Hair Colour Product Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Saechalyn's post got me looking up older posts for answers to my own hair dye questions. I think I just ended up with more questions than answers.

I got a bunch of hair dyes off Freecycle, and decided they're all crap and I have to buy what I need.

For permanent colors, Clairol Color Max came highly recommended. But I did some looking at Clairol's website, including their professional site, and they don't list it at all. I'm wondering if it's been discontinued.

I'm going to do a variation on something I've done before. Usually, I dye a layer of hair on the very bottom/underneath part of my hair a nice, deep red, using Jerome Robbins Punky Colour Vermilion. Their website swatches don't even come close to the correct color, but if you want to check out the product, the website is Punky.com. I use the professional stuff, (ALL of their products are semi-permanent), process it under a heat cap for an hour, and it lasts a pretty decent amount of time with more rinsings than washes.

This is what it looked like last time I did it (my hair is longer and one length now):

The picture is decently representative of the shade. I can't deal with a red with orange overtones - the vermillion has more violet to it, a blood-red without being brick red, know what I mean?

This time, I want to add a black layer on the undermost, then the red on the layer above it, with my blonde still on top. NO bleaching ahead of time. And I do want to go permanent.

So I'm looking for dye suggestions. I have level 30 developer on hand to use with the red. From Saechalyn's thread, I understand I want a 20 for black.

I need suggestions on reds & blacks to pick up at Sally's. Holliwood suggested Wella black in another thread (any particular Wella? How long does it last? Is it available at Sally's?) Others swear by Feria Starry Night.

How about reds?

I don't want to just use the Punky Colour vermillion, though the color is spot-on. I'd like to go more permanent.

I'd like to do this before next weekend. Thanks for your experienced advice!

For black, I've used Miss Clairol Black Velvet..it was a nice color....as far as reds go, I was kinda dissappointed at the selection at Sally, its mostly burgundy or auburn reds there. I always used this stuff made specifically for people with dark hair (my hair is naturally dark brown), and they had some nice vibrant reds, but I would be afraid that it would toast your hair because it is "high lift" color. Hmm, good luck! :)

For Blacks I always preferred to buy Garnier, because you can always dye over it easier. I found that out from a friend who was dying her hair. I once dyed my hair red on top, and black on the bottom. It didnt look right on me. I dont know if you shop at Sally's but I can get hair dye for $2.59 for a tube of permanent, and it has 4 applications in it so it lasts a long time. I already have the stuff to mix it and the bottles and gloves, so if you want we can go togther or meat each other up at a Sally's or whatnot. Call me at 248-521-2251. Best time to call me is Sunday after 11am.

Hey Critter,

I have a few bottles of MC MAX Drop-Dead Red and Sinful Ruby...you are welcome to them  =)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Holliwood, you're an absolute peach.

From your previous description of the blending of those colors, sounds like it'd be a good, comparable shade to the Punky Vermillion, eh?

Will you be at HeadlessGoth's party this Saturday? I can get them from you there... I owe you... =)

I want to do my hair before this Saturday, so I'm going to go ahead with the Punky Colour for now - I have some left. When that's good and gone, I'll do the permanent.

Hey - what's the consensus on the black product I should pick up? I read the recommendations here, but Feria's Starry Night seems the most recommended in other threads... Hm??

Moonlight Phantasy - thanks for the great offer. =) I have a Sally's card, too. I love that place. I think I'm all set for now, though.
