:devil This is just really getting old, they started to play Christmas music right before Holloween. It is still over a month away, but what do you expect its all about commercialism. How about those people that keep their Christmas lights and decorations up well after the holiday is over, explain this one.

Actually.... if one were to say.. watch the news once in a while, one would find things out. An example of what the news might teach you is that Walmart didn't meet it's sales goals last Christmas season. On top of that, it's not looking so good for this year either. You will also learn that 60% of Walmart's incoming revenue is generated during the Christmas season. To combat low seasonal sales numbers.. they started early.

in stores i can deal with.

when your employer bans all music save for the local radio station just for this time of year so we "can all get into the christmas spirit" and be happier at work, even though i have worked my ass of this year, achieved a pass grade on last assesment, only one not getting a bonus this year (least the payrise goes up by £1166) and be forced to listen to narcasistic tossers on the radio broken up BY THE SAME SEVEN FRIGGIN SONGS

oh yes,

wizard: i wish it could be christmas every day

cliff richard: misseltoe and wine (FUCKING DIE YOU MONKEY GLAND ABUSING GERIATRIC, STOP TRYING TO BE 30 AGAIN)

slade - merry christmas everybody (i like this song, but only played once a week, not 132 times a shift (okay it was a 16 hour shift with someone with a cd on repeat)

band aid: do they know its christmas (yes, the 6 songs before you and after your last airing told me so)

the list will be topped up i'm sure as this season of hell starts now halloween and guy fawkes is over

Years ago I used to work at the florist in Oakland mall and they would start with the fucking Christmas music the day after Halloween.  I often worked 8 hours shifts.  8 fucking hours of the shit over and over again.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

My wife works with these freaks who listen to Christmas music 8 hours a day in her office. There's no escaping it and her boss doesn't let her wear earphones. Absolutely ridiculous. When the Christmas music starts in my office, I love throwing in some KMFDM to kick Silent Night's ass out of my head.

what a buncha sad sacks you people are, wasting your time and energy fuming over the great christmas conspiracy, bah humbugging yourselves.

life is hard enough allready People.

I dont care whos making money off of Christmas. I'm spending mine - chuckling under my breath for who gets a fart machine, laughing as the kids get excited, letting the Xmas music lift my spirit, and wondering how many people I can get togethor with at my home for good eats, warm spirits, and the chance to bless each other and remind each other that we count - that were important in each others lives, that the grind is not who we are - and that our struggels do not define us but ratehr the people who are willing to surround us define us.

Its an opportunity people.

To connect.

To make somebody smile who's life just fucking sucks.

To forget for a minute what you dont have - just for a minute so that somebody else can be more important that we are - just for a little while.

I dont care who makes money while I do that. Of course theres corporate greed all over it.

SO what? All I care about is that a kid who's single mom is struggling can have something cool that he or she normally would never have. I care about THAT shit - because I can. And I'll give my money GLADLY to the corporate empire to watch that kid smile.

And I dont care if Christmas is a CHRISTIAN (the horror, the horror, the horror) holiday - I'm a fucking sinner too, man - what I care about is that I can call somebody up who is lonely and has had a hard time and go "Dude (or Babe) - I want you to come over to my house - I'll even pick you up, but I want you to hang with me and eat my shitty cooking and drink some brandy with me and you can crash here tonight and then in the morning we'll go get some greasy ham and eggs at the diner". Thats what I care about. Because I have the power to do that.

I love the Christmas season simply because it reminds me, that I should not matter all that much, that my personal agendas should not matter much, because at least for a little while - at least - somebody else should matter more.

Personally I think it is a christian born paranoia about Halloween that is making mangagers.......corp execs and owners start with the xmas stuff early on purpose trying to overrun and eliminate the 'pagan' holiday.

I like you HH, I do.

But this is just stupid.

<sappy voice> And that's the meaning of Christmas </sappy voice> Just kidding. I agree that that part of it's cool, but do I really have to like the music?

The fact that we have had a shitty year. full of hurricanes, tornado's, 2000 deaths in Iraq, and a collapsing economy. you could say that the early christmas activities is an attempt to lift everybodies spirits and give them something to look forward to, and cause a distraction away from it all.

Dark - your explanation for Wal-Mart's early start this year is probably correct. But it hardly explains the rest of the early starts this year.

I never heard Christmas music on the radio before Thanksgiving - before this year. I can't, in all my years, ever recall hearing it the day after Halloween. Wal-Mart doesn't own the radio station.

Steven - I like your post.

I don't have a problem with Christmas. I don't let retail or anyone else ruin stuff like that "for" me. I like exchanging gifts with my family, I like Christmas Carols, I like shopping at the mall the last week before Christmas with all the hustle & bustle, decorations & all that goes with it.

I'm walking a heathen line, but I appreciate the season, and all the different religions' (and non-religious) takes on the time. From the birth of Christ, to the Yule Log to Channukah, to Santa Claus, etc.

I like seeing decorations outside, and will probably do it myself for the first time in years (lights without snow just didn't work for me in NC).

I like the season. I intend to enjoy it.

But I will say this - I do feel bad for anyone working where they play constantly looped music over and over and over and over, especially Christmas music. That is enough to drive anyone insane, and I think the people who manage these places really need to look at what it does to their employees.

Loops do exist that have precious few repeats. I worked for AAA's legal department downtown for a year and a half. I was so traumatized by the job (long story) that I started doing weird things to keep myself sane. They played piped-in music loops, and I started keeping track of what they played, trying to recognize the instrumental versions of popular songs. Not once in the year and a half I was there did I hear any repeats. That's pretty damned good.
