.

So... On to the matter at hand. Have you (DGN collectively) ever lived an complete poverty... for many generations? Do any of us truly understand what it means to be poor? Destitute? I doubt it. Do you think some of the people refered to as being morally bankrupt have any idea what morals are anymore? The problem is huge... it is above issues of race or economics or mental health or any single issue that you can name.... and I doubt it will go away in our lifetime. Maybe down the road... we can only hope. There are way too many factors involved for any one solution.... For Rev Paterson to place blame at the black communities immorailty without acknowledging the reasons, seems arrogant, judgemental and counterproductive.
