I once asked someone if they ever checked the credentials of their financial advisor as to what made them qualified to be their financial advisor.

They said "no", they never asked or checked.

That was scary to me.

But, let's see what the rest of you do with your money, or would do.

I really don't like the idea of even having a financial advisor. I'd much rather educate myself and make my own decisions. I hear too many stories about disastrous results from using financial advisors. :/

I don't really have that much to invest, but what I do have I want control over myself.

I really have to agree with you. The reason I posted this is due to how that person answered my question so I figured I'd pose it to others to see what they do.

I would certainly never recommend leaving your money in others hands, but many people do it and then wonder why their serrogate 'parent' fucked them over and ran away with the spoon. I see it happen all the time.

I also warned this person not to stay with this advisor when they go independent, since then they have no protection from a fly-by-night scenario, which I have seen time and time again.

I think a good balance of your own common sense, education and a professional opinion can make good investing.

I would love to hear from anyone who does this as a living though. Would be interesting to see what they have to say about this.

Go to the NASD (National Association of Securities Dealers) and check out your broker for any disclosure events. These events would be any "black marks" on their record. It will also show their resume. Here is the link for the NASD Broker Check website.

by the way, I chose referral. You're more likely to get better service if you come from a "nest" of referrals. The broker/advisor wants more referrals.

Also, I'm a broker...but I only do institutional...

no dealings with the public makes Game of Chance a happy boy

Seems like you get what you pay for, size, longevity and reputation go a long way with me.

To some degree...thats true...but the reality is...most of the retail firms on the

street suck...IMO...

Keep in mind the highest paid broker/advisor is not necessarily always making the best decisions for their customers.

Merril's good, but expensive

Morgan Stanley is good

A.G. Edwards is allegedly a great firm, although I have no dealings with them

Raymond James is also a great equities firm.

Good luck.

Either my stockbroker or my Mail delivery person has made recent attempts to have unwanted anal sex with me. What do I do?

I sold $4k worth of stocks and that would help end alot of my problems, however my name was not on my mailbox and my $4k never came. I was receiving some of my mail so I didn't think not having my name on the mailbox mattered - until the mail carrier told me that the mail was returned because of that. Well my stockbroker issued a new check, so hopefully it will come soon.

So this is off topic to the subject, but Game of Chance can I sue the post office for losing my check (if my other check never arrives) ???

If not, can I sue you?
